of Nigeria
Background:
Following nearly 16 years of military rule, a new constitution was adopted in 1999 and a peaceful transition to civilian government completed. The new president faces the daunting task of rebuilding a petroleum-based economy, whose revenues have been squandered through corruption and mismanagement, and institutionalizing democracy. In addition, the OBASANJO administration must defuse longstanding ethnic and religious tensions, if it is to build a sound foundation for economic growth and political stability.

Postgraduate Information Suggested Topics Urban and peri-urban food production in Africa Supervisor: Dr Tony Binns, School of African and Asian Studies, J.A.Binns@sussex.ac.uk Large quantities of food are produced within and in close proximity to Africa's towns and cities, providing an important contribution to urban diets and generating income for producers and traders. But there are many problems associated with such production and some would question the relevance of urban agriculture in creating future 'sustainable cities'. Bio Dr. Aondover Tarhule joined the Geography Department in 1999 following a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. His expertise is in physical hydrology (specifically the analysis of extreme events such as floods and droughts). His research interests include hydro-climatic reconstruction and rural water issues particularly in the Sahel Savanna zone of West Africa. Dr. Tarhule applies geo-electric techniques to investigate various water issues in shallow alluvial aquifers. An on-going project is exploring the feasibility of using tree-ring analysis to reconstruct floods and droughts in the Sahel. Education Ph.D., Geography, McMaster University, 1997

Introduction Search bibliography Nigeria General Information The environment ranges from the mangrove swamps and tropical rainforest in the lower elevations along the coast, to the open woodland and savanna on the low plateau which extends through much of the central part of the country, to the semiarid plains in the north. Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has a population of 133 millions accounting for about one-fifth of the total population of sub-Saharan Africa. The population is composed of about 250 ethnic groups. Agriculture accounts for 45% of the GDP. The principal food crops are yams, cassava, and maize to the south, and millet, sorghum, and cowpeas in the drier north. Cocoa, rubber, oil palm, groundnuts, and cotton are the main cash crops and are generally destined for export. Importance of peanuts It is cultivated for kernels, the oil, and hay for livestock feed. Groundnut cake is often deep fried or dried to make a snack locally called kuli-kuli Groundnut flour is used as an ingredient in soups, sauces, sweets, confectioneries, and puddings. The husks are used as fuel, roughage, litter for livestock, mulch, manure, and as soil conditioners.

Federal Capital: Abuja Area: 923,768.64 Sq. kilometres Population: About 120 million (by estimation) Principal Rivers: Niger and Benue National Day: October 1 Remembrance Day: January 15
Currency: Naira = 100 Kobo Nigeria is one of the largest countries in Africa. It lies wholly within the tropics along the Gulf of Guinea, on the west coast of Africa. It is bounded on the west by the Republic of Benin, on the north by the Republic of Niger and on the east by the Republic of Cameroon and on the south by the Atlantic Ocean. A land of lush vibrant vegetation and rolling velds, its climate varies from tropical at the coast to sub-tropical further in land. Sandy beaches stretch along most of the country's 800 kilometre coast-line which is intersected by the great Niger Delta and by intricate network of creeks and rivers, The sandy beaches are backed by a belt of mangrove swamps, Beyond that, there is a zone of tropical forest, then the country becomes more open and park-like with some hilly ranges. Further inland it develops into a low-level plateau with hills of granite and sand-stone at a general elevation of 610 metres and rising to a central plateau along parts of the eastern frontier to 1,830 metres. The northern borders stretch out towards the Sahara desert, lying well outside the limits of the rain forest. The diversified geographical regions with the almost inexhaustible variety they provide, make Nigeria a highly interesting place.

The country attained its independence in 1960. Abuja is the official capital (since 1991), but many government offices remain in Lagos, the former capital and the largest city.
