Seminar in African Art and Culture Art, Architecture and Tradition; Building Identity in West Africa
Prof. Peter Mark
Department of Art History
Wesleyan Universit
Email: pmark@wesleyan.edu
Course Description:
This seminar investigates some of the diverse ways in which West African peoples have articulated their sense of who they are by means of the buildings they construct and the material culture they create. We will focus on architecture in historical perspective, and on the contemporary phenomenon of revitalized ritual and folklore. The course begins by asking fundamental questions about Art History. Is the discipline able to encompass broad issues of contemporary African culture and identity? Is African Art itself a meaningful concept? Or is it hopelessly bound to Western culture? At the same time, the introductory meetings offer a critical reevaluation of other analytical categories. If we retain the concept of "African art," contemporary culture forces us to redefine its boundaries to include such largely twentieth century phenomena as folkloric dance and the re-creation of self-consciously "traditional" religious rituals. And the African subjects of our study, too, must be redefined, insofar as the "ethnic group," viewed in historical perspective, ceases to exist as a fixed feature of the African cultural landscape. Ethnic identity is itself in constant change. What is ethnicity anyway, and how is ethnic identity related to culture?

A frican art - Ceremonial sculpture masks , and crafts produced by African tribal cultures , as well as by the African cultures of colonial and post-colonial periods. Generally African art means sub-Saharan art, with the cultures of Africa's northern parts typically referred to as Egyptian and North African. Making generalizations about the visual culture of any group of people is a crude endeavor, especially with a culture as diverse as Africa's. With this thought in mind, know that this survey, as any must be, is tremendously limited in its breadth and depth.

Overview of African Ethnic and Language Groups
Depending on how one defines the boundaries between one language or ethnic group and another, there are nearly 2,000 languages spoken in Africa, each the mother tongue of a distinct ethnic group. Note the terminology
Words like "tribe" and "dialect" can be pejorative if used incorrectly. People in Africa cannot be described as being members of "tribes" or speaking "dialects" any more than a European could be described as belonging to the French "tribe", or speaking the German "dialect". "Ethnic conflict" in the former Yugoslavia, "religious strife" in Northern Ireland and "tribal warfare" in Rwanda all mean the same thing: people of different ethnicities, languages, religions or beliefs killing each other for reasons no outsider can understand. Determining the correct name is the essential first step in research.

This newsgroup is not the place to learn about other cultures. However, there are MANY different newsgroups where you can learn about specific cultures and specific areas of the world. The best place to look is in the soc.* hierarchy, among all of the soc.culture.* newsgroups. In these newsgroups, you can ask about cities, languages, history, cultural traditions, and the like. In many cases, these newsgroups will have discussions in two or three different languages. The following is an *incomplete* list of the available soc.culture.* newsgroups. This is only a small portion. If you want to see if there is a newsgroup for a culture not listed here, please ask the people in ( news:news.groups.questions ) news.groups.questions for pointers to newsgroups and mailing lists about a specific culture.

Veit Erlman , Chair of Music History in the School of Music, University of Texas, Austin Musician, political critic, and hedonist, international superstar Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created a sensation throughout his career. In his own country of Nigeria he was simultaneously adulated and loathed, often by the same people at the same time. His outspoken political views and advocacy of marijuana smoking and sexual promiscuity offended many, even as his musical brilliance enthralled them. In his creation of afrobeat, he melded African traditions with African-American and Afro-Caribbean influences to revolutionize world music.

Note.—This bibliography is a sequel to "Bibliography of writings on Nigerian market literature," in Market literature from Nigeria : a checklist The various compilations of Bernth Lindfors’ Black African Literature in English , spanning most of the period covered by this listing, were invaluable for this project. Other standard bibliographies, including the African Studies Abstracts (Leiden), the International African Bibliography (London), and the Africa Bibliography (Manchester and Dover, NH), were also consulted. Bibliographic databases utilized included WorldCat, Dissertation Abstracts Online, the Africana Conference Paper Index, and the online catalog of the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University. The compiler wishes to acknowledge the valuable assistance of Joy Wrolson, Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of Theatre and Film, University of Kansas, in the compilation of this bibliography.

Cultural Comparisons through Literature
AFRICAN AUTOBIOGRAPHY: COMPARING CULTURAL EXPERIENCES Overview: Understanding beliefs, attitudes and lifestyles of people in African countries is sometimes clouded by preconceived notions perpetuated by television and movie stereotypes. These stereotypical images fail to inform the viewer that Africa is a continent made up of more than 55 countries with different cultural practices. As in the U.S., people live in cosmopolitan cities (Dakar, Cairo, Tunis, Abidjan, Lagos, Nairobi, Harare, etc.) and rather provincial villages. Using African autobiographical literature in the classroom is a means of redrawing the picture in the minds of students. This kind of literature not only assists in redrawing the images but gives first hand impressions of cultural practices. First hand experiences make the learning richer. The goal of this packet is to provide a place to start, simply that. To assist teachers in the process of providing worthwhile learning experiences for students I have included sample lesson plans. Included, also, is a list of additional autobiographical works for use in the classroom as well as additional resource material to assist in the process. SAMPLE LESSON PLAN Stock, Catherine.
