African weddings are a family affair and involve the combining of two lives, two families, and sometimes even two communities! There are many different wedding traditions in the African continent and no two are exactly alike. However, in all the communities the bride plays a very special role and is treated with respect because she is a link between the unborn and the ancestors. A bride might eventually bear a very powerful child, so she is treated with respect. In some areas of East Africa the grooms family would even move to the brides village and set up a whole new house there.
There are many steps that take place before marriage starting at a very young age where training takes place in how to be a suitable partner. Girls will many times go to circumcision schools where women teach them what is involved in marriage, and in some ethnic groups even learn secret codes and languages so that they can communicate with other married women. In the Wolof tribe there is even a time where the elders of the village gather with the bride and give advice and gifts.
Weddings can be very elaborate, involving feasting and dancing for days within a community, they can be very simple, or they can even be performed in huge marriage ceremonies involving many different couples.

The decline of Mali was rapid, although the kings continued to rule until 1645. Its place was taken by the Songhoi Empire of Gao, whose great kings were Sunni Ali from 1464 to 1492, and Askia Muhammad, from 1493 to 1528. At its greatest extent, Songhoi reached from the Atlantic to Kano and included most modern Mali and parts of Guinea. Most of the empire was destroyed by Moroccan invasion in 1591. 1) FESTIVAL OF THE DESERT , from 9 jan-2006 to 16 jan-2006

The city is composed of old buildings of colonial style (neo-classic and neo-Sudanese) built between 1890 and 1914. It is the nation's administrative center. Bamako University includes schools of administration, medicine, and engineering. Most of all, Bamako is a large market where people come to trade, establish business ties, meet friends and family, or just stroll. It is a cacophony of music, traffic and crowds of people buying and selling under the hot midday sun. Siby Located 50km south west of Bamako in the Manding Mountains, Siby is the site of the historic founding of the ancient empire of Mali. The epic poem "Sundiata" chronicles the life of Sundiata Keita (ca. 1210-1260), the son of the king who defeated the Ghanaian king Sumanguru and founded the empire of Mali. It is close to Kangaba, another very important site in the history of the Malian Empire. High cliffs with beautiful rock formations and vigorous waterfalls make this an appropriate and relaxing place to begin the program. Segou Segou was the capital of the eighteenth-century Bamana Empire, whose influence stretched from the Senegal River to Timbuktu. The French took the city in 1892, using it as an administrative center. The Niger River is wide and beautiful at Segou. Though traditional Bamana architecture can be found throughout town, the oldest remains can be found in Segou-Koro (old Segou) five miles west of the modern city. The Segou region is home to many artisan's potters, weavers, blacksmiths, and wood workers.

The traditional lifestyle of the Touareg and Fulani is nomadic. This way of life is being threatened by the expansion of the desert and political pressures. The end of French colonial rule of Niger in 1960 brought less, rather than more, independence for these groups. Artificially-created borders boxed in these wide-spread nomadic peoples and kept them from moving freely and accessing crucial water holes.
The Fulani held at least seven kingdoms in West Africa between the 10th and 18th centuries and they have spread throughout many West African countries. The peoples known most cpmmonly as "Fulani" are referred to by a nomber of names. Fulani is a Hausa term; others include:

We can agree, without being facetious, that we have found all the "tribes." The important question today is how to transcend theoretical paradigms that conceptualize African cultures mainly in terms of tribal (ethnic, societal, ancestral, etc.; insert your word of choice here) identification. Given the increasing awareness that ethnic identities are relatively recent formations indebted to Africa's colonial history in the past century and a half, new paradigms that provide a better assessment of African cultural practice are needed. Is there such a thing as a stereotypical mosque? Are all mosques necessarily characterized by a minaret, a dome, and arches? Are all mosques decorated with mosaics or stucco? From North Africa to India, these elements are the defining features of mosque architecture. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Islam reached these lands largely by conquest, and this meant that the know-how of mosque building was wholly imported. In the case of Sub-Saharan Africa as well as China and Southeast Asia, the entry of Islam was more gradual and was transmitted by merchants and traders. I would argue that this partly explains why the mosque architecture of these regions conforms less explicitly to the norms of what has become the blueprint of the mosque. According to Alsayyad, the Arab conquest of the Middle East was motivated by three aims that conform to the notion of colonialism: a divine mission of spreading the Islamic religion; the ruling Arab elite maintaining political power while expanding trade; and finally, gaining profit from the resources of conquered lands. However, Arab conquest did not always encounter confrontation; on the contrary, as in the case of Damascus and Sicily for instance, Arab dominion was preferable to Byzantine exploitation.

Eno Anwana has worked in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria since 2002. The article is collected from Pambazuka News, www.pambazuka.org
From the slave trade era of the 15th century to the crude oil era of the20th century, Nigeria's natural resource history has been fraught by a systemic cartel of merchants whose primary agenda was in the amount of natural resources they could garner from the country. In their exploitative ventures they raided whole communities, introduced internecine wars and conflicts, and ignited a raging fire of habitat degradation and fragmentation. Historical records tell of the fact that the plundering of African natural resources fuelled the industrial revolution of Europe. Energy demands in the 20th century brought on the search for crude oil wells worldwide and Nigeria was not left out. From 1956, when the first oil well was successfully drilled in Nigeria, scrambling for Nigeria's resources by the Europeans took on a new dimension. The oil boom era of the 1970s saw the downward plunge of the agricultural sector. There was a complete paradigm shift from the nation's then agrarian culture to an oil driven culture, moving ultimately from renewable natural resources to un-renewable resource trade. From the 70s through to the early 80s we witnessed a drastic drop in local food production. Importation rates of foods and finished products increased dramatically and our foreign debt escalated rapidly, bringing the economy to a crisis. During this period, from 1958 to 1983, we recorded $101 billion in estimated oil revenue earnings.

Oumou Sy's Collection Misanet.com / IPS, 18 November - The government of Niger has banned Islamic groups which participated in violent demonstrations against the country's Second International Festival of African Fashion (FIMA). Security was tight at FIMA, which took place Nov. 9 through 12 along the banks of the Niger River at La Pilule, some 15 kilometres from the capital Niamey. Before its official opening, leaders from several Islamic organisations held anti-FIMA meetings in mosques and delivered sermons which blasted it as a threat to Islam's social and cultural values. On Nov. 8, some Muslim activists marched on the National Assembly to voice their opposition to FIMA. Security forces intervened and dispersed the crowd with tear gas. During the melee, some activists ransacked betting office kiosks, bars, and anything else they considered to be ''in the service of the devil''. In some Niamey neighbourhoods, anti-FIMA militants attacked prostitutes and girls in miniskirts.

Groups claiming indigenous status include the Tuareg, Bororo, Wodaabe, Tubu (Teda and Daza) and Mbororo. The Bororo, Wodaabe and Mbororo are all part of the larger Peul / Fulani language and culture group in West Africa. They are the groups who most adhere to their traditional nomadic culture and identity. The claim for collective rights as indigenous peoples arises from the marginalisation of Saharan nomads, first under colonialism and then later by independent states, all of which are dominated by sedentary agricultural peoples living in the South. Other extremely vulnerable groups include the Bassari hunters of Senegal and the Nemadi hunters of Mauritania. Today, there are still unresolved tensions in the region. There has been symbolic representation of nomads in the political systems of several countries, but there has been no serious effort to address the issue of creating substantive democracy that meets the needs of nomads and sedentary peoples, and the ongoing economic marginalisation of the north.
