The Writing
The writing demonstrates an ability to interpret ideas meaningfully in
context. The "big idea" of the paper is interesting and clear. All the main ideas are clearly related to the "big idea." The main ideas are organized into a logical sequence. The transitions from one main idea to the next are smooth. There are enough appropriate and accurate details to support each
main idea. The choice of words is appropriate, varied, and creates a natural
voice. The mechanics and grammar are integral to the meaning and effect
of the writing. Stylistic variety and choice are evident in elements of rhetoric such
as diction, syntax, structure, and figurative language. The paper is neat and presentable.

Interpreting Identities: Advancing Literary Anthropology as a Research Method Dennis J. Sumara, Ph.D. University of Alberta Contact information: 6507 - 126th Street Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Phone: (780) 434-8593 E-mail: dennis.sumara@ualberta.ca RUNNING HEAD: Interpreting identities Abstract This article advances “literary anthropology” as a research method. In addition to presenting an interpretive text which functions as the report of the author’s engagements with literary fiction, and with philosophical, theoretical, and historical writings, the article provides a theoretical and historical overview of literary anthropology as a research method, with particular attention to how this method is influenced by the hermeneutic philosophic traditions. The article concludes with a discussion of what literary anthropological methods might contribute to literacy education and literacy education research. Interpreting Identities: Advancing Literary Anthropology as a Research Method In this article, I specifically focus on how I used literary anthropological research methods developed from my engagements with Anne Michaels’ (1996) novel Fugitive Pieces to interpret a relationship to my ancestors, with particular attention to my parents’ emergence from events of World War II. These literary engagements were juxtaposed with historical, philosophical, and theoretical literatures concerned with interpreting relationships among history, memory, culture, geography, language, and identity. In addition to these textual artifacts, I examined personal objects of my own and of my mother’s to analyze how human identity is organized by cultural objects and, as well, how these develop new significance when understood in relation to emergent cultural knowledge.

SEARCH: Perspectives Choosing Award-winning Nonfiction Writing for Children: Three Perspectives "Imagination, invention, selection, language, form—these are just as important to the making of a good book of biography, history, or science as to the making of a piece of fiction," wrote Milton Meltzer in 1976. At the time that Meltzer's article, "Where Do All the Prizes Go? The Case for Nonfiction," appeared in the February 1976 issue of The Horn Book Magazine From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books (HarperCollins), author Kathleen T. Horning states: "Whatever their motivation for reading nonfiction, children deserve to have books of information that are accurate, engaging, and well written." Nonfiction awards help to identify the best of those "accurate, engaging, and well written" works of nonfiction for children. Here is a glimpse at how those award winners are chosen. * There are several awards now given for nonfiction writing for children. For further information about these and other nonfiction awards, the Council suggested asking your school or local children's librarian. Additional information can also be found on the Internet. The Washington Post -Children's Book Guild Award for Nonfiction
Jewell Stoddard Chair , 2002 Award Committee TheWashington Post -Children's Book Guild Award for Nonfiction is granted each year to an "author or author/illustrator whose total body of work has contributed significantly to the quality of nonfiction for children." The Children's Book Guild is a sixty-five-year-old organization of authors and illustrators of at least two published works and a selection of members from the community of librarians and children's literature specialists of Washington, D. C. The Guild presented its first award to David Macaulay in 1977. In 1982
