From the meeting of the Lewis and Clark party in 1805 to the death of Chief Joseph in 1904, the story of the Nez Perce Indians is epic drama. No setting could be more spectacular than the rugged, beautiful homeland of this tribe. The drama intensified as the Nez Perce offered friendship to the white newcomers. Their friendship ended in the tragically bitter Nez Perce War. 9x12, 231 illustrations, 27 maps, 316 pages, bibliography, index, hardcover, boxed.

Students will understand the following: Chief Joseph was well educated and articulate in English. Materials For this lesson, you will need: Access to additional reference materials about Chief Joseph Procedures Tell students that you are going to devote a class period to reading the piece of Native American literature included below and analyzing it in a class discussion. Begin by explaining that the piece you will read is from the 19th century but that, unlike so much Native American literature that began orally and later was written down, this piece originated as a written document. Go on to say that the piece was published in a magazine for a white audience in 1879, two years after the writer had surrendered to the U.S. government; that the piece was written by the Nez Perce leader Chief Joseph, whose father had been converted to Christianity by a missionary; and that the son was educated in a mission school.

Memorandum tries to strengthen university

By Leah Andrews
The memorandum is a non-binding agreement, which expresses the shared goals of both the university and tribes to strengthen relations and to improve education opportunities for Native American students.
According to Hal Godwin, UI vice president for Student Affairs, in the year since signatures were first collected the process toward fulfilling the goals of the memorandum has centered mainly on dialogue and assessment of current programs and services.
"I think that we have, first, heightened awareness of the university’s desire to be involved with the tribes and we are on our way to inventorying the number and kinds of services we have with the tribes," Godwin said.

Less widely known is the fact that many Native Americans also owned African slaves, and fathered children with African slave women. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/2165/wisdom.htm
O'siyo, welcome! On this page you will find statements of cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes from a number of Native Americans who lived and experienced traditional tribal life in the years between the Civil War and 1930.
The American Indian is of the soil, whether it be the region of the forests, plains, pueblos, or mesas. He fits into the landscape, for the land that fashioned the continent also fashioned the man for his surroundings. He once grew as naturally as the wild sunflowers; he belongs just as the buffalo belongs... Luther Standing Bear (1868?-1939) Oglala Sioux chief I hope the Great Heavenly Father, who will look down upon us, will give all the tribes His blessing, that we may go forth in peace, and live in peace all our days, and that He will look down upon our children and finally lift us far above the earth; and that our Heavenly Father will look upon our children as His children, that all the tribes may be His children, and as we shake hands to-day upon this broad plain, we may forever live in peace. Red Cloud [Marpiya-Luta] (late 19th century) Oglala Sioux chief ...everything on the earth has a purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission. This is the Indian theory of existence.

    35. Native Americans
As a tribe, the nez perce had been on good terms with white Europeans of American equality and justice would one day extend to native peoples as well.
    http://www.thewildwest.org/native_american/faces/Joseph.html
    Chief Joseph / Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt
He ultimately became famous as "Chief Joseph," but the man born in the Wallowa Valley in what is now northeastern Oregon was also called Joseph and Joseph the Younger, as his father had been baptized with that Christian name before Chief Joseph was born. However, at the time of his birth in 1840, the Nez Pierce (nay pehr-SAY) called Chief Joseph, Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt, which translates as "thunder coming up over the land from the water" or "thunder coming down the mountain." As a tribe, the Nez Perce had been on good terms with white Europeans after Lewis and Clark opened their lands in Idaho and Washington to exploration. Chief Joseph's father, Old Joseph, signed an 1855 treaty that guaranteed the Nez Perce the rights to their homelands, and, as Old Joseph also converted to Christianity, Chief Joseph attended school in a Christian mission. But after a gold rush that identified Nez Perce lands as prime mining territory, the white government created a second treaty in 1863 that took most of the traditional lands away from the Nez Perce, including their beloved Wallowa Valley. The tribe was left with a tenth of what had originally been promised them, all in Idaho. Old Joseph always insisted his people never agreed to any conditions of this treaty and turned away from cooperation with whites, refusing to acknowledge and sign the treaty, burning his American flag and Bible and refusing to move his people. Upon his father's death, Chief Joseph took his place as chief and his own strong feelings about the validity of the second treaty would shape his life and change the interaction between the Nez Perce and whites forever. He became highly resistant to government attempts to corral his people onto a reservation even as white settlers streamed into the territory.

NEZ PERCE I believe much trouble and blood would be saved if we opened our hearts more. I will tell you in my way how the Indian sees things. The white man has more words to tell you how they look to him, but it does not require many words to speak the truth.
    - Chief Joseph, Nez Perce We do not want churches because they will teach us to quarrel about God...
    - Chief Joseph, Nez Perce I have carried a heavy load on my back ever since I was a boy. I realized then that we could not hold our own with the white men. We were like deer. They were like grizzly bears. We had a small country. Their country was large. We were contented to let things remain as the Great Spirit Chief made them. They were not, and would change the rivers and mountains if they did not suit them.

Exploring Native Americans Across the Curriculum
Blast stereotypes with across-the-curriculum activities for students of all ages. Stereotypes of Native Americans abound in movies and on TV, in literature and in history books. "Teachers must provide accurate instruction not only about history but also about the contemporary lives of Native Americans," writes Debbie Reese in Teaching Young Children About Native Americans , a 1996 ERIC Digest. Reese is a Pueblo Indian who studies and works in the field of early childhood education. Stereotype is a difficult issue to define in any culture, especially in the Native American culture. As noted in A Line in the Sand , a Web site dedicated to the debate surrounding Native American stereotypes and other issues: "We want to be careful to note that this 'line in the sand' will not lie at the same place for everyone. ...We must recognize that not all Native American communities have had the same historical experience, either before or after 1492. For this reason, the members of these communities will have different opinions. There will be different opinions both between and within communities, just as there are in all human communities."
