Other parts of the world were not neglected. In the strategically vital Middle East, Nixon established links with Egypt while maintaining the U.S. commitment to Israel. After the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the U.S. replaced the Soviet Union as the dominant influence in Egypt. On racial matters, Nixon generally adopted a passive stance toward efforts by American blacks to achieve educational, economic, and social equality. He personally opposed busing but insisted that the law be upheld in cases where the courts required it.

President Nixon Resigns!
By Patrick Mondout On August 9th, 1974, Richard Nixon became the first U.S. President to resign his office rather than become the first to be removed via impeachment. The night before he had made one of the most dramatic appearances in television history by announcing his intention to resign. A White House speechwriter began drafting a resignation speech several days before the event, as the President agonized over his decision to stay or to go. Speaking to the nation on TV for over 15 minutes , Nixon recounted his successes as President, with an emphasis on foreign policy triumphs such as China (despite his campaign promises of 1969, American troops were still in southeast Asia when he spoke these words). He rationalized his departure as simply a matter of practical politics and the result of losing his political base. Not once did he address the issue of abuse of power nor did he use the word "impeachment." On the morning of August 9, the day following President Nixon's televised resignation speech, White House Chief of Staff Alexander "I'm in Charge" Haig presented a resignation letter to Nixon to sign. In keeping with a law passed by Congress in 1792, the President's

CLARE BOOTHE LUCE once remarked that all public figures come to be associated with a single achievement, never mind how complex their career. And, true, we can say about Lincoln that he won the Civil War, about Edison that he harnessed electricity, about FDR that he created the New Deal. But with what achievement will Richard Nixon be associated, a generation from now? A negative achievement: he is the only American President in history to be kicked out of office. Even so, in America and in much of the world, he was the dominant political figure. It can happen only to a man who takes very large strides in history, that he could win re-election with a runaway majority, and in less than two years leave the White House in greater ignominy than was ever before suffered by a departing American President.

Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California, on January 9, 1913. His parents were poor, and his early life was one of hard work and study. He was a gifted student, graduating in 1934 as second in his class at Whittier College in Whittier, California, and third in his class at Duke University Law School in 1937. Unable to find a position with a Wall Street (New York City) law firm after his graduation, Nixon returned to Whittier to practice. There he met Thelma Catherine Ryan, whom he married in 1940. Nixon enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and served as a supply officer in the South Pacific during World War II (1939-1945). He left the service as a lieutenant commander. Back in Whittier in 1946, Nixon was persuaded by a group of southern California Republicans to challenge Democratic congressman Jerry Voorhis. Nixon campaigned vigorously, tabbed the liberal Voorhis as a dangerous left-winger, and won by 16,000 votes. In 1950 Nixon ran for the United States Senate against Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas He won the election, but his campaign tactics were widely criticized. Vice President In 1952 the Republicans nominated Nixon to be the running mate of presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower. As vice president, Nixon emerged as a vigorous Republican spokesman during the Eisenhower years, campaigning in a style that contrasted with Eisenhower's nonpartisan aloofness. In nonelection years, Nixon toured the country trying to bolster Republican party finances and spirit. He also developed foreign affairs credentials by visiting numerous other countries, including the Soviet Union, where an impromptu "kitchen debate" with Nikita S. Khrushchev made worldwide headlines in July 1959. As undisputed party leader at the end of Eisenhower's second term, Nixon easily won the presidential nomination in 1960. Against the articulate, wealthy, and politically well-connected John F. Kennedy, however, the Nixon edge in experience and prominence melted away. Kennedy won with a narrow popular-vote margin of 113,000 votes out of 68.8 million cast.

Nixon and Terror
Decades before hijackers plunged jetliners into buildings in the worst act of terrorism on American soil in history, President Richard Nixon created a high-level government panel to protect the nation against terrorist attacks, declassified documents show. The panel only met once, though individual members met frequently. The panel was eventually absorbed by the National Security Council. Nixon formed the panel in response to the terrorist attacks at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Below are some key documents outlining the panel's creation and some of what it found, which are chillingly prescient given what the United States learned in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. All documents are in PDF format. - A threat assessment compiled by the panel in 1972, which includes "rumors and unconfirmed reports" of a Palestinian cell in the United States plotting "some spectacular acts against American nationals and/or businesses." These include shooting down an airliner, killing people at an airport or hijacking a flight with the intention of destroying it, the assessment says.

September 8, 1974 Listen to excerpts from the speech as delivered by President Ford in .wav format (file size 2.3 MB) Ladies and gentlemen: I have come to a decision which I felt I should tell you and all of my fellow American citizens, as soon as I was certain in my own mind and in my own conscience that it is the right thing to do. I have learned already in this office that the difficult decisions always come to this desk. I must admit that many of them do not look at all the same as the hypothetical questions that I have answered freely and perhaps too fast on previous occasions. My customary policy is to try and get all the facts and to consider the opinions of my countrymen and to take counsel with my most valued friends. But these seldom agree, and in the end, the decision is mine. To procrastinate, to agonize, and to wait for a more favorable turn of events that may never come or more compelling external pressures that may as well be wrong as right, is itself a decision of sorts and a weak and potentially dangerous course for a President to follow. I have promised to uphold the Constitution, to do what is right as God gives me to see the right, and to do the very best that I can for America.

Richard Nixon's Greatest Cover-Up: His Ties to the Assassination of President Kennedy by Don Fulsom S eared into the memories of all Americans who lived through the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is exactly where they were on November 22, 1963. Yet private citizen Richard Nixon, who — believe it or not — was in Dallas, could not recall this fact in a post-assassination interview with the FBI. The interview dealt with an apparently false claim by Marina Oswald that her husband —alleged Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald — had targeted Nixon for death during an earlier trip to Dallas. A Feb. 28, 1964 FBI report on the interview said Nixon "advised that the only time he was in Dallas, Texas, during 1963 was two days prior to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy." While Nixon eventually came clean regarding his whereabouts on that fateful day, he seemed touchy whenever the matter was raised. For example, in a 1992 interview with CNN's Larry King, Nixon interjected he was in Dallas "In the morning!" when King cited the presumed geographical coincidence. Nixon left Dallas on a flight to New York several hours before Kennedy's noontime arrival at Love Field.
