Austin Readers for School Libraries,
Austin, TX The mission of the Austin Readers for School Libraries is to "encourage and facilitate children's reading, to instill a passion for books, and to promote libraries as strong, vital institutions that are central to the well being of their schools and community." In 1995, the Board of the Austin ISD threatened to cut library positions in several of the city's smaller elementary schools. One parent, Virginia Raymond, made an impassioned plea before the Austin Independent School District Board to retain the staff. A school library supporter on the board was so impressed with Ms. Raymond that he suggested she reach out to other parents who shared her belief in the importance of quality library service in the schools. Thus the Austin Readers for School Libraries were born. Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary School Friends of the Library

After a one-year hiatus upon the Foundation closing it's U.S. based programs, Media Workshop tentatively has plans to partner with New York University's Department of Teaching and Learning's Ruth Horowitz Center for Professional Development. In forming this collaborative partnership, our goal is to continue to offer professional development to New York City public schools, while expanding to include work with pre-service teachers at NYU as el.

City Creates New Paths to a Diploma
By Elissa Gootman
New York Times
May 29, 2004 Faced with embarrassingly high dropout rates, the New York City Department of Education is moving aggressively to expand or create alternative high school programs for students who are behind in their credits. The new programs, costing a total of $8 million, all lead to regular high school diplomas rather than high school equivalency, or G.E.D., degrees. They will serve as many as 2,000 students, focusing mostly on the five large, overcrowded schools in the Bronx that officials say have some of the highest dropout rates in the city. While many alternative high schools accept only older students, some of the new schools will accept students as young as 15. The programs, which will vary in hours of operation and student qualifications for acceptance, are the latest element of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's efforts to overhaul the city school system, long plagued by abysmal graduation figures.

Poker Craze Spurs Popular Emory Math Class
A few hands of Texas Hold 'Em poker or a round of backgammon are typical assignments in an Emory University seminar on "Mathematics in Sports, Games and Gambling." The course takes mathematical concepts and applies them "in ways you wouldn't normally think about," says instructor Ronald Gould, Goodrich C. White Professor of Mathematics. Students learn about probability, game theory and combinatorial design theory by investigating topics from the world of sports, competitive games of strategy, casino games, lotteries and the mathematical theory of games. When it comes to gambling, the course serves as a cautionary tale when students see just how bad their chances are of winning, says Gould. In 2005, nearly $2 trillion will be spent on medical care in America. And, in return for that investment, almost nobody will be happy with the U.S. health care system. This special report from Knowledge@Emory and the Boston Consulting group explores some of the issues facing the U.S. health care industry, and speaks with Emory experts in a variety of roles about the challenges of navigating an increasingly strained system.
