Report from the Editor:
As our president indicated in her message, the upcoming year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of OCWW. Her comment prompted me to look at back issues of the newsletter to read about events in the last ten years. What I noticed immediately were the names of many of you who are active in the organization. Serving in various volunteer positions, members like Marjorie Franco and Marge Herguth have contributed much to the success of the group. In preparation for our important milestone year, it would be interesting to hear from you about ways OCWW has influenced your writing. Whether you are a recent member or one who has been with the group over many years, please share your thoughts with us.

The CWA Dagger Awards
Readers and authors alike often wonder how the CWA Dagger nominees and winners are selected. The following should answer some of those questions, as well as giving a comprehensive list of all the winners since they were instituted. Only British publishers can submit entries for the awards, and the submissions must have been published in the English language in the United Kingdom within a limited period of time. The number of awards, as well as their names, have varied over the years. In part this was due to sponsorship: in the mid 1990s the names of four of the Daggers (Gold, Silver, Non Fiction, and Short Story) were expanded to include that of its sponsor, The Macallan, distillers of one of Britain's top whiskies. Since publishers can submit the same book for all relevant awards, it is theoretically possible for a historical crime thriller by a debuting author to win the Gold, Creasey, Historical and Steel Daggers. This summary was compiled by Adrian Muller , a UK based freelance journalist and events organiser specialising in crime fiction. The Cartier Diamond Dagger

ADMISSIONS ARE CLOSED FOR 2005. For information on Squaw Valley Literary Events which are open to the public, click on the Reading and Public Events links above, and download a schedule of events. Every summer for 36 years, the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley has brought together poets and prose writers for separate weeks of workshops, individual conferences, lectures, panels, readings and discussions of the craft and the business of writing. Our goal is to assist writers to improve their craft and thus move them closer to publication. The Community has a competitive admissions procedure and the level of writing is high, but interested writers and poets should not hesitate to apply. More information on each program is available by following the links above. Complete information on how to apply to each program can be found by following the program links above and then following the "How to Apply" links. The Community of Writers was established in 1969 by novelists Blair Fuller and Oakley Hall, who were both residents of the valley. It was originally staffed by a band of San Francisco writers including David Perlman, Barnaby Conrad and John Leggett, the latter two of whom went on to found, respectively, the Santa Barbara Writers Conference and the Napa Writers Conference. The Community of Writers continues to be directed by Brett Jones. Over the years the community has mounted workshops in Fiction, Nonfiction, Screenwriting, Playwriting, Poetry, and Nature Writing (the Art of the Wild Program, which was co-produced by the University of California at Davis), and Writing the Medical Experience. The Writers Workshop, which was for twenty years directed by Carolyn Doty, is now directed by Lisa Alvarez and Louis B. Jones. The Nonfiction Program is directed by literary agent Michael Carlisle. Galway Kinnell directed the Poetry Workshops for 17 years. Robert Hass has been the new Poetry Director since last year. Diana Fuller directs the Screenwriters Workshop, which was founded by screenwriters Tom Rickman and Gill Dennis.

Once, at an editorial meeting this winter, our staff discovered banana pizza. Little did we imagine that our taste for crazy toppings would resurface months later in our conversation with writer and graphic novelist Neil Gaiman. Apparently, the author of American Gods takes apricot on his pizza. Two-Fisted Tales in a Four-Color City Finally, in an Otium exclusive, staff members Terry Huang and Lee Wang sat with Gaiman to discuss food, fantasy, fiction, and the quotidian nature of being a god. Novelist, graphic writer, and filmmaker, Gaiman prefers to call himself a storyteller . "The universe likes writers. It hands you evidence that almost anything is true," he said during an interview with lecturers Achy Obejas and Ron Gregg. "Then, writers go mad," Gaiman added. And they opt for lunatic pizza. Non fiction writing
These writing tips and tricks for writing non fiction will reach out and touch your audience!
1. How can I add angle to a Non-fiction Article? Before sitting down to write any piece of fiction, you should be sure that you have an angle. Whether it is a news story for a local paper, an article to be sold online, or any non-fiction piece that you will be selling to a publisher, your article should represent a strong voice. Now this doesn't have to read like a testimonial. There are ways to make your article appeal to the reader without using first person. 2. How can I add an angle to my article without using first person? · A good way to do this is to think in the third person frame of mind. First of all, refer to yourself in the article as "we" helps. Just replace I with we. It is amazing how a simple switch of pronouns comes off so clean and professional. Observe this comparison: a. I always am looking for new ways to incorporate an angle into my articles. b. We writers are always looking for new ways to incorporate an angle into our articles. · Notice that the latter sentence just sounds cleaner and crisper- much more professional!

Welcome The NWP is home to Iowa's MFA Program in Nonfiction, which allows accomplished students to concentrate for at least two and more often three years on literary nonfiction, both its study and practice. The 48 semester-hour program culminates in a thesis that may be a sustained essay or a collection of shorter pieces. Our program is a cooperative venture of the core faculty noted on this site, with guest writers joining us regularly for intensive workshops. From time to time, other members of the Department of English also teach in the program so that shifts occur gradually in the composition of our faculty. Several persons have taken a turn as director, a position held currently by Robin Hemley. For additional information, please explore the rest of our site. University of Iowa News Release May 2, 2005 UI Nonfiction Writing Students To Travel To Philippines For Workshop The University of Iowa's worldwide reputation for writing has opened a door for a group of 10 nonfiction writing students who will travel to the Philippines this month for a workshop founded by two 1962 graduates of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Plans for the trip grew out of a luncheon gathering of writers with Iowa connections in the Philippines last year. Robin Hemley, director of the UI's Nonfiction Writing Program, was there following the publication of his book, "Invented Eden, The Elusive, Disputed History of the Tasaday," which details a lost tribe of the Philippines. He met two writers who spent most of their lunch "waxing nostalgic about Iowa," recalling their days in the International Writing Program more than 20 years ago. Hemley began thinking about the Iowa-Philippines writing connection in light of his goal, upon assuming the leadership of the Nonfiction Writing Program in Fall 2004, to internationalize the program. He learned of an annual workshop at CAP College in Dumaguete on the island of Negros and soon a plan was in motion to bring Iowa students to the workshop as the first Americans and the first nonfiction writing students to attend. The workshop, now in its 44th year, was founded at Silliman University by Edilberto and Edith Tiempo who studied with Paul Engle in the Iowa Writers' Workshop and saw a need for a similar program to nurture writers in their home country. The Tiempos are the parents of Rowena Torrevillas, who was a longtime staff member in the International Writing Program and now teaches in the English department.
