Membership of the Otago Branch of the NZGS could be an important first step in your career as a professional geographer. Membership entitles you to copies of The New Zealand Geographer and The New Zealand Journal of Geography, in which you may eventually seek to publish the results of your research. It can also provide you with a way into the New Zealand community of geographers. The New Zealand Geographical Society is the professional body for geographers in New Zealand and has a branch at each of the six universities with a Department of Geography. The Otago Branch offers a programme of lectures and field trips to its members, and organises special events for high schools in southern New Zealand. The NZGS sends current copies of its publications to geographical societies across the world and, in return, receives copies of their publications. This exchange material is currently divided between the University of Canterbury and the University of Otago, where they are available for consultation. We have a listing of those journals held here.

    Preamble
The Geography of New Zealand is an exploration of the factors
and processes that have shaped the places and spaces of New Zealand,
with emphasis on the southern part of the country. Natural environmental systems provided landscapes and resources with which successive communities have interacted to produce the geographies of today. We investigate this process of transformation, across different spaces, at varying scales, involving different change processes. Along the way we consider the physical and ecological make-up of the New Zealand environment, and the imperatives that directed successive communities as they gradually exerted greater influence over the character of the landscape through agriculture, mining, industry and settlement. The inward movement of people to New Zealand, from different parts of the world, and the geographical consequences of those movements, are considered, providing a basis

    R. Yorke Edwards The best places in New Zealand lie beyond the road end. They are beyond the popular tourist routes and beyond the visitor information centers. They are beyond the guidebooks and beyond the information channel in hotel rooms. But some people are searching for something beyond travelling in large groups with other tourists. We believe there is a better way. We are dedicated to the quality of your experience, not the quantity of people we can put through. To understand what we do at Wild Walks it is helpful to start at the beginning, the land.
Mount Aspiring being overridden by westerly cloud The mountains in New Zealand are very young, they have not had the time to wear down like the Rockies or the European Alps. These mountains are still lifting, and the loose sedimentary rock is constantly shifting. Land slips are a common occurrence. Small land slips or even whole mountain sides collapse into the valleys with frightening regularity. Geographically, this combination of large rain events and sedimentary rock, results in a land of deep valleys and gorges. The fast moving water carves into the mountains leaving deep gorges and depositing large amounts of sediment into the valleys.

    Remote in the Southern Seas
New Zealand lies about 1,600 km from both Australia and Polynesia. Its three main islands are the North and South islands and Stewart Island, or Rakiura, lying due south of the South Island. The South Island (150,437 sq km), often referred to as ‘the mainland’ by its inhabitants, is larger than the North Island (113,729 sq km). Stewart Island is 1,680 sq km. The terms ‘deep south’ for Southland and ‘far north’ for Northland hint at the length of the main islands. The Māori names also signify the country’s long, narrow shape – the North Island is Te Ika a Māui (the fish of Māui, a legendary character), and the South is Te Waka o Māui (the canoe of Māui). The three main islands stretch 1,500 km across latitudes 34° to 47° south. New Zealand is an archipelago with over 700 offshore islands. Most are small and lie within 50 km of the coast. The islands are the visible surface of an extensive submarine plateau, and enable the country to enjoy a huge exclusive economic zone (fishing grounds). The Chatham Islands are 800 km east of the South Island. There are also several uninhabited island groups: the Kermadec Islands lie about 1,000 km north-east of Auckland; the Bounty, Snares, Antipodes, Auckland and Campbell islands lie south of the mainland.
