Experience Solar Culture In Nicaragua An opportunity to offer your hands, heart, and a unique gift: Electricity! One doesn't often think twice about turning on the light switch. But for more than 60% of Nicaragua's rural population, this is not even possible: they have no electricity. For many, the cost of purchasing an electrical lighting system is way beyond their means. A farm laborer fortunate enough to have work all month in a country with massive unemployment makes about $40. His family in the countryside either goes without the luxury of light, or spends $8-$12 per month on candles and kerosene. Alternatively, some communities have managed to obtain noisy diesel generators that are silenced when they run out of expensive scarce fuel, while others use old car batteries, requiring money to recharge before they fail within months. http://www.grupofenix-solar.org

GoNOMAD DESTINATION MINI GUIDE
Nicaragua

By John S. Mitchell
WHERE Nicaragua is located in Central America between both the Caribbean and the Pacific Oceans. WHY GO Little-visited Nicaragua is a haven for independent travelers. This surprisingly diverse nation - the largest in Central America - harbors fine colonial cities, picturesque mountain towns, bustling handicrafts markets, smoking volcanoes, vast lakes, and miles of uncrowded beaches. There are also budding ecotourism destinations such as Isla de Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua and the , which offer hiking, bird-watching, and ancient petroglyph sites. Despite its violent past, Nicaragua is one of the most welcoming countries in Central America.

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Nicaragua is best known not for its stunning landscapes or vast cultural treasures, but for a war in which a popular uprising was suppressed by a US-backed government. The after-effects of these and other setbacks have left the country in a state of shock from which it is gradually emerging. Criminality in the North/The Corn Islands Since the end of the civil war, armed criminal groups have operated out of the remote sectors of the northern and central regions including the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN), particularly Bonanza and Siuna and especially along the Honduran border. Travellers should avoid all but essential travel and, while there, exercise caution, taking care to travel on major highways during daylight hours only. Travel to the Corn Islands is not recommended as violent, armed robbery is becoming increasingly commonplace. If staying on Big Corn Island ensure that your accommodation is secure. Be aware that there are no police on Little Corn and any incidents will need to be reported on Big Corn Island.

about the School.
Spanish Language School in Granada is an innovative educational and cultural center offering Spanish language classes, volunteer social service opportunities, and special programs to introduce you to the Nicaraguan people, their history, culture and natural environment.
Rising above the shores of Lake Nicaragua (the tenth largest lake in the world) Granada is one of the oldest Spanish colonial cities in the New World. A lively commercial and cultural center, Granada was frequently raided in its early years by Caribbean pirates. The cool lake breezes, lovely colonial style architecture, and vistas of the towering Mombacho volcano make strolling through Granada a scenic delight. Located one hour south of Managua, Nicaragua's capital city, Granada provides access to many of the cultural and natural wonders of the country.
