(from Latin nihil, Messenger of Europe, applying it to Aleksandr Pushkin. Nadezhdin, as did V. Bervi later in 1858, equated nihilism with skepticism . Mikhail N. Katkov, a well-known conservative journalist mainly responsible for interpreting nihilism as synonymous with revolution, presented nihilism as constituting a social menace by its negation of all moral principles. It was Ivan Turgenev in his celebrated novel Fathers and Sons (1862) who popularized the term through the figure of Bazarov the nihilist. Eventually the nihilists of the 1860s and '70s came to be regarded as disheveled, un tidy, unruly, ragged men who rebelled against tradition and social order. The philosophy of nihilism then began to be associated erroneously with the regicide of Alexander II (1881) and the political terror that was employed by those active at the time in clandestine organizations against absolutism. If to the conservative elements the nihilists were the curse of the time, to the liberals such as N.G. Chernyshevsky they represented a mere transitory factor in the development of national thought, a stage in the struggle for individual freedom, a true spirit of the rebellious young generation. In his novel What Is to Be Done?

HUM 320-4: The Humanities and Philosophy The Problem of Nihilism Department of Humanities, AQ 5115, 604-291-3689 Semester: Fall 2005 (1057), D1, Burnaby Instructor: S. Gandesha, AQ 5113, 604-291-3406 gandesha@sfu.ca Prerequisites 45 credit hours Course Description: The humanities comprises the efforts through the ages to understand the Òhuman conditionÓ in its various shapes and guises. As a consequence, it presupposes that the human experience is inherently meaningful. One of the great challenges posed to the humanistic tradition is therefore the problem of a loss or a crisis of meaning, meaninglessness or ÒnihilismÓ. By drawing on a number of sources that lie both within and outside of the discipline of philosophy, this course examines the causes and consequences of nihilism. Seminars While there will be occasional lectures to provide context, the course will follow a seminar format. Students will be required to do short presentations as a way of provoking discussion of the readings. They will also be called upon to give a short ÒprotocolÓ at the start of each class to summarize the main points of the previous class. Required Texts: I. Terganev

The Weak Subject
Peace and Nihilism Reconsidered
Using the notion of subjectivity as a guiding thread, the article explores the implications of European nihilism for the theoretical debate about peace. Most of the continental peace theories have been inspired by schools of thought associated with German Idealism and as a precondition for the social construction of peace. violence that fails to embrace the weakening of the subject is ineffective. Drawing upon the emancipatory interpretation of Nietzsche provided by Gianni Vattimo, the article seeks to recover a critique of violence that is based on a weak notion of subjectivity and no longer invokes any ultimate foundations. Instead, it

This work brings a wide-ranging and sophisticated collection of essays on modern architecture and culture to the attention of an English-speaking audience for the first time. [Access article in PDF] Philosophers owe Bruce Wilshire a debt of gratitude for this book, although in the current state of the profession that debt is likely to go unpaid. Although I do not agree with all of Wilshire's criticisms of mainstream analytic philosophy (hereafter "MAP") or all of his prescriptions for change, he treats serious issues with which philosophers should be grappling. Fashionable Nihilism provides a fine occasion to debate the nature and proper goals of philosophy.

Hibbs' class strikes chord with students

Not every scholar of medieval philosophy is prepared to dissect the head-spinning special effects in "The Exorcist" or the tongue-in-cheek bloodletting of "Pulp Fiction." That may be why 80 undergraduates crowd the ornate Fulton Debate Room in Gasson Hall three mornings a week to hear Assoc. Prof. Thomas Hibbs (Philosophy) hold forth, under the painted gaze of Cicero and St. Paul, on slasher pics. Hibbs, an Aquinas scholar who professes to "a perverse liking for horror films," has introduced a new course this semester, Nihilism and Popular Culture, which mulls the connection between Nietzsche and today's Hollywood hits. He also will give a public lecture, "Everything You Wanted to Know About 'The Exorcist' but Were Too Terrified to Ask" today at 7 p.m. in Devlin 008. The course was inspired by Hibbs' recently released book, Shows About Nothing: Nihilism in Popular Culture from 'The Exorcist' to 'Seinfeld,' which tracks the trajectory of evil in American film and television and links it to the spread of nihilism in American culture.

  • Necessary existence and the semantics of quantified modal logic: from materials drawn from Arthur Prior's work, I develop a new argument for necessary existence, the claim that everything is a necessary existent, and I argue that the lessons to be learned from this argument are that there are no true necessity claims about contingent existents and that the modal operators are not duals. Metaphysical nihilism: I develop with Tom Stoneham a valid and persuasive logical form of Tom Baldwin's subtraction argument ( Analysis 1996) for the claim that there might have been nothing concrete, and we then assess how the leading theories of modality might incorporate this claim. Finally, we argue that metaphysical nihilism is inconsistent with every interpretation of the truthmaker principle. The nature of God: I argue that there is no good reason to suppose that there might not have been co-existing omnipotent beings. The traditional argument, dating back at least to John Duns Scotus and still considered to be decisive, that there could

Instructor to be announced
The purpose of this course is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts of modern deductive logic, both in syntax and semantics. We start with sentential logic and discuss methods of constructing truth tables, truth trees, and derivations (for both the systems of SD and SD+). We then turn to predicate logic and consider certain differences and similarities between sentential and predicate logic and adjust the methods of truth trees and derivations to predicate logic. Introduction
Philosophy is concerned with the "Big Questions," such as Why are we here, What is the meaning of life, What is right and wrong, and How should we live our lives? Students who are researching philosophy can approach the subject historically by studying philosophers of the past, or thematically by comparing what people have thought about a particular subject. The problem of Nihilism in Fides et ratio
Vittorio Possenti In this encyclical, which deals with the necessary and fruitful encounter between faith and reason, the theme of nihilism, though not developed at great length, is of crucial importance. The fact that this is the first time a major document of the Church has touched on the topic (which was shelved by the second Vatican Council) confers a dramatic quality on Fides et Ratio , which deals with man's permanence in or escape from nihilism. By addressing the subject, the papal Letter produces two powerful effects: it places itself at the center of the spiritual situation of the present age, and it offers a determination of nihilism that has hitherto been lacking in the world's culture (an assertion that I attempt to motivate below). There is so far little awareness that the encyclical has contributed something new to the subject; and the reason for this is deeply rooted: the fields of philosophy and culture which still exist in the shadow of nihilism are incapable of perceiving its baleful influence, and even less capable of escaping from it. So it remains difficult to imagine how nihilism can be overcome. In my opinion, one factor of this outcome is the lack of a prior philosophical investigation of the subject, so that often the philosophical and the theological approaches overlap and cause confusion; or else the theological approach is taken up very prematurely without an adequate method for tackling the problem, i.e. without the conceptual infrastructure indispensable to deal with the arduous ontological problems entailed by the theological approach.

I get the uneasy feeling that you would happly throw a brick through the stained glass windows of Notre Dame cathedral because you can't see beyond it's christian theme for what it is, a beautiful & sublime work of human expression. Is that how "secularism" is defined by you guys? Sounds more like nihilism to me. Richard Carrier March 10, 2001, 10:25 PM Christianity as an ideology is usually much more like pop art: worth little more than the sequined shirt it is sewn on. Cathedrals are magnificent and practical works of mastery over nature. In contrast, The Trinity, for example, is a useless, ridiculous and confused idea cloaked in the jargon of high theology in a desperate attempt to make it seem like the sublime and brilliant thought produced by pagan philosophers. Few theologians have produced any really impressive literary masterpieces (the vast majority of so-called "Christian" literature, music and art is really among the worst, sappy tripe us humans have embarassed ourselves with), and those few works that win such merit still retain them even in the eyes of unbelievers. Milton comes to mind; but even the Christians admire the pagan religious epics of Virgil and Homer, so the feeling is mutual.
