MudLake.Com's Native American History Page
Native American history is a rich and varied history. Each tribe has its own history, with its own version of how the tribe and the world came about. In the west, most tribes lived near the mountains for summer hunting trips, and in valleys or on plains during the winter to avoid the deep snows and bitter cold in the mountains. Most of the history of native americans that the ordinary person knows about is from the movies, and literature. The rich culture that these tribes had is not as well known as the stereotypical native from movies. Buffalo Bill Cody became a friend to many native americans, mostly from the plains tribe, which has caused most people to think of the palins tribes as your typical native.

Treaty Rights and the Tradition of Tribal Management When the four tribes (Yakama, Umatilla, Warm Springs, and Nez Perce) signed the 1855 treaty with the federal government, they reserved their fishing rights at their usual and accustomed places. In 1944, just less than a century and a half later, the tribes, in conjunction with the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission , developed salmon restoration plan, Wy-Kan-Ush-Mi-Wa-Kish-Wit ("Spirit of the Salmon"). This plan proposes to use the treaty fishing rights of the four tribes to benefit the salmon now and in the future. The plan also provides a framework for restoring anadromous fish stocks (specifically salmon, Pacific lamprey, and white sturgeon) in the upriver areas above Bonneville Dam.

Native Name: In-mut-too-yah-lat-lat ('Thunder coming up over the land from the water') Chief Joseph was the leader of the Nez Perce tribe, whose lands were in what is now Oregon and Washington in the western United States. In 1877 he led his tribe in a 1400-mile retreat from U.S. troops in 1877, which ended in the Battle of Bear Paw Mountains in Montana. Joseph is now especially remembered for the statement he made then: "From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." Chief Joseph is often said to have died of a broken heart after spending the last two decades of his life on reservations. FOUR GOOD LINKS

Surrender Speech by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohulhulsote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led the young men is dead.
It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they areperhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead.
Hear me, my chiefs. I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.

Theme Unit Social Studies Lesson
Author: Marc Sheehan
Title: The Nez Perce War (Direct Instruction)
Content Area: Social Studies, Study Skills
Grade:
Concepts Addressed:
History, Note-Taking
Objectives: The students will be able to list three causes of the Nez Perce War. The students will be able to identify three major figures from the war. The students will also be able to describe the events that occurred at Big Hole, Montana and Snake Creek, Montana. Also, the students will be able to list three things that happened as a result of the Nez Perce War. Finally, the students will have an opportunity to practice note-taking skills.
Materials: Two books: "The Nez Perce," "The Indian Book," paper, pencils, overhead projector, overhead pens, maps of the geographic area (Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Canada) provided by the Nez Perce book (paper and overhead copies)
Time: 50 minutes for lesson, 40 minutes for quiz in two weeks. Total: 90 minutes.
Introduction: I will open this lesson by reading the famous speech spoken by Chief Joseph: (Nez Perce war leader) "I Will Fight No More Forever." He gave it after the surrender of the Nez Perce to the U.S. Army. (The class will not be told who gave this speech.) I will ask the class if they knew who gave this speech and why. After fielding their guesses, I will reveal the answer: Chief Joseph gave this speech when he surrendered to the Army, thus ending the Nez Perce War.
Procedure: This will be a direct instruction lesson. I will have the students take out a sheet of paper and a pencil. I will them that they will be taking notes on what I am about to teach them. I will model the format on the overhead for them; all they will have to do is follow my lead. (I will give a good example and a bad example before we begin.) They will be told that they will have a quiz on the information in two weeks, and they will use the notes to study for that quiz. They will have to know three causes of the Nez Perce War, three effects of the war, three people involved in the war, and two battle sites of the war. I will tell them (and also write down) all the information they need to know. I will go slowly so that the students can follow along ("Here are the causes: The first one was....")

Also called the Sahaptin, or Shahaptin, they were given the name "Nez PercE" by the French because some of them wore nose pendants; however, this custom does not seem to have been widespread among them. They were typical of the Plateau area, fishing for salmon and gathering camas, cowish, and other roots. After the introduction of the horse (c.1700) they became noted horse breeders, particularly of the Appaloosa , and they adopted many Plains area traits, including buffalo hunts. In 1805, when visited by Lewis and Clark, they were occupying a large region in W Idaho, NE Oregon, and SE Washington. In the 1830s the Nez PercE, then numbering some 6,000, attracted national attention by sending emissaries to St. Louis to ask for books and teachers. Their request attracted to the Pacific Northwest missionaries, who played an important role in opening the region to settlement. The Nez PercE ceded (1855) a large part of their territory to the United States. The gold rushes in the 1860s and 1870s, however, brought large numbers of miners and settlers onto their lands, and a treaty of cession was fraudulently extracted (1863) from part of the tribe, confining the Nez PercE to a reservation in NW Idaho. A band of the tribe living in Oregon refused to relocate, leading to the uprising under Chief

[Home Page] [History Library ] Disrupting the Natives
White emigrants of the overland trail era are often credited with disrupting Native American societies, causing sweeping changes in in their cultures, and precipitating wars. This is not entirely untrue, but the Oregon Trail was merely one chapter in a much longer history. The larger truth is that native lifestyles were disrupted by other Indians and by the arrival of Spanish horses well before the United States came into existence, wars and irreversible cultural changes were caused by government policies older than the Oregon Trail, and most contact between emigrants and Indians on the overland trails was peaceful.
Plains Indians were in a constant battle over homelands as migrating tribes shoved aside previous occupants, and the policies of the US government served only to further complicate this situation. In 1824, the Bureau of Indian Affairs was established not as an independent federal agency, but as a part of the War Department. During the Jackson presidency, a policy of Indian removal was implemented and the "five civilized tribes" of the northeast were forcibly relocated to the plains. As missionaries were moving to Oregon, the Cherokee Nation was following their Trail of Tears to Indian Territory.
Into this uncertainty came the covered wagons headed for Oregon and California. The emigrants distrusted and misunderstood the Indians, seeking revenge for any transgression, no matter how petty. Some emigrants actually shot at Indians for target practice, and guns always came out when Indians stopped by a pioneer encampment to trade. Minor skirmishes were labeled massacres in the press, and the number of dead grew with each retelling of the story at forts and trading posts across the West.
