... Recommended Experiences Queensland When thinking of Australia, most people picture lazy days on white sand beaches. Nowhere is this image of Australia more of a reality than in Queensland. Justifiably known as the “sunshine state,” Queenslanders enjoy a lifestyle that makes other Australians green with envy. Along with its perfect climate and sleepy seaside towns, Queensland is also home to a 110-million-year-old rainforest, and one of the natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef. View a selection of Excursions in Queensland. Click Map to Enlarge Brisbane In a nation bordered by beaches, Brisbane is the only place where you can find one in the city. Skyscrapers and swimmers come together at South Bank Parkland, a popular local haunt, containing an artificial swimming beach, weekend markets and cheerful cafes. Recent development within the city has resulted in an explosion of exceptional theaters, galleries and concert halls, earning Brisbane the title of arts capital of Queensland.

A JOURNEY TO NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA
SUMMER OF 2005
OBJECTIVES

Opportunities abound when one is willing to walk that extra mile in order to make a difference in the world. What a sad reality it is that such statements are so often made with no seriousness of intent and thus are so rarely acted upon. It is ironic that although animal health and welfare issues are at a peak of awareness, the increasingly industrialized and populated nature of our world makes it increasingly difficult to find appropriate and plausible solutions to animal and agricultural based problems. In light of the aforementioned concerns, it is our hope that the Global Vets Program will provide us, Canadian veterinary students, with the opportunity to become active participants in the global agricultural and animal health communities. There are unique animal health avenues within New Zealand and Australia that we endeavor to pursue with respect to livestock production and endemic wildlife management. Furthermore, within Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, there exist economical, public health, and animal health and welfare concerns surrounding wildlife conservation and management, livestock production, and their sustainable coexistence. These concerns are currently at the forefront of scientific research and subject to a peak in public awareness. Traveling to New Zealand and Australia in the capacity of the Global Vets Program would expose us to these pertinent animal health and agricultural-based developments and concerns, serving to broaden the base of knowledge upon which we may build our veterinary careers, be it as researchers, teachers, or clinicians, within or outside the boundaries of our own country.

@import url(/includes/style-modern.css); Zoo Animals Animal Habitats Islands in Isolation Forests will Flourish ... Islands of Isolation Islands in Isolation is one of three conservation themes that Wellington Zoo plans to develop to help promote the need for the sustainable use of New Zealand's natural resources and a balance between humans and nature. This theme will explain the consequences of wildlife evolving in isolation, using New Zealand, Australia and Madagascar as examples. New Zealand and Madagascar have remarkable similarities in evolutionary terms. The wildlife in both countries evolved almost entirely from a single type of animal: birds in New Zealand and lemurs (a primate) in Madagascar. These species evolved to occupy all the available niches in their ecosystem. In other parts of the world these niches were filled by mammals: rodents, foxes, cats and badgers. In New Zealand these places were filled by our large number of flightless birds. The kiwi is a perfect example, having many mammal characteristics.

We came to Brisbane just to go to the Australia Zoo, home of the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin and his wife Terri. It's just a short drive north of Brisbane. Although we didn't get to see him (we didn't really expect to), we had a great time seeing their collection of crocs, alligators, poisonous snakes, and various other animals you never get to see in the Americas such as a wombat and a tasmanian devil. Welcome to the third issue of Down Under Lighting. Over the last few months I have been asked for information on the popularity of the interLight site so I queried this with Dave Burtner, President of interLight Inc.(dkb@light-link.com) and he has advised that for September over 35,000 visits (now over 40.000) from many parts of the world were made with over 1000 from Australia and just over 200 from NZ. Prior to the first issue of this column about 200 visits were being made from this part of the World. The message to our Australian / NZ. commercial visitors is that sending us your news and views not only provides general interest here and overseas but also lets the International lighting industry know who you are and what you are about. As always please contact me at regrw@acay.com.au

    Melbourne
Settled in the 1850s when gold was discovered in the surrounding hills, Melbourne has developed into a cosmopolitan, cultural city with a very European feel - from the attractive colonial architecture to the quaint trams which criss-cross the city streets.
It's also become a true melting pot of different cultures - Greek, Italian, Chinese and Lebanese - ensuring that the restaurants are outstanding, diverse and numerous. It's said that Australia's best shopping can be found in Melbourne too - with the magnificent city arcades, lanes around Swanston St, massive Melbourne Central Shopping Complex, trendy Chapel St for Australian fashions and Toorak Rd for top brands. Popular attractions in the city include the zoo - the oldest in the world - where the animals roam around in spacious, natural surrounds, the Gold Treasury Museum, and Rialto Towers Observation Deck for breathtaking views across the city and beyond. Out of town, the Great Ocean Road has spectacular stand-alone rock formations and great surfing beaches for the experts, while nature lovers will enjoy the Dandenong Ranges and wine buffs should head to Yarra Valley to indulge in some excellent wine tasting.
