In all, some 750 children spend their weekday afternoons with us, engaging in a full program of educational, cultural and recreational activities, and enjoying a nutritious dinner as well. Young people also have a chance to exercise their creative muscle, engaging in arts classes of every stripe. Howard New York Harbor School an the American Sail Training Association CAMP link to The New York Harbor School CAMP for SCIENCE and SEAMANSHIP expands upon the daily working relationship that New York Harbor School has developed with South Street Seaport Museum's schooner Lettie G. Howard. Every day this fall, Lettie has taken 25 Harbor School students sailing in New York Harbor and the Hudson River, learning sail training, seamanship, marine biology and teamwork. This spring, each student - 125 in total - will sail aboard the Lettie six times, continuing the same lessons and expanding upon those learned in the classroom. The proposed CAMP for SCIENCE and SEAMANSHIP will give this relationship the opportunity to blossom during the summer In addition to operating the ship, students will have curriculum consisting of science, literature and seamanship that will build upon lessons learned during the school year. Each student will document the experiences on and off the ship through extensive journal entries. Students will follow a reading list of maritime literature and have workshops discussing assigned readings during off watch time periods. Through this camp students will have the chance to sail, board and depart the vessel in many cities they would normally never have the chance to visit. Students will have the opportunity to visit historical sites and museums with crewmembers accompany them along the way. Students will live aboard the ship and be apart of the crew for the duration of the five-day program, and then travel back to New York when the vessel reaches port.

Back to Special Initiatives The New York Times Summer Jobs Program In June 2003, responding to budget cuts in the publicly subsidized summer jobs program, The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund established an emergency program to provide 1,000 jobs for low-income youth in NYC. The jobs were created by the seven social service agencies that receive funds from The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund; and TASC was chosen to administer the grant money and provide technical assistance, job training and general oversight for the program. In the program’s first year, over 800 youth were placed in summer jobs at 100 different sites. Young employees in the Summer Jobs Program work in a range of education and youth programs: as day camp counselors, organizing art workshops and recreation programs (Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service); as gardening aides, growing vegetables and helping kids with art projects using natural substances (Center for Family Life); or as the group leaders who form the staffing core of so many of the city’s summer recreation programs. Through these experiences, youth workers learn valuable skills such as leadership, confidence, and classroom management.
