Nicaragua - Culture: El Nino Poeta
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Do you know what a poem is? It is a style of writing. This style uses words that make up a rhythm. Some poems rhyme, some don't. Do you hear or read poems? You probably do. Think about the music you listen to. A lot of music uses poems. Singers sing poems in songs. So you probably know many poems! Can you write a poem? Some people are very good at writing poems. In Nicaragua, there was a young man who was very good at writing poems. His name was Ruben Dario.
Dario was a poet at a very young age. In fact, he is known as "El Nino Poeta," which is Spanish for "The Child Poet." His life and writing would change poetry all across Central and South America.
Dario was born in Metapa, Nicaragua on January 18, 1867. When he was born, he was named Felix Ruben Garcia Sarmiento. That's a lot to say, isn't it? Felix instead took the old family name of Dario. Soon after he was born, his parents were divorced. His grandfather adopted him.

Granada - Culture Granada port on Lake Nicaragua, is an important commercial center in Nicaragua. From Granada , merchants ship sugar, coffee, cacao, alcohol, hides, cotton, and indigo to the Pacific Coast. Located less than an hour by car from Managua, and just over one hour from the Costa Rica border, Granada is one of the most beautiful cities in Central America. Countless historical buildings share the city's cobblestone streets with elegant homes and tranquil parks, and that urban elegance is complemented by nearby natural attractions. The route across the lake and down the San Juan River connects Granada with the Atlantic Ocean, which led the city to become one of the region's most important ports. Products from a large part of Central America were shipped to Spain via Granada, and likewise, shipments of Spanish goods were unloaded there for transport to other Central American cities. Granada is a wonderful city to explore on foot, though because of the torrid climate, it's best to do most of your strolling in the early morning and late afternoon. Managua - Culture Managua, the largest city in the country, is also its centre of commerce and culture. It produces a variety of small manufactures, including processed meat, furniture, metal, and textiles; it also has an oil refinery. Coffee and cotton are the principal crops grown in the agricultural hinterland. The city has railroad and highway connections with the Pacific port of Corinto and with the cities of Leon and Granada. The Pan-American Highway and an international airport tie it to other Central and North American cities. The city is surrounded by rich agricultural lands devoted primarily to the cultivation of coffee, cotton, and corn (maize). The importance of sugarcane, rice, sorghum, cattle, and horses is decreasing. Pop. (1985 est.) city, 682,111.
    ATTRACTIONS
City Tour: Even though the 1972 earthquake destroyed most of the downtown area, the remaining old Cathedral, the Ruben Dario Theater and the recently restored National Palace offers a different yet interesting tour to the past. All these with the Lake of Managua as the background. The new city is sprawling with businesses, banks, fountains and new roads. The main Universities are here, as well as the Central Government and the financial center. Archaeology: The "Acahualinca Footprints" show footprints of man and animals fleeing from a volcanic eruption some time around 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.

    THE EMBEDDED CULTURE OF MACHISMO

by Alex Marshall Matasana Diary The mother had carried her sick baby for two hours over steep, rutted roads. Now she could only stand by as the doctor sounded the child’s chest. Pneumonia, said the doctor at last. There was nothing to be done, unless she could get the baby into hospital straight away. The health team found space for mother and child in their four-wheel drive. By evening, after a bumpy ride to the provincial capital and an anxious hour waiting for a bed, Rosa Alba del Socorro, six months, was in intensive care. Her mother, Gregoria, waited outside, alone. She was just 17, and this was her second time in the city. She was lucky. Health care can be a hit or miss affair in the isolated hamlets of north-eastern Nicaragua, where armed bands still roam and transport is infrequent and uncertain: but this community is close enough to Matagalpa, the provincial capital, to have a regular visit from a health team.

Two Cities of Nicaragua by Steven Allan For much of the 19th century, two conflicting political groups contested for power in Nicaragua: the liberals, based in the northwestern city of León, and the conservatives, based in Granada to the south. The country's capital rotated between the two cities, shifting with changes in power, whether by elections or by war. León and Granada might be at opposing political extremes, but they are matching twins in their architecture. Spanish colonial mansions, cathedrals, churches, and houses adorn the streets of both cities. This colonial architecture followed the historical progression of styles established in Spain, but it adopted indigenous elements in the Western Hemisphere. The main Spanish colonial centers were in Peru and Mexico, but the Spanish style occurred throughout the region. It flourished until the last quarter of the 18th century, when neoclassicism gained preeminence in Latin America. Key elements of Spanish colonial architecture include asymmetrical building shape, spiral columns and pilasters, porch entries, arches over doors, wrought-iron grillwork, Renaissance motifs, ornately carved stone or wood details, courtyards, heavy-tiled roofs, and plain stucco or plaster finishes.
