29. Electronic School: Media Central
Most facility plans make the new breed of school library/media centers the homeof their television studio, multimedia production lab, student/staff
http://www.electronic-school.com/199903/0399f3.html
Knowing the components of media centers, including media-production areas, is key to understanding what media centers can become. Media centers have always been people places. Making those spaces as congenial as possible while remaining flexible remains of utmost importance. Planning for flexibility mandates that media centers have as few internal walls as possible. The corresponding lighting pattern must be just as flexible. Libraries traditionally require two types of lighting: general and task specific. While this remains true, the infusion of technologies into media centers creates new circumstances and rules for lighting needs. As an example, a diagonal pattern for ceiling lighting offers flexibility by allowing for good illumination no matter how the library stacks are arranged or rearranged or even if they no longer function as stack areas. Running the lighting down the stack aisles definitely would limit future design options. Similarly, placing diagonal ceiling-lighting installations on separate controls also helps with creating special lighting areas. Making use of natural daylight in reading areas is a longtime tradition of library/media center design, and deservedly so. Yet also consider that while relying in part on natural light for daytime reading and activities works well, additional lighting will be needed if the media center is open for nighttime activities. Even if the facility does not have regular evening hours, more than likely there will be after-work parent open houses and meetings of outside groups there in the evening.

SELECTION CRITERIA FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER COLLECTIONS
The Baltimore County Public School policy states that each office in the Department of Instruction shall establish a Materials Review and Selection Committee to determine criteria for selecting materials to ensure that all instructional materials extend the knowledge and understanding of the Essential Curriculum. The following policy was developed by the Office of Library and Information Technology.
School library media specialists are responsible for the review, evaluation, and selection of the school library media collection. They are guided by the system-level selection policy that embodies the philosophy and procedures set forth in national, state, and county documents. Library media specialists work cooperatively with administrators and teachers to provide resources which represent diverse points of view, stimulate growth in thinking skills, and promote the overall educational program. Library media collections are developed to meet both curricular and personal needs. To ensure that these needs are met, library media specialists apply selection criteria and use recommended selection tools. All purchases, including gifts, should meet the same selection standards.
This selection policy reflects the philosophy and goals of the school system and supports the principles of intellectual freedom described in Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs the

Not only is it a very enjoyable and relaxing way to pass the time, but it is also a painless way to improve your speaking and writing skills. In fact, New York State Commissioner of Education Richard Mills recommends that students read at least 25 books per year of increasingly sophisticated content and literary quality. This may sound like an overwhelming goal, particularly if you currently think of yourself as a non-reader. The trick is to find an interesting book and make some time each day for reading. Before you know it, it will have become a habit - a good one! The Marlboro High School Media Center encourages student leisure reading in many ways.
