niue is affectionately known as “The Rock” and is reputedly the largest coral a modern lifestyle, while still maintaining their traditional culture.
http://www.travelonline.co.nz/travelguide/niue/niue-main.html
GENERAL INFORMATION Niue is affectionately known as “The Rock” and is reputedly the largest coral atoll in the world. It is located only 2400 km north-east of New Zealand in the centre of a triangle made up of the Polynesian islands. Niue is a little more than three hours away from Auckland, and its isolation and geological make up, creates an exciting rugged coastline, which forms coral coves, private pools and a fascinating tropical paradise. The island is honeycombed with caves, ringed with azure blue water and is topped by a tropical rainforest. Niue is without streams or rivers, therefore there is no silt run off and the result is some of the clearest water in the world with underwater visibility often more than 40 metres. There is an abundance of unique wildlife, birds and plants. Captain Cook once named Niue the 'Savage Island' but now Niuean’s are hospitable, and welcome all visitors with open arms.

VIDEO CLIMATE . The weather is generally pleasant all year round.
CLOTHING Pareaus (Sarong) are often worn around swimwear in public. In general, tropical attire is recommended to suit the weather. Light-weight cotton casual wear is most suitable, with warmer wear for evenings during the June/July period.

ANRAI is Auckland Niue Rugby Association Inc.
It is the organisation set up to arrange and organise the Village Competition in Auckland.
It is a Village concept based only and will not accept private clubs.
There are 13 Villages involved in conjuction with our homeland Niue Island which has the 13 Villages.
Firstly formed as the NIASA run society with the base mainly with the Auckland Niue P.I.P.C Church in Newton where all the Villages are represented.
The Village Elders still hold a great influence in team submissions.
ANRAI was later formed as part of the NIASA branches in 1999. Part of the reason was to be independant therefore easier to apply for funds but still maintain links with NIASA and still is under the umbrella of the NIASA organisation.
This is to maintain the relationship between the Village Elders and ANRAI thus allowing Villages to use Village name's within the ANRAI Organisation.
ANRAI has relied mainly on this relationship to further it's profile in Auckland and also maintain this unique Village concept. ANRAI will always remain within each Village Community.

Background
Niue is a large, raised coral island lying approximately equidistant between Samoa in the north, Tonga in the west and Rarotonga in the east. Culturally, Niue is part of West Polynesia; the people speak a language which is related to that of Tonga, and oral traditions record prehistoric interaction with Tongan peoples. However, it seems apparent that Niue does not share some of the main features of West Polynesian cultural history. The main islands of Fiji and West Polynesia (Samoa and Tonga) were settled as part of the Lapita colonisation of the south-west Pacific. About 4000 years ago these Austronesian, pottery making peoples developed a sailing and navigation technology which allowed them to move away from the large continental islands of Melanesia and venture into the remote reaches of Oceania. Slightly before 3000 years ago, after colonising all the major archipelagos from New Guinea to New Caledonia, the Lapita people moved into Fiji and West Polynesia. In West Polynesia, the eastward expansion appears to have ceased and the earliest confirmed dates from cultural layers east of Samoa date at least 1500 years later than the first arrival of Lapita in Fiji. This apparent pause in the Fiji-West Polynesia region has long puzzled archaeologists. Did Lapita simply run out of steam, or did they encounter some cultural or technological impediment to further voyaging?

Part 1 Descriptive Sections Introduction. Niue is a beautiful island in the Pacific Ocean. It is known to be the largest coral island in the world [approximately 260 km2] with a circumference of 64km of road. The island is an estimated 19km from north to south Niue is isolated, situated between Tonga and Samoa, and is a self-governing state [in association with New Zealand] In 1997 the population numbered 2088 people, 35% of which lived in the capital town of Alofi. Niueans are New Zealand citizens and consequently have free access to New Zealand. The 1996 census showed that 18,474 Niueans live in New Zealand. The dwindling population of Niue is a major concern as more islanders emigrate in search of what is perceived to be a better standard of living. There is one primary school on the island, one secondary school and one early childhood education facility. Niue islanders grow their own food crops. Taro is the main export crop and there is also a thriving handicrafts industry. With the spectacular and diverse scenery and activities that Niue has to offer the tourist industry is slowly improving. However, only one flight a week is scheduled to Niue and this is not condusive to the faster life of the main tourism circuit.
