41. The School Library Media Center & Construction Of The Subject
The school Library media Center. Construction of the Subject. by Bria O Brien new york Monthly Review Press, 1971. Foucualt, Michel.
http://www.libr.org/PL/23_O'Brien.html
Issue number 23, Spring 2004 The School Library Media Center by Bria O'Brien Freire, 16 T Computer Technology and the Ideological Construction of the Subject Science as Ideological Authority Students through physical and theoretical educational practices acknowledge themselves as subjects and help to produce and maintain the power structure and logic of their particular society. School is where day after day they learn that straight lines are better, more efficient, and more accepted than curvy lines. They learn to raise their hands and in doing so acknowledge, like the citizen who turns when the police officer calls out, who has the power to let them speak or not let them speak. Like the Microsoft Word program that gives immediate feedback on the quality of the students writing, the lessons students learn on computers give the same kind of immediate feedback. Usually lessons are taught through a hypertext program that asks a series of questions that the participant must answer correctly before moving on. Thus students are given immediate feedback on whether they got the question right or wrong. They are constantly being examined and observed. Prior to the heavy use of computer technology students were given feedback, but at a much slower rate. Students then had time to consider what they had done right or wrong and think of solutions to the problem. Now though with immediate feedback this time is taken away from them. Time to for free association is limited. In this sense it constantly points out the difference between the individual and the dominant norm.

There is no other program just like ours. However, there are some schools that have similar programs, and even other schools that offer programs in areas that people inquiring about the ETC are often interested in. In the spirit of collaboration, we offer the following list for your information. Also included on the list are research centers that do not grant degrees or certificates.

Betty Bonicioli - audio-visual clerk Ms. Burnett, Media Specialist After growing up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I graduated from Slippery Rock University with a B.S. in library science and elementary education. I was an officer in my sorority. The members of Kappa Delta Pi, the honorary education fraternity, voted me the outstanding senior. My Master’s Degree is from University of Central Florida. I’ve been a sixth grade teacher and media specialist in various Florida high schools, elementary and middle schools. I’ve had professional articles published, spoken at conferences and workshops, and won several educational awards and grants, including Florida's Master Teacher Award and was named 2001-2002 Teacher of the Year for Edgewater High School. In 2002, I was named a National Board Certified Teacher. When I’m not at school or at home, I exercise. In the past five years I've competed in running, canoeing and kayaking races. Almost every winter I snow ski at various resorts west of the Mississippi River. I have been a member of the opera, ballet, art museum and foreign film support groups. I also go to the theatre, symphony, movies and bookstores. I have vacationed and visited major art museums throughout the United States and in twenty-three foreign countries.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has proposed zero-interest loans to school districts to help create new high schools of no more than 500 students. These smaller schools are intended to increase student learning by creating a learning environment in which students interact more personally with their teachers. A debate has followed. Return to Media Center mainpage A Growing Epidemic
Summit on obesity among kids will focus on schools by Ridgely Ochs
Staff Writer, Newsday.com The rhetoric is the kind that has until recently been reserved for children from disaster-torn countries or those from AIDS or drug-plagued neighborhoods:
"If we do not do something, the children of this generation will die before their parents," said Dr. Sue Kimm of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
"When you're young, you're most susceptible to habits or addictions. What we're dealing with will have dire consequences on the health and well-being of young Americans," said Dr. Irwin Redlener, president and cofounder of the nonprofit Children's Health Fund in New York.
What these experts are describing is not cocaine addiction or the spread of HIV, but the swelling in the numbers of children who are overweight or obese. The rate of such young Americans has increased threefold in the past quarter century, rising twice as fast among minorities as among whites, according to recent government statistics. Today 13 percent to 14 percent of Americans 19 and under are overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Children are considered overweight if they're in the top 5 percent of body mass index, a standard of body weight compared to height.
Alarmed by the increase - as well as by the increase in diabetes and early heart disease among young people - authorities who play a role in kids' lives are convening tomorrow in Washington, D.C., at the Healthy Schools Summit. Former Surgeon General David Satcher will preside, with first lady Laura Bush as honorary chairwoman, as researchers, government officials, doctors, nutritionists, school administrators and teachers focus on what schools can do to turn the tide of the epidemic.

New Media Faculty Events Classes Jobs ... Multimedia Tutorials L ocated in the San Francisco Bay Area at the heart of the new media publishing revolution, the school has one of the most extensive online journalism curriculums in the country. Students learn how to write for this new interactive medium, integrate video, audio, text and graphics into a story, and design multimedia Web sites. Classes also explore the many challenges the Internet poses for professional and ethical standards in journalism. New media course offerings include Introductory Multimedia Reporting and Advanced Multimedia Reporting, Computer Assisted Reporting and several courses that use Weblogs to cover news events. We also offer independent study courses for more advanced work in online publishing. To keep up with the latest concepts in online publishing, the program draws heavily on the experience of people working at new media companies in the area. Recent lecturers and teaching fellows at the school have come from online publications such as MarketWatch, Macworld, ZDNet, Wired News, Salon, PC World Online, and the online editions of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the Reuters news service. Through these courses and at internships at local new media companies, our students have direct contact with the industry leaders who are shaping the future of this new communications medium.
