'Creation science' has not entered the curriculum for a reason so simple and so basic that we often forget to mention it: because it is false, and because good teachers understand exactly why it is false. What could be more destructive of that most fragile yet most precious commodity in our entire intellectual heritage - good teaching - than a bill forcing honorable teachers to sully their sacred trust by granting equal treatment to a doctrine not only known to be false, but calculated to undermine any general understanding of science as an enterprise? - The Skeptical Enquirer

Contact Us Game Preview: Parthenon Posted on Jun. 02, 2005 by Rick Thornquist By Rick Thornquist June 3, 2004 Publisher: Z-Man Games in cooperation with Siren Bridge Publishing Designers: Andrew Parks and Jason O. Hawkins Artist: Stephen Graham Walsh Players: 3-6 Ages: 12 and up Playing Time: 2-3 Hours Parthenon is a new game and is the inaugural effort from a new game design studio - Siren Bridge Publishing. The game was designed by Andrew Parks, the designer of Ideology and Camelot Legends , and Jason O. Hawkins. The game was illustrated by Stephen Graham Walsh, who is known for the illustrations of the Mayfair Games versions of The Settlers of Catan and Here's a description of the game: "Parthenon: Rise of the Aegean" immerses you in an exciting, competitive world filled with aggressive trading, perilous voyages, and the construction of grand monuments. "Parthenon" is a game of commerce for 3 - 6 players set in the islands of the Aegean Sea. The time is 600 B.C., and mainland Greece stands on the threshold of glory. The Aegean Islands now attempt to share in that glory and to thrive in an increasingly profitable (and dangerous!) world. In "Parthenon," each player represents a different island in the Aegean Sea populated by two villages and a fleet of trading ships. Each island's villages produce commodities which are either traded with the other islands or sent abroad across the Mediterranean Sea. Fleets journeying to distant lands face the deadliest hazards, but also obtain the greatest rewards.

Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to those parts of this article) 1. Origins "Nihilism" comes from the Latin nihil , or nothing, which means not anything, that which does not exist. It appears in the verb "annihilate," meaning to bring to nothing, to destroy completely. Early in the nineteenth century, Friedrich Jacobi used the word to negatively characterize transcendental idealism. It only became popularized, however, after its appearance in Ivan Turgenev's novel Fathers and Sons (1862) where he used "nihilism" to describe the crude scientism espoused by his character Bazarov who preaches a creed of total negation. In Russia, nihilism became identified with a loosely organized revolutionary movement (C.1860-1917) that rejected the authority of the state, church, and family. In his early writing, anarchist leader Mikhael Bakunin (1814-1876) composed the notorious entreaty still identified with nihilism: "Let us put our trust in the eternal spirit which destroys and annihilates only because it is the unsearchable and eternally creative source of all lifethe passion for destruction is also a creative passion!" ( Reaction in Germany , 1842). The movement advocated a social arrangement based on rationalism and materialism as the sole source of knowledge and individual freedom as the highest goal. By rejecting man's spiritual essence in favor of a solely materialistic one, nihilists denounced God and religious authority as antithetical to freedom. The movement eventually deteriorated into an ethos of subversion, destruction, and anarchy, and by the late 1870s, a nihilist was anyone associated with clandestine political groups advocating terrorism and assassination.

LIFE AFTER DEATH, NIHILISM, AND MODERN PHILOSOPHY
(Third Millennium Final Edition - corrections and revisions are continuing)
What Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, Existentialism, etc., Really Say About Your Future
Do you believe that life does end, or may end, at death? Everyone who believes that death may be the end should read the following essay from cover to cover. It represents a serious attempt to identify what may be a critical flaw in the foundation of many modern philosophies. It will help those who study Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, and Existentialism, recognize questions that are probably already on their minds. It will address essential questions that you need to seek answers for. We will suggest that, whether they realize and admit it or not, anyone who does not believe in an "afterlife" is necessarily a "nihilist". In response to what appears to be a strong, intuitive, predisposition of readers to dismiss the conclusions of this essay as simply wrong, it has grown from a few pages to a lengthy, sometimes difficult to read, somewhat rambling, occasionally boring, text. For those who want a shorter introduction to our thoughts on nihilism, please read the summary of this essay by clicking here . Most readers will want to read the summary before proceeding with the detailed analysis. Those who choose to continue with this version may also find the summary interesting, as it includes some additional materials (the summary is from a chapter in a book we publish, which we provide links to at the end of this essay).

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
God's death or nonexistence is a quintessential nihilistic concern.
This article is about the philosophical position. For the Russian political and revolutionary movement, see Nihilist movement
Nihilism as a philosophical position is the view that the world, and especially human existence, is without meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth , or essential value. It is more often a charge levelled against a particular idea than a position to which someone is overtly subscribed. Movements such as Dada Deconstructionism , and Punk have been described by various observers as "nihilist". Nihilism is also a characteristic that has been ascribed to time periods: for example, Baudrillard has called postmodernity a nihilistic epoch, and some Christian theologians and figures of authority assert that modernity and postmodernity represent the rejection of God, and therefore are nihilist. Prominent philosophers that have written on nihilism include Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger . Nietzsche described Christianity as a nihilistic religion, because it removed meaning from this earthly life, and focused instead on a supposed afterlife. He also saw nihilism as a natural result of the idea that "God is Dead", and insisted that it was something to be overcome, by returning meaning to the earth. Heidegger described nihilism as the state where "there is nothing left of Being as such", and argued that nihilism rested on the reduction of being to mere value.
