Country Info New Zealand Introduction New Zealand General Data New Zealand Maps New Zealand Culture ... New Zealand Time and Date New Zealand Culture Back to Top European cultural life has progressed rapidly since the early 20th century. Numerous writers were active in the late 19th century, the most successful of whom were historians, such as William Pember Reeves, and ethnologists, including S. Percy Smith and Elsdon Best. The work of the first genuinely original writers of fiction, the short-story writer Katherine Mansfield and the poet R.A.K. Mason, did not appear until the 1920s. During the harsh years of the Great Depression of the 1930s a group of poets appeared and accomplished a national tradition of writing. Although determined by contemporary English literature—T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden were greatly respected—they wrote about their New Zealand experience. The most famous member of this group was Allen Curnow. A.R.D. Fairburn, Denis Glover, and Charles Brasch were other major poets. At the same time Frank Sargeson began writing the superb stories in New Zealand vernacular for which he became well known.

    • Merchant Navy
During the Second World War the Merchant Navy sailed the ships that delivered troops, military equipment and vital cargoes of food, fuel and raw materials across the world's oceans. This work was so essential to the Allies' war effort that the Merchant Navy was effectively regarded as the 'fourth service' alongside the army, navy and air force. Read a brief history of the Merchant Navy at war and listen to the stories of some of the men who were there. VE / VJ Days
After over five years of rationing and anxiety about loved ones overseas, New Zealanders greeted the coming of peace in Europe in May 1945, and then victory over Japan in August, with understandable relief and enthusiasm. We Call it Home: A History of State Housing in New Zealand
For one hundred years the state has provided rental homes for tens of thousands of New Zealanders unable to afford a home of their own. This feature provides an historical overview of the subject including some of the stories of state house tenants, historical film and sound clips and a wealth of historical and recent images.

CULTURE Maori are the indigenous people of the land (tangata whenua) of New Zealand and their culture is an integral part of New Zealand life. Visitors to New Zealand are presented with many opportunities to experience Maori culture first-hand. The best-known of these is the thermal region of Rotorua in the North Island, where tourists can experience Maori kai (food) cooked on hot stones underground as part of a traditional hangi. They can also enjoy a Maori powhiri (welcome), visit local marae (meeting grounds), listen to kapa haka (traditional performances of song and dance) and relax in the popular thermal pools.

Among the many regions three places you won't want to miss on your visit include the Bay of Islands in the far North Island, the birth place of the country and signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, Rotorua in the heart of the North Island, and Wellington in the lower North Island. Bay of Islands
The Far North is rich in history having welcomed the first missionaries, witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and housed the first seat of Government at Russell. Blessed with the country's highest average temperatures, it has earned the nickname of 'The Winterless North.' The Waipawa Forest, North of Dargaville is home to the last great stand of Kauri trees, some of them, over 2000 years old. Rotorua
Rainbow - Rotorua
Wellington

Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. A cosmopolitan and friendly city with some of the country's best restaurants and fine entertainment. It's a city that's small enough to be explored on foot, yet large enough to be the centre of the arts. Definitely visit Te Papa - NZ's national museum. Then choose from many other national institutions including the National Archives (see the original Treaty of Waitangi), the National Library (the Alexander Turnbull collection), and the New Zealand Film Archive. Te Papa - Wellington
Te Papa National Museum tells the great stories of New Zealand's land and its people. From high culture to Kiwiana, a unique museum experience that New Zealand is proud of.

Indigenous Culture
The Maori people are the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and first arrived here in waka hourua (voyaging canoes) from their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki over 1000 years ago. Today, Maori make up over 14 percent of the population. Their language and culture has a major impact on all facets of New Zealand life. Rich and Varied Maori culture is a rich and varied one, and includes traditional and contemporary arts. Traditional arts such as carving, weaving, kapa haka (group performance), whaikorero (oratory) and moko (tattoo) are practised throughout the country. Practitioners following in the footsteps of their tipuna (ancestors) replicate the techniques used hundreds of years ago, yet also develop exciting new techniques and forms. Today Maori culture also includes art, film, television, poetry, theatre, and hip-hop. The visitor to New Zealand will become immediately aware of the Maori language as the vast majority of place names are of Maori origin. At first, visitors may be puzzled by the seemingly impossible- to-pronounce names. In fact, Maori has a logical structure, and, unlike English, has very consistent rules of pronunciation.

Maori & New Zealand culture: The Maori are thought to have migrated to New Zealand (Aotearoa) in several waves around 950 A.D. from the island of Hawaiiki. The name "Aotearoa" translates to "land of the long white cloud". Today Maori make up 15% of the population in New Zealand. The maori heritage of New Zealand is very important and is illustrated by the large number of place names with maori origins. Maori culture is known for both their traditional and contemporary art. These include traditional maori carving, weaving and kapa haka (group performances) as well as the contemporary art, film, poetry, theatre, and hip-hop. Typical maori greetings are:
  • Kia ora - Hello Kia ora tatou - Hello everyone Haere mai - Welcome Tena koutou - Greeting to you all Kei te pehea koe? - How's it going? Kei te pai - Good Haere ra - Farewell Ka kite ano - Until I see you again

There are no elevators in New Zealand buildings. Like Europeans, New Zealand refers to those devices as Lifts (above). They also do not count the Ground Floor as the First Floor (left). A building with 6 floors actually has 7 in New Zealand It was not a surprise that New Zealand electrical standards differ from those in the United States . At right is a typical 220 volt wall outlet (the U.S. standard is 110 volt). What was interesting is that every wall outlet in every building throughout the country had its own dedicated power on/off switch. It seemed odd, because we never found appliances that did not have an on/off switch and if we were at the outlet's location, we could just as easily unplug a device rather than "switch" it off. We also found that rocking switches down was actually the "on" position of these switches while in the United States , we generally move the switch up to turn on power.

Although I've always enjoyed an order of lobster, I've never been much of an expert about them. After our trip to New Zealand , I am even more confused since crayfish seems to be a popular alternative. For some reason, lobster sounds much more palatable to me than something called crayfish. At right, examples of such creatures await their fate in a restaurant holding tank. On two occasions, our APT coach rounded a corner and a herd of cows or flock of sheep suddenly appeared. Scenes of farmers herding large groups of livestock is a popular topic for New Zealand post cards. I was disappointed that I did not get any good shots of animals being herded across or along roadways. It can be an awesome sight. The photographs here (above and below) have been "salvaged". The images only look presentable because their reduced size disguises blur and imperfections. They were all taken from inside the moving coach on a rainy day. If you look closely at the center of the image below, I have "patched" the image to remove the coach's windshield wiper. In many of the cities and towns there might be one McDonald's such as the one advertised on the back of a
