Population: 2,150 . var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia Niue nēū ) , coral island (2004 pop. 1,766), c.100 sq mi (260 sq km), South Pacific, freely associated with New Zealand. Alofi is the capital. The inhabitants are mainly Protestant Polynesians. Niue, once known as Savage Island, has fertile soil and exports coconut milk, copra, honey, and fruit. The island, which is heavily dependent on aid from New Zealand, has an autonomous internal government. Declining population threatens Niue's economic health and the survival of its language; Polynesians of Niuean descent in New Zealand outnumber Niueans ten to one. The tropical island of Niue is situated 19˚south of the Equator. It’s 2,200 km's northeast of New Zealand, 386 km's east of Tonga and 900 km's west of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. This position puts it eleven hours behind Greenwich Mean Time and twenty-three hours behind New Zealand standard time. It is one of the worlds largest emerged coral atolls, a saucer shaped island made from the basement of an isolated volcanic cone, 64 km's in circumference with an area of 260 sq. km's. It rises no more than 69 m above sea level, and was exposed as a result of dropping sea levels in the last million years. It is protected from the direct effects of the sea by a terraced limestone reef with living coral just beneath sea level. Most of the coast rises 20 - 30 m straight out of the sea, so it boasts initimate coves rather than the beach coastline typical of islands. Size
Niue is much larger than the entire Cook’s group of fifteen islands put together, yet we only have less than one tenth of their population. There really are no crowds at all. We are small, but not tiny, since at 269 sq. kms of land area, Niue is over four times the size of Rarotonga – which covers 67.2 sq. km. Our entire population of about 1500 people live in only 14 widely dispersed villages. The rest of the island comprises virgin rainforest and farmland. We don’t recommend it, but there's a lot of space to get really lost, if you want to.

Shopping
Niue is not a 24-hour, 7-day culture. Getting your shopping done requires a bit of careful timing and planning to avoid the inconvenience of running out. The islands major supermarket keeps limited hours due to the religious beliefs of its owners, so runs from Monday to Friday 9AM to 4PM. Outside these hours some smaller shops are open, but carry less range. These stores are often located in houses within villages – if in doubt just ask around! Traditional Art
Niuean weaving is considered amongst the finest in the Pacific and the local women are very proud of their skills; hats, mats, bags and baskets are made from locally grown pandanus in totally traditional, fully manual methods. None of the artworks you will find for sale are made in a factory in China, or anywhere but Niue! Each village show-day showcases these and other handcrafts, and there are a few shops in Alofi that sell these crafts to visitors. These are not mass-produced and are increasingly rare works of art! Alternatively, if you’re after something special, you can also ask around within local villages – Niue is that kind of place! Home About Niue Getting to Niue Latest News ... Useful Links

Religion
Niueans are in the main a religious people – a legacy of the London Missionary Society’s activities on the atoll from 1846. Niue’s main church, the Ekalesia Niue (Christian Church of Niue), was founded by the society, which established a New Zealand branch in 1994. In 2001, 76% of New Zealand Niueans (most of them older or Niuean-born) were actively involved with church groups. Especially popular were Presbyterianism (49%) and Catholicism (13%). A few followed the Mormon (11%), Anglican (5%) and Methodist (4%) faiths.
Language
Between 1846 and 1890 missionaries on Niue formalised the alphabet, translating the Bible ( Ko e Tohi Tapu ) and a hymn book ( Ko e Tau Lologo Tapu ). Efforts to preserve the language continued in New Zealand in the 20th century with the publication of a dictionary and revised hymnbook.
In their own tongue
Unlike many Pacific peoples, Niueans did not initially give Niuean names to new objects based on the sound of English words. Instead, they invented names in terms that were meaningful to them. Examples include vakalele (flying canoe) for aeroplane, vaka-tavilivili (whirling canoe) for helicopter, mama pala (damp lungs) for tuberculosis, and mata-afi (fire fragment) for matches.

niue was indeed barbaric in its culture and behaviour with only stone tools.introduction some thoughts about the history and society of niue
http://www.seafriends.org.nz/niue/history.htm
A short history of Niue On this page we have brought together interesting facts and thoughts about the history of Niue, about which very little has been written. Niue is not only isolated by its location in the south Pacific, but its policies of quarantine against introduced diseases, isolated it even further. So, by the time missionaries were allowed to preach the Gospel, Niue was indeed barbaric in its culture and behaviour with only stone tools.

Introduction
If one is disappointed at not seeing the beautiful vistas of cloud-wreathed mountains sweeping down to romantic beaches as on neighbouring volcanic islands, one has to admit that Niue has a distinctive beauty all of its own. Sheltered rocky coves, jewel-like reef pools, noble headlands, awesome tropical forest, scattered coconut and taro plantations, neat colourful villages, comprise an island of almost 100 square miles. These are words from the book Niue, a history of the island

I'm a self-taught artist and I love sculpture, I do sculpture which is a very new thing in Niue, especially coming from such a small island of one-thousand-800 people. Not that many people do contemporary art in Niue." Moira Enetama "I am the only woman who knows about contemporary art, but I think there are so many young people who are talented, I have noticed that, but it's just a matter of coming out and expressing themselves." Installed in a shipping container transformed in a traditional cookhouse Tulana Mahu offers a welcoming and cosy environment. It's an intriguing collection of installations full of universal and local symbols, imported and traditional values, gently inviting the visitor to reflect on tradition and change, and which change?

    Snapshot
Niue is a small, isolated country 550 kilometres southeast of Samoa. There are about 1500 people in 14 villages on the island and village life remains the focus for Niue's cultural and political organisation. Niue has been self-governed in free association with New Zealand since 1974 and all Niueans are New Zealand citizens. While Niue's economy is dependent on substantial development assistance from New Zealand, the Niue government is committed to increasing the country's economic self-reliance. Tourism offers the most significant prospect for economic development, but its advancement depends on improved air services. Niue suffers from a declining population through migration and limited physical resources. While absolute poverty is non-existent, the country remains vulnerable to poverty and there is also poverty of opportunity.

The Halavaka ke he Monuina Arrangement (HkhMA) for a Programme of Strengthened Cooperation ( SCP ) with Niue was signed by the New Zealand Prime Minister and the Niue Premier on 30 October 2004. The arrangenement facilitates closer cooperation between New Zealand and Niue government agencies, representing a major shift in New Zealand's approach to managing its relationship with Niue.
