BACK Niueans take pride in their many cultural traditions have been handed down from generation to generation.
Women weavers are highly respected for the original design and quality of their craft and a fine array of hats, mats, and baskets made from local materials are readily available.
Niue's unique traditions and festivals include haircutting (for boys) and ear piercing ceremonies (for girls). These gatherings are usually held on a Saturday in private homes. Families welcome visitors to these occasions when permission is asked beforehand. It is an opportunity to see and witness a local tradition and share in that experience with the host family.
Sunday is a day of rest and worship and visitors are asked to be considerate of the Sunday observations. Fishing and boating are not undertaken, but many play golf or go sight seeing. Anyone not sure of Sunday protocols are welcome to check at the Niue Information Office in Alofi for guidance.

Polynesian culture refers to the aboriginal culture of the Polynesian -speaking peoples of Polynesia and the Polynesian outliers . Chronologically, the development of Polynesian culture can be divided into four different historical eras:

Exploration and settlement (c.1800 B.C. to 700 A.D.)
Archaeological and linguistic evidence suggests that the first Polynesians entered the Tongan islands sometime around 1800 B.C., bringing with them the Lapita culture which originated in the Santa Cruz Islands The early Polynesians were skillful navigators , capable, by careful observations of cloud reflections and bird flight patterns, to determine the existence and location of islands. Archaeological evidence indicates that by about 700 A.D., every inhabitable island in the vast triangle of Polynesia had been colonized. By comparison, Viking navigators first settled Iceland around 175 years later.

Many are still being observed today such as our "kaloama season" where seasonal 'sardine like' fish visit our shores. When the Kaloama run, some reef areas are closed from public swimming but there are still numerous other swimming pools and coves that can be used during that short period. You need only ask for guidance from locals or at the Niue Information & Booking Centre. Haircutting and Ear Piercing Ceremonies
A major event for a teenage boy is his haircutting ceremony, when the long tail of hair that he has kept since childhood is removed. Guests invited to the concurrent feast each contribute hundreds of dollars to a fund that goes to the boy after the celebration costs are paid. For girls there is a similar ear piercing ceremony. These gatherings are usually held on a Saturday in private homes. Families welcome visitors to these occasions when permission is asked beforehand. It is an opportunity to see and witness a local tradition and share in that experience with the host family.

Life is a celebration for people in Niue. As well as the usual birth and marriage ceremonies, they also celebrate when a child reaches maturity, at about 13. This significant event is marked by much feasting and, for a teenage boy, the long tail of hair that he has kept since childhood is cut off. Girls have their ears pierced.
Art and Craft
Craftwork plays an important part in daily life in Niue. Not only is it for practical use, such as hats, mats and baskets, but also it has ceremonial and decorative purposes. Women's craft in particular is very talented, and is becoming a source of income for families as tourism increases.

Covering an area of 259sq km, Niue is believed to be the world’s largest upraised coral atoll. It has a rugged coastline with small coves rather than the long sandy beaches typical of many South Pacific islands. Niue is dotted with numerous limestone caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Some of the caves on dry land are used for the storage of canoes while others were once ancient burial sites. Guides are available to take travellers to the more remote sites. Lush rainforest covers large areas of Niue, abounding in myths and legends, and there are bushwalks in the Huvalu Forest conservation area.
The Niuean people are friendly and hospitable and take great pride in their traditions and culture. Sunday in Niue is a day of rest and worship and visitors are asked to respect this. Sunday protocol prevents such activities as fishing and boating, although it is permissible to play golf, go sightseeing or swimming. Niue, now governed independently, was once annexed to New Zealand and Niue's citizens still hold dual citizenship.
Take a travel holiday/vacation to Niue and explore the world's largest upraised coral atoll.

NIUE ROCK OF POLYNESIA Niue is reputedly the largest upraised coral atoll in the world. The island's isolation and coral makeup create an exciting rugged coastline and reef which provide intimate swimming coves with crystal clear visibility which is superb for diving. The land mass of Niue is 259 square kilometres with a population of 2,000 scattered throughout thirteen villages which are dotted around the saucer shaped island. Located in the triangle between Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands, Niue is 2,400 kilometres north-east of New Zealand on the eastern side of the International Dateline. THE PEOPLE Niueans are Polynesians and are bilingual, speaking both Niuean and English. They are very friendly people who enjoy a modern lifestyle while still maintaining their traditional culture. The English navigator Captain James Cook sighted Niue in 1774 but was refused landing three times by Niuean warriors. Cook departed but chartered Niue and named it "Savage Island". Missionaries established Christianity in 1846, but in 1901, Niue annexed to New Zealand. Independence was given in free association with New Zealand in 1974 meaning that Niueans are self-governing but hold New Zealand citizenship in the same way as the Cook Islanders. THE SIGHTS Niue is well known for its spectacular limestone cave and the unique scenic and historical areas throughout the island. The whole island is dotted with myriads of caves that have yet to be explored. The flora and fauna are spectacular particularly in the untouched Huvalu forest which is a conservation area.

Home Vacations Currency Converter Reservations ... About Us General Information about the Island of Niue Niue is affectionately known as 'the rock' and is one of the largest upraised coral atoll in the world. A single land mass in the center of a triangle of Polynesian islands, made up of Tonga, Western Samoa and the Cook Islands. Niue is located 2400 km north-east of New Zealand, on the eastern side of the International Dateline and is 11 hours behind Greenwich meantime. The islands isolation and coral makeup create an exciting rugged coastline and reef which provides intimate swimming coves as opposed to the typical long stretches of sandy beaches so predominant elsewhere in Polynesia.
The landmass of Niue is 259 sq. km, and 13 villages are found along Niue's 67-km circle island road. The whole island is two tiered but is dotted with a myriad of caves that have yet to be discovered. Shaped like a saucer and rising only 65 meters above sea level, Niue is without streams or rivers, and therefore after rain the water filters through the porous coral out into the ocean completely devoid of any silt run-off. This allows the surrounding sea to be crystal clear with dive visibility often up to 70 meters. The flora and fauna are spectacular with butterflies everywhere, and an abundance of bougainvillea, frangipani, hibiscus and orchids. A variety of ferns and profusion of 'crows nest' grow amongst wild rhododendron and poinsettia. There is a rich bird life with weka, swamp kens, parakeets and white tailed terns.
