a guide to her non-fiction writing
The Essays
are a wonderful introduction to the world of belles lettres .Virginia Woolf's literary career began in her father's library. She read the classics whilst young, then began to write about her literary experiences, producing reviews for the Manchester Guardian and the Times Literary Supplement - whose contributions were anonymous in those days. Her tastes are humane and well informed. Read her articles on Shakespeare, Charlotte Bronte, and Katherine Mansfield - and you will feel like reading the texts again immediately. She is astonishingly wide-ranging - from the Greek classics via Renaissance drama and Enlightenment journalism, to contemporary fiction. The approach is rather biographical and author-centred, but these are intelligent and gracefully composed essays which speak eloquently on literary and cultural life.
The Letters are for specialists and the ultimate gossip trivia for Woolf fans. There really is everything from laundry bills, to dinner party recipes, and snobbish lists of people who are 'in' or 'out'. Many of them read as if they were written for public consumption, and even in the gossip there is a lot of repetition. It's interesting to note just how much of this listing and gossip-mongering is recycled in one letter after another. No surprises here. The telephone had only just been introduced, and there were two or even three post deliveries a day at that time. However, if they are read in conjunction with her biography, it is possible to trace the ebb and flow of her personal relationships at very close quarters. For a richer insight into the workings of her keen intellect and creative spirit, the diaries offer greater rewards.

I teach in a computer lab. I take information off the Internet on the subject we
are covering. I make a two column document linked with "frame links" to hold
the note taking column open. I've pasted the information in the left-hand
column and cited the source for them. They then take notes, however their
teacher requires, in the right-hand column. No problems with spelling because
they have access to the words on the left side. It's an excellent way to train for a
couple of things: 1. True note taking can be checked directly against the original paragraph. A
great way to check for main idea comprehension versus writing from past knowledge. 2. Practice for saying it in your own words. The teacher has the original to check against. I then teach fourth graders how to do this on their own...a skill that will serve them well. They learn how to format the document themselves, learn how to cite Internet sources, and they can change the font to a more readible size. They can

Here are a couple of random essays, all pretty short. Sometimes I get on a roll and produce something out of fire and passion. Later, it sometimes seems shrill or just plain weird. I try to keep the shrill stuff out. Or I convert it into a naughty stick figure

REMEMBER (Inspired by Alan Jackson)
By Class poem, 14-15, Le Havre, France Where were you when the world stopped turning?
I was at school, I was learning.
Where were you when New York started burning?
I was here in my classroom. I was learning. That day in September We shall all remember. Did you hear the news on the radio? Did you see the pictures that the TV showed? Did you watch the Twin Towers fall? Now we shall never see them at all. What were you doing when the world stopped turning? I was sitting in my classroom, listening and learning. What were you doing when New York started burning? I was living far away while others were dying. I was laughing and singing while others were crying. We shall always remember the ninth of September Remember, Remember, Remember.

The truth of the matter is that many professional writers supplement their income by ghostwriting projects for others. Until now it's been one of the best kept secrets in publishing and finding a reliable and experienced ghostwriter has been a matter of knowing the right person or blind luck. Not anymore. Perhaps you have a true story that needs telling. You may have suffered an injustice and require a ghostwriter to work with you, to walk you through the process of gathering the necessary information. The ghostwriter will then turn your story into a professionally written book. If there is a novel burning within you but you don't have the time or way with words to write it, we have ghostwriters who can. If you've lead, or survived, an extraordinary life, this is your opportunity to document it.
