    Argentia Geography
    Where we are
Argentia, a part of the historic Town of Placentia, is located on a small peninsula on the east side of Placentia Bay, in the southwest corner of the Avalon Peninsula on the Island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Situated 45 kilometres from Route 1, the Trans Canada Highway, and 131 kilometres from the provincial capital of St. John's, Argentia is easily accessible. Serving as the gateway to Eastern Newfoundland, Argentia can also be accessed via the Marine Atlantic Ferry Service, which travels 280 nautical miles from North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Argentia Harbour throughout the summer months. Argentia experiences a temperate maritime climate with mild winters and summers that are often cool, especially with winds blowing off the ocean. In addition, as with typical Newfoundland weather, fog is very common. The normal annual rainfall is approximately 1200 mm and the normal annual snowfall is approximately 170 mm. This is a large bibliographic database which indexes books, journal articles, theses and book reviews. Each entry contains helpful abstract of the contents of the publication. "America" in the title means North America, hence it provides a good coverage for social, political, economic and geographical literature on Canada. Arts and cultural matters are also covered, though less well. Although it is primarily designed for historians, it is useful for other disciplines as well.

GEOGRAPHY: Newfoundland and Labrador is the most easterly Canadian province. It consists of the Island of Newfoundland and the mainland plateau region of Labrador which borders the province of Québec. The province stretches approximately 1700km (1063 miles) north to south, and has approximately 17,000km (10,625 miles) of coastline, much of it rugged and heavily indented with bays and fjords. The interior of Newfoundland is a combination of forest, heath, lakes and rivers spread over a terrain that ranges from mountainous in the west to rolling hills in the centre and east. Labrador is also mountainous in the west, although its rivers are larger and wilder.
Language: Although Canada is officially bilingual (English and French), 95 per cent of this province speaks English as a first language.

    Introduction [top]
This in-process cartobibliography lists and describes printed and manuscript maps of Newfoundland and Labrador in libraries and archives in Newfoundland, other parts of Canada, the United States, and England. Eventually, it is hoped to include maps in collections in other countries, such as France and Spain. As well as including separate maps, an attempt is made to include maps in atlases, books, and periodicals, but it is not comprehensive. Very early, significant, maps of the region will be included, but the emphasis is on the area within the current geographical boundaries of the Province of Newfoundland. The time limits will be up to and including 1949, the date of Newfoundland's confederation with Canada, although some later maps are currently included. In the not too distant future, it is hoped to have an image displayed with the entry, at least for those in our collection.
