New Zealand lies in the south-west Pacific Ocean and comprises two main and a number of smaller islands. Their combined area of 270,500 sq km is similar to the size of Japan or the British Isles.
The main islands, the North and South Islands, are separated by Cook Strait which at its narrowest point is 20 km wide. The administrative boundaries of New Zealand extend from 33° to 53° south latitude, and from 160° east to 173° west longitude.

Project Snapshot
In April and May 1998, biologist Colin Skinner trekked through the islands of New Zealand, leading Scholastic's "Science Expedition: New Zealand" Learning Adventure. Today, students participating in this project can read Colin's weekly field journals and explore the photos of the diverse geology, unusual wildlife, and rich cultures he encountered along the way. In addition, students can read transcripts of Colin's on-the-scene live interviews and trace his walking route on the interactive Trek Map. "Science Expedition: New Zealand" also links to Global Kid Connections, so students can learn firsthand about the everyday lives of kids from two schools in New Zealand.

    about Human Geography Print page
Human Geography is concerned with the way people interact with their social and physical environment to generate livelihoods, communities and senses of place. These concerns lead us to question variations in spatial patterns, the processes behind them and their operation at different scales. Human Geography at Victoria University of Wellington explores economic, social, and environmental dimensions of change in a variety of countries, regions and localities particularly in the Asia Pacific. Links: Full SES course listing. Human Geography Staff Research in Human Geography Asia Pacific Viewpoint (APV) Human Geography Courses
Human Geography Research at Victoria We live in a multi-dimensional and complex world which is changing rapidly. Our research addresses the impacts of these changes at the global, national, regional and local scale. Our concern with the spatial differentiation of human activity together with the focus on human-environmental interaction is what makes human geography unique among the social sciences. We are proud of the distinctive "Asia - Pacific viewpoint" which permeates our work. In terms of area focus we are committed to the idea that being outward-oriented enables us to understand better the position of New Zealand/Aotearoa in our globalising world. We have active research projects in all of the major area groupings around, and within, the Pacific Rim - including both New Zealand and Australia, the Island Pacific, East and South-East Asia and Latin America. We have developed a particular strength in human geography research in the following countries; New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Chile.

Physical geography is the study of the earth's surface features and processes. It aims to explain the geographic pattern of landforms, soils, vegetation, hydrology, coasts, and climate by understanding the processes operating at the surface of the earth. Whereas the physical processes involved link the discipline closely to other earth sciences, the dependence of human activity on physical resources and human impact on the environment also link the subject to geography.
