Introduction
While British culture predominates within the country, Maori culture is increasingly being identified with New Zealand, due to haka displays by New Zealand sporting teams, and to tens of thousands of visitors who each year experience and film or photograph Maori culture events held at places such as Rotorua British culture in New Zealand has been significantly influenced by Maori and other Polynesians. Scottish influences are strong, mainly in the South Island . In general, early immigrants from other parts of Europe and Asia , and World War II refugees (particularly the Dutch ) were readily assimilated. Small enclaves of these early immigrant cultures remain as islands in a sea of British colonial culture. Unlike Australia , New Zealand has not experienced sizeable immigration from Mediterranean countries in Southern Europe , but in recent years there has been a considerable influx of migrants from Asia , which now makes up a significant proportion of the population, particularly in Auckland.

Located in the southwest Pacific, New Zealand has two main islands - the North (115,000 sq km) and South (151,000 sq km) - and a number of smaller islands, including bushclad Stewart Island (1700 sq km). The country is famous for its natural beauty and scenic attractions, from snow-capped mountains, glaciers and fiords to thermal geysers, volcanoes, sub-tropical rainforests and magnificent sandy beaches.
History
The first Polynesians arrived in New Zealand in a series of migrations over several generations, from about AD 1000. Maori tradition has it that the great Maori explorer, Kupe, first discovered New Zealand, and his wife Hine-te-aparangi named it Aotearoa (the Land of the Long White Cloud). Early European explorers included Dutch navigator Abel Tasman in 1642, who named it Nieuw Zeeland after the Netherlands' Zeeland province. Captain James Cook arrived in 1769, becoming the first European to set foot on New Zealand soil. The country's founding bi-cultural document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed in 1840 between some Maori chiefs and representatives of the British Government. A series of 'land wars' followed as Maori battled to hold onto their ancestral lands. Today, tribal land claims are settled by the Waitangi Tribunal, and Maori culture is becoming a growing influence.

The Trouble With Lifestyle Entrepreneurs
New Zealand's business owners have struck a work-life balance that many of their American counterparts would envy. So why is this becoming a national crisis? And what's the lesson for us? From: Inc. Magazine, July 2005 Page 21 By: Daniel McGinn Photographs by: Chris Sisarich Anyone who wants to schedule a meeting with the founders of Burke Publishing had better be flexible. The textbook publishing company is run by Rory and Sandra Burke, a husband-and-wife team who operate the business from a 35-foot sailboat, the Pacific Voyager , in the coastal waters off New Zealand. Their floating headquarters has on occasion anchored miles beyond cell phone or e-mail range. It's a fabulous lifestyle, but one that severely limits their company's growth potential. document.write(ibHtml1);

New Zealand is a temperate island nation in the South Pacific Ocean . A former British colony, the majority of the population is of European descent, with a sizeable indigenous Maori minority and smaller minorities of various Polynesian and other groups. A modern but sparsely populated country, it boasts natural beauty and a wide range of outdoor and adventure activities. It was named God's Own Country as far back as the 1880s and travellers generally agree it deserves that description.
