Maori arrived from the central Pacific Ocean in great ocean-going sailing canoes approximately 1000 years ago. Led by great explorers and seafarers, they named the country Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud). Archaeological evidence suggests that the first arrivals settled in the South Island, although the majority of Maori settled later in the North Island. Here Maori developed a culture of fishing, hunting and gathering supplemented by settled agriculture, notably of the kumara (sweet potato), which they had carried from the islands. Their distinctive culture, including oral traditions, customs, waiata (song), crafts, and social systems is unique in the world.

    History
[edit this] [Upload image] Archaeological evidence indicates that New Zealand was populated by fishing and hunting people of East Polynesian ancestry perhaps 1 000 years before Europeans arrived. Known to some scholars as the Moa-hunters they may have merged with later waves of Polynesians who according to Maori tradition arrived between 952 and 1150. Some of the Maoris called their new homeland "Aotearoa " usually translated as "land of the long white cloud." In 1642 Abel Tasman a Dutch navigator made the first recorded European sighting of New Zealand and sketched sections of the two main islands' west coasts. English Captain James Cook thoroughly explored the coastline during three South Pacific voyages beginning in 1769. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries lumbering seal hunting and whaling attracted a few European settlers to New Zealand. In 1840 the United Kingdom established British sovereignty through the Treaty of Waitangi signed that year with Maori chiefs. In the same year selected groups from the U.K. began the colonization process. Expanding European settlement led to conflict with Maoris most notably in the Maori land wars of the 1860s. British and colonial forces eventually overcame determined Maori resistance. During this period many Maoris died from disease and warfare much of it intertribal.

New Zealand has been inhabited since at least A.D. 1000 by Polynesian Maoris. The first European to visit was the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman Cook In 1840 the first settlement was made at Wellington by a group sent by the New Zealand Company, founded by Edward Gibbon Wakefield. In that year the Treaty of Waitangi guaranteed to the Maoris the full possession of their land in exchange for their recognition of British sovereignty. But as European settlement increased, Maori opposition to land settlement resulted in continuing conflict from 1860 to 1872. Originally part of New South Wales (Australia), New Zealand became a separate colony in 1840 and received a large measure of self-government after 1852. In 1907 it assumed complete self-government as the Dominion of New Zealand, but, preferring that Great Britain handle most of its foreign affairs, did not confirm the Statute of Westminster (1931) until 1947.

New Zealand was first settled at least 1000 years ago by the Polynesian Maori, a well ordered tribal society led by hereditary chiefs and a powerful priesthood. The first European arrival was Dutchman Abel Tasman in 1642, although it was not until the voyages of Captain James Cook, in 1769 and 1779, that the islands were charted and explored.
British settlers began to emigrate after British sovereignty was established in 1840; Wellington was founded soon afterwards. New Zealand was granted internal self-government in 1852. The later years of the century saw a rapid growth in investment, communications and agricultural production. In 1893, New Zealand became the first country in the world to extend the vote to women. In 1907, New Zealand became a Dominion and its forces took part in both World Wars.
