Sowing seeds of hatred Islamic textbooks scapegoat Jews, Christians
By LARRY COHLER-ESSES
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Yahiya Emerick, author of IBTS texts, teaches a class at Islamic school in Westbury, L.I. He says that while Islam is the true faith, books are evenhanded. Textbooks widely used in New York's Islamic schools contain passages that are blatantly anti-Semitic, condemning Jews as a people, repeating old canards about the Jews wanting to kill Christ and faking their Holy Scriptures to mock God. The Islamic texts teach that "the Jews" killed their own prophets and betrayed the Prophet Muhammed through their inherent deceitfulness. The books, obtained during a three-month Daily News investigation that included visits to private Muslim schools, are rife with inaccuracies, sweeping condemnations of Jews and Christians, and triumphalist declarations of Islam's supremacy. In Long Island City, Queens, for example, fifth- and sixth-graders at the Ideal Islamic School on 12th St. learn that Allah has revealed that "the Jews killed their own prophets and disobeyed Allah." At the Muslim Center Elementary School on Geranium Ave. in Flushing, Queens, a textbook for grades 6 through 8 teaches that Jews "subscribe to a belief in racial superiority. … Their religion even teaches them to call down curses upon the worship places of non-Jews whenever they pass by them! They arrogantly refer to anyone who is not Jewish as 'gentiles,' equating them with sin."

E. V. Kontorovich EMAIL RESPOND PRINT N F As for the schools that do get built, cracked floors, slanted walls, and temperamental heating are common. P.S. 20 in Queens promptly sank into the landfill the SCA built it on, delaying its opening three years; P.S. 43—the infamous floating school—flooded with 400,000 gallons of seawater. Repairs don’t go any better: in 1996, investigators found that a majority of recently renovated schools suffered serious flaws. In Manhattan’s P.S. 158, SCA "repairs" left behind broken intercoms, a new air-conditioning system that refused to work, and floors with missing tiles. In George Washington High School, a leaky ceiling has collapsed three times over the past four years. I Several outside inspectors have taken the SCA to task for lax safety, but the authority invariably shrugs off such criticism. A 1994 study by the Senate Committee on Investigations deemed the authority’s projects "unsafe," and a mayoral commission warned in 1996 that "imminent calamity is at our door." Yet the SCA flatly denies the charges, or, on the rare occasions when it admits a mistake, claims to have addressed it promptly. But auditors question those claims—with good reason. Most recently, inspecting 150 work sites after the P.S. 131 accident, safety inspectors discovered 38 violations at 29 of them, including nine where contractors did exterior work without sidewalk sheds.

Lisa Snell On March 17, 2005, 15-year-old Delusa Allen was shot in the head while leaving Locke High School in Los Angeles, sending her into intensive care and eventually killing her. Four months before that several kids were injured in a riot at the same school, and last year the district had to settle a lawsuit by a student who required eye surgery after he was beaten there. In 2000, 17-year-old Deangelo Anderson was shot just across the street from Locke; he lay dead on the sidewalk for hours before the coroner came to collect his body. Violent crime is common at Locke. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, in the 2003-–04 school year its students suffered three sex offenses, 17 robberies, 25 batteries, and 11 assaults with a deadly weapon. And that’s actually an improvement over some past years: In 2000–01 the school had 13 sex offenses, 43 robberies, 57 batteries, and 19 assaults with a deadly weapon.
