Over 90 percent of the population of Niger lives in the southwest corner of the country near the fertile Niger River basin. Located on the edge of the Niger River is the capital of Niger, Niamey, a major trading center of West Africa with a long history. The Parc National du W in the extreme south of the country is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains diverse wildlife such as antelope, baboons, cheetahs, crocodiles, elephants, hyenas, leopards, lions, and a large number of bird species. [edit this] [Upload image] Niger is a landlocked country in the heart of Africa, at the south end of the Sahara. It borders on Chad Nigeria Algeria Burkina Faso ... Benin and Mali . Most people of Niger are muslims, although there are quite some differences in their practice depending on the region where they are from. People of Arab descent tend to be a bit stricter than the Haussa from the south. However, these differences seem to be slowly disappearing. Niger was one of the last places in Africa to fall under colonial rule and in the case of Niger, it were the French that left their mark on the country and its inhabitants. French is still widely spoken and if you don't speak Haussa, Pulaar or any of the other languages spoken in Niger, you will probably (have to) get by with your French. The capital city of Niamey is a nice and easy going town with colourful markets. More importantly, Niger has stunning natural beauty, especially in the Mountain ranges in the north of the country, but also houses a few old trading centers in the Sahara, such as

Some 40% of children are underfed, and one out of four dies before turning five. And that’s when things are normal. Throw in a plague of locusts, and a familiar spectacle emerges: skeletal babies, distended bellies, people too famished to brush the flies from their faces. To the aid workers charged with saving the dying, the immediate challenge is to raise relief money and get supplies to the stricken areas. They leave it to the economists and politicians to come up with a lasting remedy. One such economist is James Shikwati who blames foreign aid. “When aid money keeps coming, all our policy-makers do is strategise on how to get more,” said the Kenya-based director of the Inter Region Economic Network think tank.

Comments Africa is a truly fucked up place. The West, alas, has little inkling of what goes on there. At the core of much of Africa's troubles is tribal strife. This goes back millenia, and it's just a fierce today as it was 1200 years ago. As an African friend explained it to me, the top priority for most Africans is getting enough food for todayeating tomorrow is of no consideration whatever. Just enough food for today. Once that's taken care of, the next priority is how to wipe out the tribe next door. If you look at African politics, what you find is tribe-against-tribe arrangements. In most cases, one tribe holds all the levers of power, and uses those to deny anything above economic subsistence to those outside the tribe. This, of course, drives the entire economy down the shitter and keeps almost everyone desperately poor. But that is of no consequence when the economy can be used to oppress the hated [fill in tribe name here].
