Over 90 percent of the population of Niger lives in the southwest corner of the country near the fertile Niger River basin. Located on the edge of the Niger River is the capital of Niger, Niamey, a major trading center of West Africa with a long history. The Parc National du W in the extreme south of the country is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains diverse wildlife such as antelope, baboons, cheetahs, crocodiles, elephants, hyenas, leopards, lions, and a large number of bird species. < BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS The legitimate trade in commodities attracted a number of rough-hewn British merchants to the Niger River, as well as some men who had been formerly engaged in the slave trade but who now changed their line of wares. The large companies that subsequently opened depots in the delta cities and in Lagos were as ruthlessly competitive as the delta towns themselves and frequently used force to compel potential suppliers to agree to contracts and to meet their demands. The most important of these trading companies, whose activities had far-reaching consequences for Nigeria, was the United Africa Company, founded by George Goldie in 1879. In 1886 Goldie's consortium was chartered by the British government as the Royal Niger Company and granted broad concessionary powers in "all the territory of the basin of the Niger." Needless to say, these concessions emanated from Britain, not from any authority in Nigeria. The terms of the charter specified that trade should be free in the regiona principle systematically violated as the company strengthened its monopoly to forestall French and German trade interests. The company also was supposed to respect local customs "except so far as may be necessary in the interests of humanity." The qualifying clause was aimed at slavery and other activities categorized as "barbarous practices" by British authorities, and it foreshadowed the qualifications applied to noninterference as a guide to official policy when Britain assumed formal colonial responsibility in Nigeria.

    With a Desert to Cross
DIRKOU, Niger — On the windswept outskirts of this desert outpost, where the Sahara unfolds to the end of the horizon, a big truck came to a dusty stop the other day. A couple dozen African men swarmed around the truck, trading sharp words and elbows, as they jostled one another to reach the driver's side.
Four of them struck a deal. They scrambled to perch on the truck's roof. With their legs dangling before the windshield, the truck rumbled away into the Sahara, heading north on tracks in the sand, to Libya.
Of those left behind, literally in a cloud of dust, most had come from neighboring Nigeria. They wore wool hats and heavy jackets, carried blankets and water bottles — all necessary for a long journey into the Sahara, where nighttime temperatures drop to near-freezing this time of the year. They did not want to talk. They did not want to say the obvious — where they were going.
"No, nowhere," one said angrily. "I'm going nowhere."
So what were a bunch of Nigerians doing here in a foreign country, hundreds of miles from the nearest city and from their own border, standing in the middle of the world's greatest desert, waiting for a ride in Dirkou, on the edge of oblivion?

The Republic of Niger is a vast landlocked country on the southern edge of the Sahara, with a land area of 1,267,000 km : more than 5 times the UK, almost 2.5 times France and one-eighth the USA. It is bordered by Benin and Nigeria to the south, Chad to the east, Libya and Algeria to the north, and Mali and Burkina Faso to the west. It measures 1,500 km from Lake Chad in the east to Burkina in the west. The population of Niger is approximately 12 million, at an average density of 9.5 people per km , with an annual growth rate of 3%. However, due to lack of rainfall the northern three-quarters of the country is largely unsuitable for agriculture. As a result some 85% of the population live in the southern fifth of the country, a narrow band 100 - 150 km wide bordering Nigeria, Benin and Burkina Faso. Here the average population density is about 41 people per km
