Activities Culture and Heritage Rotorua, the heartland of New Zealand's Maori culture. Enveloping warmth, a proud spirit, a deep sense of history and a quick humour - you'll find all these qualities in your experiences with Maori culture. It's the sensation we call Manaakitanga. Opportunities to come face to face with Maori culture abound in Rotorua - in performances and in expertly conceived displays, and in your encounters with the descendants of the original Te Arawa tribes who made Rotorua their home. Picturesque cobbled and lantern lined streetways and striking Tudor architecture celebrate New Zealand's significant colonial history. There's no better place to experience unique "kiwi farm culture" than Rotorua. Feed the lambs, calves and other farm critters - either by staying overnight on a working farm - or taking in the action of an entertaining farm show. The Hocken Collections
The Hocken Collections is one of the foremost historical research libraries in New Zealand. It was established in 1910 when Dr Thomas Morland Hocken gave his private collection to the University of Otago, in trust for the people of New Zealand. The Library collects widely in relation to the history and culture of New Zealand, the Pacific and Antarctica, and has a special emphasis on the regions of Otago and Southland. The research collections include: archives, manuscripts, books, pamphlets, newspapers, maps, periodicals, paintings, drawings, photographs, music, and film. These collections are housed in secure stacks and can be consulted in the reading rooms and exhibition galleries at the Library. Top of page
Who was Dr Hocken?
The Hocken Collections owes its existence to the vigorous collecting and subsequent generosity of a Dunedin doctor, Thomas Morland Hocken (1836-1910). Born in Lincolnshire, the son of a Wesleyan minister, Hocken qualified in medicine in 1856 and worked as a ship's surgeon between England and Australia until settling in Dunedin in 1862. As a doctor, and coroner for 22 years, T.M. Hocken became one of the city's best-known figures - 'a neat, dapper little man, with a short-clipped beard and dark lively eyes. Bustling, energetic, intensely industrious, he had a winning personality and infectious enthusiasm.'

Introduction
While British culture predominates within the country, it is Maori culture which is increasingly being identified worldwide as the New Zealand culture, due to haka displays by New Zealand sporting teams, and to tens of thousands of visitors who each year experience and film or photograph Maori culture events held at places such as Rotorua British culture in New Zealand has been significantly influenced by Maori and other Polynesians, and Scottish influences are particularly strong, mainly in the South Island . In general, early immigrants from other parts of Europe and Asia , and World War II refugees (particularly the Dutch ) were readily assimilated.

New Zealand Introduction New Zealand has a population of slightly less than 4 million people with most living in the key cities. The large majority of the population (89%) has a European heritage, primarily English. Therefore, English is the predominant language and Christianity the largest religion. The Maori, a Polynesian people who were the earliest inhabitants of New Zealand make up the remaining population. There is little racial tension between the Maori and the predominately European/English people. Though Maori and Europeans freely intermarry and have similar ways of life, each maintains its identity, so social and cultural aspects remain distinct for each group. The standard of living is high, and their literacy rate is 100%. The state provides extensive social services for the welfare of its citizens, and has one of the most comprehensive health care programs in the world. Adding to their quality of life is the nation's geographic location and size. No one is greater than 75 miles from the ocean and the climate that encourages outdoor activities. This nation actively participates in hiking, fishing, sailing, and competitive sports. Although New Zealand is often mentioned in the same sentence with Australia, New Zealanders do not appreciate this mutual reference, as they are an independent nation.
