Important - Please Read!
The information you will read here is meant as a general outline of the conditions as they are in Niue at the moment [late 1997]. Due to the constant change inherent in development work, the actual conditions, both in expected living conditions or work environment might be totally different from what is written here. Although we try to be as accurate as possible when composing these Volunteer Assignment Descriptions (VADs), changes will occur before you arrive in Niue. You will meet many unexpected challenges in your two years. Often these challenges offer the best opportunities for a rewarding volunteer experience. Please be aware of these factors and take them into account when contemplating whether or not you will commit to spend two years in Niue.
Niue Geography
Niue is a raised coral island with a circumference of 64 km. (40 mi.) and an area of about 260 sq. km. (about 100-sq. mi.). The island's perimeter consists of uneven cliffs that drop abruptly into the sea. A plateau that rises about 61 m. (about 200 ft.) above sea level marks the interior. The plateau is surrounded by a lower level, with an average elevation of about 27 m. (about 90 ft). A broken fringing reef encircles Niue. The climate is tropical and humid. The average annual temperature is 27 degrees C (81 F) and annual rainfall is about 7700 mm (about 303 in.). Niue has two main seasons: a hotter, rainy season from November to March and a cooler, drier season from April to October. High winds and occasional hurricanes strike in the rainy season. Niue is covered with forest and light vegetation. Because of a shallow and scanty soil cover, cultivation is difficult. Animal life is limited on the island, but fish are abundant in coastal waters. Nine is sometimes referred to as the most unspoiled island in the Pacific. Though a recent tourism motto was "Discover Tranquillity," in order to attract tourists, they changed the motto to "Rock of the Pacific."

It is commonly known as "Rock of Polynesia". Although it is self-governing, it is in free association with New Zealand, and most nations regard it as a territory of that nation. Niue is located 2,400 kilometres north-east of New Zealand in a triangle between Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands.

    History
European involvement in Niue began in 1774 with Captain James Cook's sighting (landing was refused) of what he named "Savage Island". The next major arrival was the London Missionary Society in 1846. Briefly a protectorate, the UK's involvement was passed on in 1901 when New Zealand annexed the island. Independence in the form of self-government was granted by the New Zealand parliament in the 1974 constitution. In January of 2004, Niue was hit by the fierce tropical storm Cyclone Heta which killed two people and did extensive damage to the entire island.
