The upraised coral atoll, affectionately known as “The Rock of Polynesia”, is situated in the south-west Pacific Ocean, just over 3 hours north of New Zealand and the only land mass in the centre of a triangle of Polynesian islands made up of Tonga, Samoa and The Cook Islands.
The coral make up of the island and the surging Pacific Ocean has created a rugged coastline of soaring archways, deep chasms, cool caves, fascinating rock pools and intimate swimming coves. A fringe of coral reef clings to Niue’s sides before plunging to abyssal depths. As there are no sandy beaches, streams or rivers on Niue, the rains filter through the porous coral out into the warm waters of the Pacific, completely devoid of any silt runoff. This allows the surrounding ocean to remain crystal clear with visibility often reaching up to 70 metres - wonderful for diving.

‘Ai Mavehe’ Niue December 2001 Niue is a tiny Polynesian island nation in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. When you think of Niue you think remote. It’s out there by itself without neighbors for hundreds of miles. Niue is its own sovereign country that owns a unique language and culture. Its autonomy, however, is a bit artificial with substantial subsidies from New Zealand. Niueans enjoy a dual citizenship and can hold a New Zealand passport upon request. Unfortunately, when direct flights to Auckland were initiated there was a mass exodus of Islanders seeking money and opportunity. There are estimated to be 17,000 Niueans now living in New Zealand, while only 1,800 people actually reside in Niue. Of those, only 1,500 are actually Niueans. The others include Tongans, Vanuatuans, Cook Islander Maoris, Kiwis, Australians, Europeans, and Americans (only three of these). While it is sad that so few people remain in such a beautiful and interesting place, those people who are left have a reason to be there.

By contrast, there are estimated to be over 18,500 Niueans living in New Zealand. The vast majority are undoubtedly contributing usefully to society and almost certainly paying more in tax than the roughly $NZ432.50 per head that they are de facto contributing to their Niue-resident brethren. hell country . Neither is twenty two-off thousand, if you count those Niueans resident in New Zealand (and boy, when reading up on Niue, do you hear that phrase a lot!) Twenty So what are we getting out of this Canute-like attitude to reality? What is it that keeps us in effect taxing New Zealand-resident Niueans, then sending their tax money to their stay-at-home cousins? that much, right? Right? Yaeyama Islands; Linking Asia and the Pacific The second of a five-report series
    By Max Quanchi,
TTPF co-coordinator, Queensland University of Technology.

A short visit to the Yaeyama Islands in the southern Okinawa archipelago immediately indicates many intriguing aspects of local geography, culture, history, society and contemporary development. In all these aspects, even a short stay demonstrates there are many similarities between Yaeyama and the islands of the south and north Pacific in both the distant past and in the contemporary period. The delegation from the south Pacific included history teachers and lecturers from Samoa, Papua New Guinea, and Niue. Our immersion in Yaeyama Island culture and politics began with a visit to Yaeyama Senior High School and a brief appearance in front of a world history class. With the Principal and senior staff our delegation also discussed problems associated with youth, outer island education and history teaching, noting many similarities between Yaeyama and the islands of the Pacific. This was followed by a two-day program which included visits to the Prefecture Offices, Lord Mayor, Museum, Cultural Preservation Office, Uganzaki peninsula and lighthouse, Kabira shell mound, Kabira Bay, a palm forest, Mount Banna, the memorial to Ishigaki victims who were relocated and died during the Pacific War, and most impressive of all, Taketomi Island. The visit to Taketomi included the ruins of two 13th century villages, a walk through the Historic Preservation precinct of Taketomi village and a visit to the Taketomi Museum. With staff from a local archaeological survey offering instruction, this visit demonstrated the unique culture that developed in the Yaeyama Islands quite separate from the 18th century Japanese influences of the Satsuma period coming down from the north, and linked directly to much earlier migrations and influences from China and perhaps Taiwan and the Philippines to the south. The visit to Taketomi was an amazing discovery for myself, a teacher and researcher of Pacific History for 25 years - here was another "Pacific island" with an archaeological and historical record linked to the early migrations which also peopled the islands of the Pacific.

    Political Overview
    Partnership with New Zealand
Niue is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand, an arrangement dating from October 1974. Prior to 1974, and dating from 1901, Niue was a dependent territory of New Zealand. Niueans are New Zealand citizens with right of free access to New Zealand. As Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II is represented by a Governor General, who is also the Governor General for New Zealand. Niue's Parliament is the Niue Assembly and consists of 20 members (14 constituency or village seats, and 6 common roll seats) elected every three years by universal suffrage. The 20 members elect a Premier, who then selects three cabinet ministers from the other 19 members. Assembly Members currently all serve as independents and appoint a Speaker from outside their ranks.

PALAU HOSTS 9TH FESTIVAL OF PACIFIC ARTS By Ruci Farrell All eyes will be on Palau in July when the tiny island republic hosts more than 2000 artists and officials from around the Pacific for the 9th Festival of Pacific Arts.
Palau or Belau, home to 19,700 people and situated south east of the Phillipines and north of Papua New Guinea, has a colourful heritage with influences from its Spanish, English, Japanese and American captors.
Described in tourist brochures as the Lonely Planet, Palau will be jolted into prominence as artists from 27 different countries gather for one of the most important indigenous cultural events in the Pacific.
Held every four years, the Festival of Pacific Arts creates a sense of Pacificness among island communities and is described as the principal platform for the collective participation in expressions of traditional and contemporary cultures of the Pacific. The traditional welcoming of the canoe flotilla will be at dawn on July 22. Weavers, storytellers, carvers, dancers, firewalkers, traditional healers, tattooists, jewellers, potters, singers, theatre groups, tapa makers and musicians will share and exchange the many treasures unique to their own countries.

Max and I have been tracking the earth activities as we have been listening to Source and the Earth communicate to us.
A succession of earthquakes and other types of earth activities have been occuring and we are seeing how our messages are starting to become more specific. In this case, Pacifically specific!
We have since then heard (Monday 12th our time), that there would be significant activity to occur this year, in the following areas: ongoing activity along the West Coast (we assume the USA), France (a Shake up), strong activity in the West Indies and a significant event (devastation) in Africa (Kenya/Nairobi).
On the 31st of December, Max and I were told that there would be severe storm activity (the Islands would be getting a good shake up!!) in the Polynesian Islands soon. Then on the 5th of January we saw the headlines of the local paper while away on vacation.
Niue Island and neighboring islands were hit by a very damaging cyclone. There had been much devastation, homes lost and we heard today from a Polynesian acquaintance (ex Prime Minister), that many of the islanders want to vacate the island. Below are a few dated reports about the storm/cyclone. The first is only a small excerpt about the cyclone.
