Introduction
NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center rises 26 stories high along the East River on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The medical center (formerly called New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center) originated from an affiliation agreement between The Society of The New York Hospital and Cornell University Medical College. It first opened its doors to patients and to medical students in the fall of 1932. The medical center's current name recognizes and incorporates two recent changes: on December 31, 1997, The New York Hospital merged with Presbyterian Hospital to form NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital; and on April 23, 1998, the medical college was renamed in honor of its long-time supporters, Joan and Sanford I. Weill.
The archives contains a treasure trove of original records that document the long history and present-day activities of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University, as well as the many other institutions that merged to form the current medical center. In addition to the institutional records, the archives has over 80 collections of personal papers of noted individuals who have been associated with the medical center. The approximately 6000 linear feet of records represent a continuous chronicle of health care, scientific research, and medical education dating back to 1771.
