The problem of nature
Heidegger argues that the eternal return is either non-philosophic mysticism or a philosophy borrowed from Heraclitus. In either event, Nietzsche failed in his attempted break with metaphysics, and was merely another in the long line of philosophers who misunderstood the importance of Being.
Rorty follows Heidegger in celebrating the end of Western metaphysics. For Rorty, postmodernism is, at its root, the rejection of an objective view of nature. The belief in absolute value, Rorty claims, originates in Greek philosophy and continues on into the Enlightenment and includes even Heidegger.
us have In effect, Rorty replaces Nature and Truth with a series of dynamic socio-historical agreements, making philosophy in the platonic sense neither possible nor desirable.
TL For Rorty, Nietzsche summarizes perfectly the major precept of postmodernism. So dependent on Nietzsche is Rorty that if Nietzsche did not exist, Rorty would have to invent him.

NIHILISM
Jay Bryant argues that we should make a distinction between nihilism and Islam, with the terrorists representing the former rather than the latter. In Latin, "nihil" means "nothing," and so a nihilist is, technically, a believer in nothing. All human institutions are worthless to a nihilist, and more importantly, so are all human values. The universe is a pointless, existentialist place, utterly without meaning. So the question for us today is whether or not it is reasonable to brand as nihilists the Islamic terrorists whose actions from Iraq to Chechnya appear utterly consistent with Bakunin's directive to "have only one thought, the destruction of everything without pity." It is a question of more than mere semantics. In formulating a policy to deal with the terrorists – an intellectual construct that goes beyond whatever the military necessity may be – we will be led down a different path if we think of the enemy as a believer in nothing, than if we think of him as a believer in a religious doctrine. There are many ways in which this is true, but one of the most important is that it offers a means of separating the terrorist from the decent Muslim. So long as al-Qaeda terrorists are seen by Muslims simply as practitioners of a radical version of the true religion, they will retain a measure of legitimacy, perhaps even the sort of wary admiration reserved in all religions for those whose faith is so strong as to permit them to abnegate their own comfort and well-being toward holy ends.

Knock knock. Neo is startled by the late arrival of Troy, his punky friend, who comes seeking rather expensive hacked software. Our hero retrieves the program from his stash inside a hollowed-out book of philosophy by Jean Baudrillard entitled "Simulation and Simulacra." In a film chocked full of symbolism, this seemingly innocuous moment is actually one of the more blatant significations employed in The Matrix. We all know the Wachowski brothers are quite well rounded when it comes to serving up metaphors, covering everything in the film from Lewis Carroll to Plato to Jesus Christ. Baudrillard provides them with a springboard by which they explore contemporary thinking and plays a more fundamental role in their creativity than one might expect at first blush.

The text survives only in summary form in Sextus Empiricus, and Aristotle's On Melissus, Xeonphanes, and Gorgias The second proposition of Gorgias, that if anything exists it cannot be known, is part and parcel of the whole Sophistic tendency of thought, which identifies knowledge with sense-perception, and ignores the rational element. Since sense-impressions differ in different people, and even in the same person, the object as it is in itself cannot be known. The third proposition follows from the same identification of knowledge with sensation, since sensation is what cannot be communicated.

Nihilism as a philosophical position is the view that the world, and especially human existence, is without meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth , or essential value. It is more often a charge levelled against a particular idea than a position to which someone is overtly subscribed. Movements such as Dada Deconstructionism , and Punk have been described by various observers as "nihilist". Nihilism is also a characteristic that has been ascribed to time periods: for example, Baudrillard has called postmodernity a nihilistic epoch, and some Christian theologians and figures of authority assert that modernity and postmodernity represent the rejection of God, and therefore are nihilist. Prominent philosophers that have written on nihilism include Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger . Nietzsche described Christianity as a nihilistic religion, because it removed meaning from this earthly life, and focused instead on a supposed afterlife. He also saw nihilism as a natural result of the idea that "God is Dead", and insisted that it was something to be overcome, by returning meaning to the earth. Heidegger described nihilism as the state where "there is nothing left of Being as such", and argued that nihilism rested on the reduction of being to mere value.

The term nihilism (from the Latin nihil , meaning "not anything") was popularized by the Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev in his novel Fathers and Sons ) to describe the views of an emerging radical Russian intelligentsia . These consisted primarily of upper-class students who had grown disillusioned with the slow pace of reformism . The primary spokesman for this new philosophy was D. I. Pisarev ) who articulated a program of Revolutionary Utilitarianism and advocated violence as a tool for social change. Pisarev was cast as Bazarov in Fathers and Sons much to his own delight; he proudly embraced his new status as a fictional hero and villain.

(Nietzsche 1969, p. 298) Abstract
A connection is often made between postmodernism and nihilism, but the full meaning of such a connection is rarely explored. The contemporary Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo is one of the few philosophers to have devoted much work to explaining this connection. Vattimo extrapolates the relevance of Nietzsche’s theory of nihilism for the postmodern condition, arguing that the concept of the postmodern can only be thought rigorously in relation to the nihilistic destiny of the West. This article explores Vattimo’s postmodern reading of Nietzsche and argues that this reading helps to illuminate (1) the connection between nihilism and the postmodern; (2) the postmodern transformation of nihilism, which was originally a theory of the ails of modernity rather than of postmodernity; and (3) why postmodernists may wish to affirm nihilism rather than take the accusation that postmodernism is nihilistic as a charge that must be refuted. Postmodernism as a mode of thought is often accused of being nihilistic, and postmodernity is often seen as a nihilistic state of society.

Library Journal "Nihilism and Emancipation gives an excellent picture of Gianni Vattimo's recent work, of the interesting and original challenges he offers to what are often seen as philosophical certainties. Even those who disagree with where Vattimo ultimately takes his argument would benefit from pondering his suggestive and imaginative remapping of our philosophical landscape."
A daring marriage of philosophical theory and practical politics, this collection is the first of Gianni Vattimo's many books to combine his intellectual pursuits with his public and political life. Vattimo is a paradoxical figure, at once a believing Christian and a vociferous critic of the Catholic Church, an outspoken liberal but not a former communist, and a recognized authority on Nietzsche and Heidegger as well as a prominent public intellectual and member of the European parliament. Building on his unique position as a philosopher and politician, Vattimo takes on some of the most pressing questions of our time: Is it still possible, long after Nietzsche proclaimed the death of God, to talk of moral imperatives, individual rights, or political freedom? Are these values still relevant in today's world?

Term Paper #60027 Add to Cart (You can always remove it later) Dostoevsky's Critique of Nihilism
Examines Fyodor Dostoevsky's views on nihilism through several of his works. 2,178 words ( approx. 8.7 pages ), 6 sources, MLA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
Abstract
Dostoevsky, clearly an existentialist, focused much of his literary work on debunking nihilism. Because he believed that human natural could only be fully displayed through the supernatural, Dostoevsky fought the growing trend of applying scientific and rational thought to all aspects of the human experience. By examining some of his most important passages in his works, "Notes From the Underground", "Crime and Punishment" and "The Brothers Karamazov", this paper displays the clear battle that the author fought during his literary career, ultimately culminating in the defeat of Ivan Karamazov in "The Brothers Karamazov".
From the Paper:
"Dostoevsky was concerned with the dangers of Nihilism. He believed that reason, while the prevalent thought in society, could do little to explain human nature. In so codifying human behavior and necessitating a need for predictable outcomes, Dostoevsky surmised that reason would overstep its own laws in a desire to curtail human nature and explain natural irrationality. He believed that predictions could do little to explain love, passion, personality, individuality; it could only offer a formula on how to suppress it. Rationality, along with industrialization, psychology, and capitalism, sought to replace free-choice for, as he would put it later, a loaf of bread."

Introduction
The purpose of this guide is to help the philosopher and philosophy student with one of the bothersome tasks of research: finding philosophical and philosophy-related books in the library. It may also answer some questions for the curious library browser who, like myself, has wondered at the arrangements on the library shelves. Since this guide was first created (see the story below) the Philosophy Documentation Center has announced a forthcoming publication titled "Library of Congress Subject Headings in Philosophy." I have no knowledge of this work beyond their catalog description: "thesaurus of philosophical terms compiled from Library of Congress subject headings," so it might cover similar territory as my guide. If so, the high quality of all the Center's publications will no doubt inhere in that work as well, and in the meantime, I offer this guide to all who can use it. My only request is that my name be kept on any copies made. The Library of Congress publishes its classification, revisions, and instructions to its use on a regular basis to help other libraries with their collections. This guide tries to distill this information down to a manageable level suitable for an introduction to the classification. It begins with an overview of the classification and how to use it. Then the method used to classify philosophy is summarized. The bulk of this guide is a condensed version of the Philosophy classification volume. Also provided are lists of philosophy-related topics and where they are located.

Naturalism existentialism could be considered a humanistic form of individualism , but it differs from many other forms of humanism in denying ethical naturalism. In metaphysics, the word naturalism refers most often to the idea that nature operates according to natural laws, without spiritual intervention (opposed to theism and spiritualism , but compatible with deism ). In aesthetics, naturalism is the theory that art (and especially literature) should present human experience "as is", without evaluating reality or projecting ethical ideals (historically, naturalism in literature developed in reaction to romanticism ).
