The Pitcairn Islands are a group of five islands, of which only Pitcairn Island - the largest - is inhabited, in the southern Pacific Ocean , the only remaining British colony in the Pacific. The islands are best known for being the home of the descendants of the Bounty mutineers and the Tahitians who accompanied them, an event retold in numerous books and films. This history is still apparent in the surnames of many of the islanders. With only about 50 inhabitants (from 9 families), Pitcairn is also famed for being the least populated country in the world (although it is not a sovereign nation ). The United Nations Committee on Decolonization includes the Pitcairn Islands on the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories

An island territory of Australia in the southern Pacific Ocean northeast of Sydney. Discovered by Capt. James Cook in 1774, it was formerly a British penal colony. var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia Norfolk Island n´r fək ) , island (1993 est. pop. 2,600), 13 sq mi (34 sq km), South Pacific, a territory of Australia, c.1,035 mi (1,670 km) NE of Sydney. Now a resort, Norfolk has luxuriant vegetation and is known for its “pine” trees, which are not true pines but evergreens of the araucaria family. Explored in 1774 by Capt. James Cook , the island was claimed by Great Britain in the hope that the trees would provide masts for the navy. When the wood proved unsatisfactory, Norfolk was made into a prison island (1788–1855). In 1856 the prisoners were removed and some of the descendants of the Bounty mutineers were moved to Norfolk from Pitcairn Island. Norfolk Island was annexed to Tasmania in 1844, became a dependency of New South Wales in 1896, and was transferred to the Commonwealth of Australia in 1913. Many of the old prison colony buildings have been restored and contribute to the island's main industry, tourism. Limited self-rule was granted to Norfolk Island in 1979. There are natural gas deposits south of the island.
