A high percentage of Australia's population lives close to the coast of southeastern Australia. Here are Australia's most vibrant cities, with magnificent beaches and easy access to mountains, forests, wine country and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Sydney is one of the most beautiful cosmopolitan cities in the world with its amazing harbour.
Must Do's:
  • Experience Sydney by ferry, charter cruise, and yacht or water taxi. View the world from the top of the harbour bridge. Visit Sydney Opera House Explore The Rocks, the site of Australia's first European settlement Surf at Bondi Beach or Manly Beach Shop or play at Darling Harbour
Beyond Sydney: Just two hours drive north of Sydney is the Hunter Region, where you will find sparking waterways, rugged mountains, forests and fascinating towns reflecting the colonial heritage.
The Hunter Wine Country is Australia's oldest wine producing area. Here are some of Australia's most famous wineries, sprinkled throughout the back roads of the beautiful hills near Cessnock (92 miles north). You can take a horse-drawn carriage, soar in a hot air balloon or leisurely cycle through beautiful and peaceful countryside.
Known as 'The Events Capital", this magical metropolis revels in its easy ways. Enjoy glorious architecture, superb hotels, fabulous theaters, art galleries, famous zoo, curious trams, wonderful shopping, rambling parks and leafy gardens, incredible sports and an array of fine restaurants that make eating out a great experience.

Day 1: USA or Canada - Auckland, New Zealand
Depart the USA or Canada on an overnight flight to New Zealand. Day 2: International Date Line
Cross the International Date Line and "lose" a day, regained on our homebound trip. Day 3: Auckland

After a morning walk in the Redwood Forest, we fly to Queenstown on South Island, with the evening at leisure.

What a change, to be able to sit in the warm sun, sip beer and have a cold spread for Christmas lunch. This is where we were introduced to the whole family, spending the rest of the afternoon chatting and finally going for a brisk walk to settle things down. Boxing day Russell took me to visit a Barbecue Emporium, I had never dreamt of the varieties and gadgets that were available, but then neither had I seen a "Mini Cooper S" barbecue before. Russell drove us around in a 1929 Dodge that he had fully restored and we visited with many of their friends and relations. Included in our stay was a Champagne Breakfast, followed by a visit to the Australian Zoo, a Kayaking trip with an ex

Indonesian contract workers protest Caltex layoffs Nearly 4,000 workers from labour-hire company PT Tripatra in Indonesia demonstrated outside the PT Caltex offices in Pekanbaru and Duri on September 17. The protest blocked all access to the buildings. Tripatra workers, who are hired on contract to Caltex, were protesting against company plans to cut the casual construction workforce by 3,700. They also want PT Tripatra to improve its severance pay offer. Tripatra has offered to pay 27 million rupiah ($US3,000) to each employee but workers claim that other Caltex contractors pay displaced employees 100 million rupiah each ($US11,000). Workers oppose government bill The Korean Government Employees Union (KGEU), representing 900,000 government workers, announced this week that it will begin industrial action against legislation creating an alternate organisation to cover public servants. The new organisation will have the right to conduct limited collective bargaining but will be barred from calling strikes and other forms of industrial action.

SENIORS ABROAD Exchange program enables older Americans to experience foreign lands with a more personal touch by placing them with senior hosts during their visit By MARK FREEMAN Anyone taking a guided tour Down Under likely will learn that New Zealanders drive on the left side of the road, the ocean is warm and that kangaroo meat tastes like chicken. Yet on Charlyn Adams' trip abroad, the Medford woman also came to realize that every school kid in New Zealand is taught to swim, that bread there is sold in square loaves and that Australians do not refrigerate their eggs. Sam and Charlyn Adams are shown a blue penguin by New Zealand penguin guide Bevan Smith. The Adamses visited the two countries through the Seniors Abroad program. "They keep their eggs in a pantry," says Adams, 59. "You wouldn't know that unless you went to a grocery story and then to a home." Adams did go to a grocery store and several homes as a traveling guest under an unusual kind program for seniors looking for a more tangible experience abroad.

    Australia - New Zealand Advice
    30 August 2004
once before Web Essentials 04 Australian natives excited driving around Australia in a VW Kombi , like some of my friends. Most of my first week will be spent arriving, dealing with jetlag, finding my way around, then closing out that first week with the conference. After that, I have just three weeks to balance out between Australia and New Zealand. Aside from the conference, nothing is really planned yet. In a Sunburned Country . Tonight, I picked up Dunstan, and we drove over to the new REI, San Francisco to pick up a few travel essentials. Once again, I was so overwhelmed by everything in the store, to avoid spending a fortune on everything I wanted, I walked away with nothing. Where should I go? What cities and destinations should I hit? What should I not miss if at all possible? Where should I stay? Where should I eat? What should I eat? What experiences should I absolutely try my hardest to fit in? How should I get around? Should I keep lugging my laptop with me after the conference? And the flip side: Anything I should skip? What should I avoid? contact form Thanks
