, thirty-seventh president of the United States . A lifelong Republican, Nixon became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1947, where he gained national attention with his involvement in the Hiss case . He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1951. Still remembered for his emotional "Checkers" speech during the presidential election of 1952 , Nixon served as vice president in the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower. He narrowly lost the presidency to John F. Kennedy in the election of 1960 and was soundly defeated by Pat Brown in his bid for the governorship of California in 1962, resulting in a bitter announcement that he would never again seek public office. After practicing law in New York for several years, however, Nixon actively campaigned for and narrowly won the presidency in the election of 1968 in a race with Hubert H. Humphrey; he won reelection by a landslide over George McGovern in the election of 1972 . As president, Nixon opened relations with the People's Republic of China and ended U.S. involvement in Vietnam. A break-in at the Democratic party headquarters in the

, thirty-seventh president of the United States. Nixon's youth was marked by hard work in a family store and the death of two brothers as well as by academic success. Except for Herbert Hoover, no president elected in this century grew up in more difficult circumstances. Following graduation from Whittier College (1934) and Duke University Law School (1937), he practiced law in California and married Thelma (Pat) Ryan. He served as a navy supply officer during World War II and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946. An ambitious, intelligent, disciplined loner, Nixon cultivated no hobbies and had few close friends. His political shrewdness was often undermined by his vindictiveness and capacity for self-deception. His rise was largely the product of the post-World War II red scare. He convinced the House that Alger Hiss, a second-level New Dealer, had been a Soviet spy and, in 1950, persuaded California voters to send him to the Senate to battle against subversives and "pink" Democrats. Elected vice president in 1952, he served President Dwight D. Eisenhower dutifully for eight years, despite occasional humiliations. He tried to present himself as a statesmanlike "new Nixon," but, partly because memories of the old Nixon lingered, he lost races for president in 1960 and governor of California in 1962. The Watergate scandal was part of a broad campaign to sabotage political opposition. Although Nixon apparently had no advance knowledge of a break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972, he subsequently obstructed an investigation of the crime. After fighting a two-year holding action, he faced impeachment by the House of Representatives and resigned on August 9, 1974. He accepted a pardon from President Gerald Ford and sank briefly into depression.

Richard M. Nixon (January 9, 1913 - April 22, 1994)
On February 17, 1972, a crowd of thousands gathered on the White House lawn for a historic send-off. For Richard Milhous Nixon, the trip to Beijing would be the journey of a lifetime. He would be the first U.S. president to go to China. "He knew that for this flight," wrote Max Frankel in the New York Times , "no matter what else occurred, he would always be remembered."
Born in Yorba Linda, CA in 1913 into a working-class Quaker family, Nixon enjoyed a meteoric early political career. After a stint in the Navy in WWII, he served two consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from California. A member of the House Un-American Activities Committee, he rose to national prominence for his role in the Alger Hiss espionage case, quickly establishing his reputation as a hard-line anti-Communist. It is no small irony that the man who accused the Truman administration of "losing" China to the Communists in 1949 would be responsible for establishing friendly relations with the People's Republic of China some 20 years later.
Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1950, Nixon was chosen by Dwight D. Eisenhower as his vice-presidential running mate. The ticket swept into office in 1952, and was re-elected four years later. As vice-president, Nixon traveled extensively and took an active interest in U.S. foreign affairs.

Richard M. Nixon
US President - 1969-74 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Reconciliation was the first goal set by President Richard M. Nixon. The Nation was painfully divided, with turbulence in the cities and war overseas. During his Presidency, Nixon succeeded in ending American fighting in Viet Nam and improving relations with the U.S.S.R. and China. But the Watergate scandal brought fresh divisions to the country and ultimately led to his resignation. His election in 1968 had climaxed a career unusual on two counts: his early success and his comeback after being defeated for President in 1960 and for Governor of California in 1962. Born in California in 1913, Nixon had a brilliant record at Whittier College and Duke University Law School before beginning the practice of law. In 1940, he married Patricia Ryan; they had two daughters, Patricia (Tricia) and Julie. During World War II, Nixon served as a Navy lieutenant commander in the Pacific.

(Portrait) Richard M. Nixon's forte was foreign policy. When he entered the White House in 1969, he initially distrusted CIA. He soon came to appreciate the Agency's work as he dealt with Vietnam, the thaw in relations with Communist China, and the start of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) in 1970. President Nixon visited CIA's headquarters in March 1969.
". . . GOING BACK DURING THE eight years I was Vice President, I sat on the National Security Council and there I learned to respect the organ-ization, its Director and its reports that were made to the Council, and through the Council to the President of the United States. . . . "And in a sense, then, I look upon this organization as not one that is necessary for the conduct of conflict or war, or call it what you may, but in the final analysis as one of the great instruments of our govern-ment for the preservation of peace, for the avoidance of war, and for the development of a society in which this kind of activity would not be as necessary, if necessary at all. "It is that that I think the American people need to understand, that this is a necessary adjunct to the conduct of the Presidency. And I am keenly aware of that. I am keenly aware of the fact that many of you at times must have had doubts, perhaps you have not, but perhaps there may have been times that you have had doubts about your mission, the popularity of what you do in the country, and I want to reassure you on that score. . . .

Bombing for Peace Nixon ran for office in 1968 promising a quick end to the war in Vietnam. By the spring of 1972, Nixon had brought home a half-million American troops, but he had yet to achieve a peace agreement between North and South Vietnam. After North Vietnam launched a major offensive in March, 1972, Nixon made a decision that most advisors thought would only worsen the situation. 'Naked To His Enemies' Though Richard Nixon won re-election by a landslide in 1972, his second term was quickly consumed by the Watergate scandal. Evidence of political wrong-doing led closer and closer to Nixon and his two top aides. In April, 1973, Nixon decided to fire them. His calls from that time show a man determined to win, but destined to lose.

Richard M. Nixon, 36th Vice President (1953-1961) [I]t just is not possible in politics for a Vice President to "chart out his own course." On the morning of April 16, 1956, Vice President Richard Nixon From Whittier to Congress That first campaign in 1946 gave Richard Nixon the issue that would catapult him to prominence. He vigorously attacked Representative Voorhis for being dominated by Communist-controlled labor unions. Like many Republican candidates across the country, Nixon accused the Democrats of allowing Communists to enter important positions in the federal government, thus undermining American security and threatening to "socialize" the United States. As the cold war began to heat up in Europe and Asia, the American public reacted positively to Republican appeals to throw the Communists out of government, as well as to calls for cutting back on the New and Fair Deals. Republicans swept to victory in congressional elections across the country, winning majorities in the House and Senate for the first time since 1928. Nixon rode this wave of protest, receiving a whopping 57 percent of the vote in his district. The anticommunism that won him a seat in Congress became his trademark issue on Capitol Hill when he gained appointment to the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). Formed in the 1930s to investigate the activities of Nazi and Communist organizations in the United States, HUAC had also served as a forum for attacks on Jews, civil libertarians, and labor union activists. By the late 1940s, the committee had a tarnished reputation as an ineffective and irresponsible group that was more dedicated to attracting publicity than to preserving American security. But, with public anxiety on the rise, HUAC members had the opportunity to lead the fight against domestic communism. Nixon took little part in the committee's investigations of Hollywood during 1947, but he became the leading figure in its highly publicized investigation of Alger Hiss.
