The Art of Ancient Mali Geography P resent-day Mali, at nearly twice the size of Texas, is the largest country in West Africa. Mali is bordered by seven other countries: Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Mauritania. Most of the northern half of Mali falls within the largest desert on the planet, the Sahara. The central section of Mali is made up of semi-arid land that is part of a larger region known as the Sahel. Sahel is an Arabic word meaning, “shore,” although, in this case, it can be thought of as the shore of the desert rather than the ocean. The Sahel is nearly 3,000 miles long and from 200 to 700 miles wide in a span across the continent of Africa. It is an area that is gradually being taken over by the southward creep of the Sahara Desert. In the southwestern region of Mali, rainfall and rivers are more plentiful and the climate is slightly more hospitable. Mali's most important geographic feature is the Niger River. The Niger River stretches over 2,500 miles through four countries: Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria. It arches up alongside the Sahara until it turns south towards the sea. Mali sits at the top of this arc, where the river spreads out and opens into an inland delta. Only about 2 percent of Mali is arable. In this dry climate, it is the Niger River that provides the main source of subsistence, providing fish, drinking water, and water for farming. Growing food in this region depends on the annual flooding of the Niger River, which has traditionally provided fertile plains along its banks.

Relief and Main Physical Features
Much of Nigeria's surface consists of ancient crystalline rocks of the African Shield. Having been subject to weathering and erosion for long periods, the characteristic landscape of this area is extensive level plains interrupted by occasional granite mountains. These features form a major landscape type of Nigeria and of West Africa as a whole. There are also smaller areas of younger granites found, for example, on the Jos Plateau. Sedimentary strata dating from various periods overlay the older rocks in many areas. The sedimentary areas typically consist of flat-topped ridges and dissected plateaus and a characteristic landscape of extensive plains and no major rocky outcrops. This landscape is generally true of the basins of the Niger and Benue rivers as well as the depressions of the Chad and Sokoto basins in the far northeast and northwest of the country, respectively. The most dramatic of the sedimentary landscapes are in southeastern Nigeria, where thick sedimentary beds from the Abakaliki Uplift to the Anambra Basin have been tilted and eroded. This process has resulted in a rugged scarp land topography with east-facing cliffs at in the Udi Hills, north of Enugu, and in the area around Nanka and Agulu. Although relatively little of the Nigerian landscape has been shaped by volcanic episodes, there are two main areas of volcanic rock. They are found on the Biu Plateau in the northeast, extending into some localized volcanic areas along the eastern border with Cameroon, and on the Jos Plateau in the northern center of the country.

The Niger crisis shows just how difficult it is to beat poverty across Africa
    By SIMON ROBINSON
ISSOUF SANOGO / AFP-GETTY IMAGES STILL HUNGRY: Aid saves lives but Niger needs more
    Special Report: Promises to Keep
    Sunday, Aug. 07, 2005
It didn't take long. The promise by the G-8 leaders meeting in Scotland early last month to "combat world poverty and save and improve human life" had barely been made when the images of starving Africans filled our television screens. In Niger some 2.5 million people face starvation, according to aid agencies and the United Nations World Food Program ( wfp ). Badly malnourished children are dying and thousands more are at risk. How can this be happening again?
The immediate reasons for the crisis in Niger are simple. The vast country, bigger than Britain, France and Germany combined, sits astride the southern edge of the Sahara in a belt of dry savanna known as the Sahel. In good years, farmers there grow enough food for their families plus a bit extra that they can sell or store away. But the past couple of years have been tough. Last year a swarm of locusts and poor rains ruined most of the crop, forcing the people of Niger to dig into their reserves. The next crops won't be ready until later this year. Until then, thousands of people will go hungry. "Whole families are suffering because of a desperate shortage of food, which has forced them to eat just one meal a day of maize, leaves or wild fruits,"

Fish trader, Bamako The Niger is one of the great rivers of Africa. It stretches over 2,500 miles in a long arc running from Guinea to Mali, right up to the edge of the Sahara, before turning south to the sea. Mali sits at the top of this arc, where the river opens into a massive, fertile, inland delta, where the water spreads out. The enormous length of the Niger means that journeys over land in Mali often involve a river crossing. In some areas, this event has become a part of tradition. For example, when their animals are brought back across the Niger from distant grazing lands, the Fulani people in Diafarabé celebrate with a
