The State of Narrative Nonfiction Writing
On May 6, 2000, the Nieman Foundation and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism convened a panel of journalists to discuss narrative journalism. This event occurred during a two-day conference focused on nonfiction writing that was part of the 2000 Lukas Prize Project Conference. This project honors the work and life of J. Anthony Lukas, who won two Pulitzers, the second for his narrative book "Common Ground," in which he explored the personal and political dynamics of Boston's school desegregation crisis through the lens of three families' experiences. Robert Vare, senior editor at The Atlantic Monthly who teaches a seminar on narrative nonfiction writing at the Nieman Foundation, moderated a panel discussion about narrative writing in books, magazines and newspapers. Participants on the panel included Walter Kirn, contributor to Time and literary editor of GQ, Alma Guillermoprieto, author and staff writer for The New Yorker, Michael Kelly, editor in chief of The Atlantic Monthly, and Jack Hart, writing coach for The Oregonian. Edited excerpts from their remarks follow. Robert Vare : Welcome to the third and final panel of the J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Nonfiction Writers Conference. Our panel will attempt to assess the health and well-being of long-form narrative writing in the worlds of books, magazines and newspapers.

INTRODUCTION TO writing A NONFICTION BOOK – Have you always wanted to write writing a nonfiction book is a good way to break into the publishing world.

THE WRITER'S WORKSHOP CAN WRITING BE TAUGHT? Many renowned authors have criticized writing courses. Ernest Hemingway, the most influential American author of the last generation, often disparaged such instruction. But it should be pointed out that he had the benefit of one-on-one tutorials with such luminaries as Gertrude Stein and Ford Maddox Ford. He learned his craft through daily journalism and writing short stories, but also called upon knowledgeable, experienced instructors to correct his mistakes and set him on the right path. Hemingway, like most writers, benefited greatly by writing instruction. Even the most promising writers need sound advice from someone who practices the craft. Without this they can flounder for years, continually repeating mistakes, turning what should be a rewarding and enlightening activity into an exercise in frustration. A good writing class, whether online or in a Seattle-based class, can provide direction for writers' work and models of the kind of writing they should emulate. In the long run such advice is very inexpensive. Writing is a very solitary occupation, and the structure, guidance and deadlines provided by a writing class can serve as a powerful agent for a writer’s growth and development. But no matter how helpful the instruction, you must provide the motivation. It's your desire, discipline and commitment that will make the ultimate difference. I provide the context in which to progress, but you must provide the impetus to make that happen. You'll get a lot of helpspecific assignments, pertinent outside reading and individual critiquesbut your drive is key. This is especially true in writing. Writers must be self-starters, even if they need a lot of encouragement in the early stages of their career.

I was trying to write then and I found the greatest difficulty was to put down what really happened in action; what the actual things were which produced the emotion that you experienced…the real thing, the sequence of motion and fact which made the emotion and which would be as valid in a year or ten years or, with luck and if you stated it purely enough, always.

Our Philosophy
Writing well about what really happened and how it happened does not come easily, especially early on. Writers need encouragement, skillful guidance and sound, practical advice to master their craft. Otherwise, they can flounder for years, repeating mistakes over and over again, turning what should be a rewarding and enlightening activity into an exercise in frustration. Experienced authors can benefit from the structure a class provides to perfect and extend their technique. The Writer's Workshop offers a variety of courses and tutorials to meet the needs of a wide range of writers. After founding the Narrative Nonfiction program at the University of Washington in 1993, one of the first such programs in the country, I developed an online and campus-based writing program that combines the best of fiction and nonfiction writing. The Writer's Workshop is the result.

Note: After reading this article, please visit the transcript of the discussion forum to view readers' comments. This article draws upon research work sponsored by the Nuffield Foundation. It is adapted from an article in the May 1997 issue of The Australian Journal of Language and Literacy, Vol. 20, No. 2, published by the Australian Literacy Educators' Association.
Introduction Our literate society demands that we read and write a wide range of texts. It is an observable fact that many of the texts we, as adult members of society, encounter everyday and need to deal with are nonfiction texts. Much of the research of the last few decades into the development of children's writing has tended to concentrate on personal and fictional texts; nonfiction writing often has been neglected. The increasing demand that children read and respond to all kinds of writing ( Department of Education and Science, 1990 ) means that we need to look closely at how we can help students become aware, and develop into competent writers, of differing nonfiction text. Our work with teachers as part of the Exeter Extending Literacy (EXEL) Project (see, for example

If you are interested in incorporating more nonfiction into your curriculum, there is probably no better book available for primary teachers than this one. As I read through the book, nearly every page sparked an idea, thought, or ah-ha moment. Here you will find lists, frameworks, suggestions. You will also find real teachers and real students engaged in meaningful learning. The book is divided into two parts. Part One, "Teaching Nonfiction Writing" contains five chapters. In Chapter 1, "Opening the Doors to the World of Possibilities," Stead makes a convincing argument for the need to incorporate more nonfiction into the curricula. He tells about an experiment in which he recorded for an entire day all the types of reading, writing, listening, and speaking he engaged in. Not surprisingly, over 80 percent "fell outside narrative." When he recorded the type of interactions his son engaged in, the number rose to almost 90 percent. Included in this chapter is a handy chart which lists the purposes and types of nonfiction. (I copied this page and placed it in front of my planning book. I refer to it before I plan any activity or lesson.) In Chapter 2, "An Approach to Teaching Nonfiction Writing," Stead describes in detail a 7-step nonfiction framework he created to do just that. The framework is described in the context of a real classroom unit of study. Thus the reader is able to see the framework in action.

Dead or Alive: How Will Your Students' Nonfiction Arrive?
By Nancy Lilly Summary : Why is it that the same kids who write wonderful stories in class often write deadly dull research reports? Using “focus lessons” from Nonfiction Matters by Stephanie Harvey, and “brushstrokes” from Image Grammar by Harry Noden, Nancy Lilly describes how she helps her students recognize that the skills that elevate fiction are the very skills needed to write strong nonfiction, including science writing. The pelican has many survival behaviors, also. One of the fishing behaviors is to flap its wings to attract fish into shallow water. Then it catches and eats the fish. The pelican also has the survival behavior of diving to catch fish. It can sight fish from up to sixty feet above the water. Like most of the other writers, his piece was correct, informative, and dull. This had to change. I decided to make nonfiction writing the focus of my research over the summer as I participated in the advanced institute of my writing project. I needed to find a way to help students so their writing sounded more like National Geographic and less like World Book Encyclopedia.

These and other disparaging statements, uttered with frustration and resignation, greet me at the beginning of every workshop I offer in the teaching of creative nonfiction. We, as teachers, are being trained to instruct our students how to communicate effectively in a detached, cryptic manner that has little (if anything at all) to do with the writer. And, with the addition of the writing segment of the SAT, even greater pressure is being placed on teachers and students alike to look at writing as a means of pleasing hoop-holders instead of making even a subtle difference to an audience that extends beyond test readers and college admissions boards. Set. Bump. Slam. Congratulations. You are a Writer. Laura Robb not only knows this firsthand, she has identified this urgency to re-energize our young writers in her new book Nonfiction Writing: From the Inside Out Simply put, Robb believes firmly that if we abandon our passion for reading and writing nonfiction to focus on getting near-perfect scores on standardized tests, we are contributing to the increasing indifference of a generation of writers who have been trained to believe that what they really think or believe, see, or feel is secondary to how well they can please a single reader who will slap a one-time high score for a job well done.

WHAT IS CREATIVE NONFICTION?
Dramatic, true stories using scenes, dialogue, close, detailed descriptions and other techniques usually employed by poets and fiction writers about important subjects - from politics, to economics, to sports, to the arts and sciences, to racial relations, and family relations.
Creative Nonfiction heightens the whole concept and idea of essay writing. It allows a writer to employ the diligence of a reporter, the shifting voices and viewpoints of a novelist, the refined wordplay of a poet and the analytical modes of the essayist.
We want the essays we publish in Creative Nonfiction to have purpose and meaning beyond the experiences related by the writers. Good essays embrace a larger audience. They strike a universal chord.
