Foreword
That volume of production, and the great geographical and disciplinary range which it covers, indicate broad faculty and graduate student interest in the continent and its affairs. They also bear testimony to the high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm and commitment of the compiler of this record, Yvette Scheven, our Africana bibliographer, midwife to so many of these entries and a mainstay of the program and the center since its inception. -Donald Crummey

Most of the titles in this bibliography were obtained by consulting files in the University Library, the Center for African Studies, and the Graduate Office and departmental offices. While I did all the work of compilation for the first edition, the checking for this second edition was begun by Rachel Friedlander Tickner, and her painstaking work was later ably updated by Shumet Sishagne and Brian Kenny, all graduate students.

Kwenu! The legacies of a legend: Eze Onyeama n'Eke King Onyeama of Eke M. O. EN egbedaa@aol.com AGBAJA Eke was a town like every other town in Agbaja, present-day Udi, Ezeagu and Igboeze local government areas of western Enugu State of southeastern Nigeria, but it has given Igboland and Nigeria many great names. The first western-trained Igbo medical doctor, Dr. Simon E. Onwu, was from Ebe, as is the first Nigerian judge to the International Court of Justice at The Hague, Mr. Justice Charles Dadi Umeha Onyeama. But the greatest son of Eke in living memory was Eze Onyeama n’Eke, Dadi's dad. The King of Agbaja, Onyeama n’Eke was the greatest king in northern Igboland [areas in Enugu, Nsukka and Abakaliki that form the present-day Enugu and Ebonyi states]. He was probably the greatest Igbo king in living memory. From his palace in Eke, Onyeama reigned over the entire Agbaja, from Oji River though Udi and Ezeagu to the present-day political capital of Igboland, Enugu, and even Nkanu and Ogui communities. With his Gestapo/Tonton Macoutes -like secret police called Ogwummiri (for they would reach their target and accomplish any goal come rain or shine), and backed by the colonial regime, Onyeama set out to establish a huge and dominant Agbaja kingdom. He was judge, jury, and jailer, an absolute king by any definition.

Dedication
This monograph is dedicated to the following individuals and groups. To our ancestors who, through the numerosity of their oral and written words, taught us a lot about life and nature. They called humans mma ndu, beauty of life, and taught us to appreciate the goodness humans embody as well as love of self, family, and community. Numerous other positive legacies they left us, values which reinforce and stabilize our culture, are embodied in principles or sayings of wisdom, including ezi okwu bu ndu, true word is life; ofo na ogu, the emblem of authority for the signification of righteousness; egbe belu ugo belu, live and let live and the norm of equity; and odi bendi, the norm of deference to other peoples’ practices and ways of life. To the memory of the 5 million Igbos of all age and gender, soldiers as well as civilians, who lost their lives defending Igboland against the genocidal war imposed upon us by the government of Nigeria and its foreign allies in evilness.

Peter Ese Oriavwote, a postgraduate Student in Political Marketing at St. Clements University, Turks and Caicos Islands, British West Indies with Matriculation Number 9828, has satisfactorily completed the requirements for course and research work for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Marketing. The work embodied in this Thesis is original and has not been submitted in part or in full for any other diploma or degree of this or any other university. PROF DAVID IORNEM DR. DAVID J. LE CORNU Project Supervisor Administrative Director. DEDICATION To my father - Mr. Johnson O. Oriavwote. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to provide solutions to the problem of managing the marketing communications function with respect to voting behaviour during local council electioneering campaigns in Nigeria. Previous researches have concentrated on examining the impact of marketing communications on voting behaviour in congressional and presidential elections. The study tested the importance attached to campaign media and communications tools by voters through a structured questionnaire administered on 750 registered voters generated through systematic random sampling. The performance of political parties and candidates in the December 5, 1998 local council election in respect of campaign media and communication tools was also tested through structured questionnaire administered on 80 elected Local Government chairmen (candidates) interviewed through random sampling. A scale of 1 to 5 was used for the tests where 1 represented not at all and 5 represented either very important or very often. The mean results obtained were then subjected to two-dimensional and four-quadrant geometrical configuration to yield the four importance/performance segments.

Book Description
"Affinities of Form: Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas" is as much a fascinating study of the art of collecting as it is of the objects themselves. Indiana University of Art Museum houses one of the finest collections of indigenous art in the world- the product of the Wielguses' diligent and painstaking acquisition over a period of just twenty years. The photograhy of these rare and beautiful objects is breathtaking.
From the Publisher
"Affinties of Form: Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas" examines the notives that led Raymond Wielgus to become a collecter that guided him into his chosen field. Wielgus originally made his name as a maker of high-quality prototype models for his potential new products in the manufacturing industry, and the book shows how the very special experience he gained in this profession modeled his view of the art of collecting. It lists the criteria he applied to the objects to be included in... read more

Mbwoolo Sculpture of the Yaka
by Arthur P. Bourgeois
On the southwestern edge of Zaire and stretching along the Kwango River and adjacent river valleys live
more than 220,000 Yaka, who, unlike their neighbors the Suku, Teke, and Nkanu, are conspicuous in their
use of traditional charms. Among these traditional retentions in a typical Yaka village are Mbwoolo-Tchio
shelters, miniature huts that protect the most numerous and diversified type of Yaka sculpture (Fig. I). Yet
Mbwoolo-Tchio sculpture is virtually unknown to the art literature and has scarcely been distinguished in
exhibitions of Central African art. (1)
In Yaka terminology, Mbwoolo-Tchio images aiebiteki, figures used to support or contain special
concoctions. Without these applied preparations, which permeate the surface or, more rarely, are inserted
into a small ventral cavity, they are without meaning to the Yaka and merely await employment by a ritual specialist. But when charged with these ingredients, they become n'kisi,-"medicines-poisons" that "make-ill" (kukwatn) through an invisible influence, or "make-well" (kubuka) by removing this influence.
