Only the Indians of the eastern half of the country remain ethnically distinct and retain tribal customs and languages. A large black minority, of Jamaican origin, is concentrated on the Caribbean coast. In the mid-1980s, the central government divided the eastern half of the countrythe former department of Zelayainto two autonomous regions and granted the people of the region limited self-rule. ... Culture of Nicaragua
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Nicaraguan culture has several distinct strands. The west of the country was colonized by Spain and has a similar culture to other Spanish -speaking Latin American countries. The people of western Nicaragua are mostly mestizos , and Spanish is invariably their first language. The eastern half of the country, on the other hand, was once a British protectorate English is still the first language of most people in this region, and its culture is more similar to Caribbean nations. There is a large population of people of African descent, as well as a smaller Garifuna population. Of the cultures that were present before European colonization , the Nahuatl -speaking peoples who populated the west of the country have essentially been assimilated into the latino culture. In the east, however, several indigenous groups have maintained a distinct identity. The Sumos and Ramas people still use their original languages. edit

... To Request our Free Program DVD Parents believe in our mission- language through community, culture and leadership Sincerely, Kate McMahan Sincerely, Tim Weiss and Jill Heikenen Our son Jesse attended the Nicaragua community program this past summer. Jesse said the trip made a lasting impression on him and we feel the same. He told us the entire experience changed him forever. he stated that he feels fortunate to be living in the United States because of the hardships that many of the Nicaraguan people must face daily. The entire program was well-chaperoned and well thought out. In the weeks that he was there he learned and experienced more than could be provided in a classroom setting in high school. We were amazed at the great variety of classes, cultural events, youth service, and excursions! He enjoyed the Nicaragua culture, living with a Spanish speaking host family and experiencing the country's food, drink, music and arts. We highly recommend this trip. It was a thoroughly enjoyable learning experience for Jesse and we are grateful to Ilba for the hard work to make it all possible. Sincerely, Sandy and Tom Poppe

    cultural diversity

Behind the Mask, a photo exhibit featuring the profile and spirit of the Nicaraguan people, was created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of one of Wisconsin's best kept secrets: the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc. W/NP assembled the rich and diverse cross-cultural collection of images to give you and your community a glimpse into the life of the people of Nicaragua and to help Wisconsin citizens learn about Nicaragua, Wisconsin's partner country.
    The Photographs
The images in the exhibit were captured by photographer Wade Britzius of Galesville, Wisconsin, long-time member of the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc. Wade was in Nicaragua for three weeks, supported by a travel grant through the Partners of the Americas, Inc. and the U.S. Information Agency.
The goal of the trip was to see the various regions of the country and to photograph a wide variety of life as it presented itself in the whirlwind tour. Staying in the homes of people while traveling from the Pacific coast to the eastern seaboard provided unique opportunities not afforded usual tourist travelers. These homestays offered a variety of situations and people, creating exciting opportunities for documentary photography.
The focus of this experience was to capture the pulse of everyday life and help promote the mission of Partners. The four themes of the exhibit, "The Spirit of a People," "Faces of Nicaragua," "Through Work, Dignity," and "Our Country, Land, Place," underscore the dignity of day to day living under very different cultural and economic realities. The photographs convey information about the Nicaragua culture in a uniquely convincing and emotionally involving way.

Pre-colonial Nicaragua was occupied by two distinct ethnic groups. The central and western regions were populated by tribes related to the Aztecs and Maya, who had migrated southwards from Mexico. In the opposite direction, probably from Colombia, came a different group, who occupied the Caribbean lowlands. The arrival of Spanish colonists in the early 1500s brought the demise of most of the western and central populations through imported disease and forced labor. The eastern peoples survived due to a relative lack of interest from Spain and, later on, support from the British, who were challenging Spanish influence in the Caribbean.

    WHO ARE WE?
"Amigos de Nicaragua" means "Friends of Nicaragua" in Spanish. We are the official RPCV group for former Peace Corps Volunteers who served in Nicaragua. We are currently composed of well over 140 members who live all over the United States and elsewhere, and are bound together by the following:
    • A sense of shared experience in the two years or more we each spent working in Nicaragua A love for Nicaragua: its people, its beautiful landscapes, and its culture The desire to remain aware of what's happening in Nicaragua, discuss current events, and stay in touch with current events: political, social, and cultural. The desire to continue contributing to the advancement of Nicaragua's economic development, as always, through the grass-roots type of activities that we practiced as Peace Corps Volunteers . Typically we contribute to projects run by Peace Corps volunteers, and band together to make ourselves useful in times of need, such as after Hurricane Mitch (October 1998).
We are an affiliate organization of the NPCA (National Peace Corps Association). There are many other RPCV groups , organized by geographic region of Peace Corps service (Uganda, Micronesia, etc.), and geographic location in the United States (Long Island, South Florida, etc.) We are a not-for-profit group; all membership fees are used to support grass-roots projects in Nicaragua. The after-effects of these and other setbacks have left the country in a state of shock from which it is gradually emerging. Criminality in the North/The Corn Islands Since the end of the civil war, armed criminal groups have operated out of the remote sectors of the northern and central regions including the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN), particularly Bonanza and Siuna and especially along the Honduran border. Travellers should avoid all but essential travel and, while there, exercise caution, taking care to travel on major highways during daylight hours only. Travel to the Corn Islands is not recommended as violent, armed robbery is becoming increasingly commonplace. If staying on Big Corn Island ensure that your accommodation is secure.
