    HISTORY, MYTHS IN NEW ZEALAND
    HISTORY, MYTHS IN NEW ZEALAND
The present is constantly trying to remake the past for its own purposes; people so keenly feel that they are the product of their origins that they tend always to find in those origins what they choose to see rather than what is, in fact, there. So it has been in New Zealand's historical thinking, and the distortions which have resulted are not entirely without value. They mean, at the very least, that the past is still alive; were it not so people would not seek to alter it. But the academic historian, dedicated to reconstructing the past as faithfully as he may, must make it his business to detect and expose the myths, legends, and fallacies which accumulate around the past of his country. But he will not limit himself to mere exposure. The myths and legends, used themselves as evidence, are valuable clues to the mentality of the people who, more often than not unconsciously, constructed them. The first powered take-off in New Zealand is achieved on 31 March at Waitohi, near Temuka, when Richard Pearse flies his homebuilt craft 150 yards. His aircraft is powered by a two cylinder engine of his own design and construction. This is the sixth powered take-off in the world. (More about Richard Pearse George Bolt and friends RD Wraight and WM Angus form the Canterbury Aero Club, and become involved in gliding experiments from Christchurch's Cashmere Hills. On 5 February, brothers Leo and Vivian Walsh make the first successful controlled flight in a locally built Howard Wright biplane, with the plane rising to 60 feet and staying aloft to cover a distance of 400 yards. Joe Hammond, the first government-appointed pilot in New Zealand, flies over Auckland in a Bleriot monoplane to the awe of spectators at the Auckland Exhibition. JWH Scotland makes first long-distance flight, from Invercargill to Gore. He flies the 38 miles in 38 minutes. The brothers Leo and Vivian Walsh fly the first flying-boat on Auckland Harbour, and later form the New Zealand Flying School to train flying-boat pilots

    Pre-European
New Zealand was originally settled by waves of Polynesians some time between 1000 and 1300, although some evidence suggests an earlier settlement. Settlers of main islands of New Zealand became the Maori people. Separate settlement of the tiny Chatham Islands in the east of New Zealand produced the Moriori people, but it is uncertain whether the Moriori ancestors came directly from Polynesia or were mainland Maori who ventured eastward. Some of the Maori (particularly in the North Island ), called their new homeland " Aotearoa ", usually translated as "land of the long white cloud". The original settlers were moa hunters. Moa were large flightless birds similar to ostriches and rheas . Moa were pushed to extinction in the 19th century or earlier, not being adapted to human or mammalian predation. Before the coming of humans, the moa were the prey of the harpagornis or Haast's eagle, the largest bird of prey ever recorded. Harpagornis became extinct along with its prey. The moa-hunters may have merged with later waves of Polynesians who, according to Maori tradition, arrived between 952 and 1150.

New Zealand or Aotearoa , the Land of the Long White Cloud , is a country of two large islands and many much smaller islands in the south-western Pacific Ocean . Among South Pacific nations, New Zealand has the largest and most industrialised economy and is second only to Papua New Guinea in population. New Zealand is notable for its isolation, being separated from Australia on the northwest by the Tasman Sea , some 2,000 km wide. The closest neighbours to the north are

New Zealand labour history Material on this site relates to the history of the industrial labour movement in New Zealand. The author is David Verran . The focus is primarily on the period to 1937, when the New Zealand Federation of Labour was formed, but some material covers the history of particular unions to the 1990's and there is biographical material as well. The anti-union 1991 Employment Contracts Act caused a watershed in New Zealand industrial relations, and the organised labour landscape altered substantially. The 2000 Employment Relations Act attempted to remake some of the lost ground suffered by working people and their unions. Note of mourning for the passing of longtime union activist and socialist Bill Andersen , who died 19 January 2005. Those interested in New Zealand labour history should join the Trade Union History Project via The Treasurer, TUHP, P.O. Box 27-425, Wellington. You can quickly see WHAT’S NEW on this website. According to Google this is the most popular (most cited) website on an admittedly very narrow subject: The Chinese in New Zealand - with content biased towards the Chinese who have been in New Zealand for several generations. SITE HISTORY This website started out in 1998 as a whimsical exercise to use then-new web-based technology to re-publish articles originally in Chinese Voice This was a specialist section in Wellington’s City Voice newspaper now defunct which covered on-going aspects of the community, cultural and political life of the Chinese in Wellington, New Zealand. At the same time I took the opportunity to re-publish a few other articles which could be of historical interest. Since then, the site has grown considerably as I have added topical content about the Chinese community in New Zealand as it evolves – politically, socially and culturally. Generally the articles collected here have been "published" elsewhere, ie written and presented to an audience – speeches, conference papers, university papers, school term essays, letters to the editor, newspaper articles etc.
