The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) advocates national policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. NANA promotes within the legislative and executive branches of government a better understanding of the importance of healthy eating, physical activity, and obesity control to the nation's health and health-care costs. One of the primary goals of NANA is to cultivate champions for nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention in Congress and federal agencies. Efforts include supporting effective education programs, advocating adequate funding for programs, and promoting environmental changes that help Americans eat better and be more active. NANA is made up of more than 300 organizations. NANA's policy priorities include:

Cornell Cooperative Extension Week and National 4-H Week Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts Our hearts and minds are with the people who live in the Gulf Coast States who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. This catastrophic event has already been described as the worst natural disaster in our nation's history. People across the country are asking what they can do to help in this time of need. While the geographic distance between the Empire State and the Gulf Coast is great, all of us can provide direct and appropriate assistance to those so adversely affected. The best and most direct way to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina is through monetary donations. If you wish to contribute to the relief effort, the National Donations Steering Committee has developed information for people interested in supporting disaster relief efforts Cornell Cooperative Extension is part of the national Cooperative Extension System and a member of the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN). EDEN is a collaboration of land grant university extension professionals who use educational tools to reduce the impact of disasters and emergencies. The network's role is to link extension educators from across the United States so they can share resources to reduce the impact of disasters while making the information locally specific. Nutritional Health of Elderly New Yorkers
    Elderly Nutrition Program and Services
The New York State Office for the Aging administers the Nutrition Program for the Elderly (NPE) under Title III-C of the Older Americans Act and the state funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The NPE provides a mid-day meal, 5 or more days per week, to older persons (age 60+) at congregate nutrition sites or delivered to their homes. Other NPE services include nutrition education, nutrition counseling, shopping assistance and transportation.
Besides a nutritious meal, congregate nutrition sites provide social interaction and access to other services including health screening, financial counseling, nutrition and health education, and recreational activities.
Home delivered meals (HDMs) are appropriate for those individuals assessed as homebound, unable to prepare meals, and lacking other support for meals. One or two meals five or more days a week may be indicated when other support is not available. HDMs are a vital component of in-home supportive services designed to delay or prevent inappropriate institutional care.
Nutrition education programs are presented to congregate nutrition participants, and nutrition education information is provided to HDM participants. The goal of nutrition education activities is to improve eating habits by aiding participants to make informed food purchasing choices and to develop positive attitudes towards good nutrition.

National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity Child Nutrition Program Reauthorization Recommendations Over the last two decades, rates of obesity have doubled in children and tripled in adolescents. Poor diet (too much saturated fat, sodium and calories, not enough fruits, vegetables and whole grains, etc.) and physical inactivity are major contributors to heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, which are responsible for 60% of deaths in the United States. Strengthen Nutrition Education/Promotion in Child Nutrition Programs Good nutrition should begin in childhood when eating habits are formed and chronic diseases begin to develop. Promoting and teaching healthy eating should be an integral component of the child nutrition programs.
    • Enhance and strengthen the Team Nutrition program by adding a state-level infrastructure and networking component called the "Team Nutrition Network." Fund by increasing the State Administrative Expense formula from 1.5% to 2% and dedicating the 0.5% increase to nutrition education (to provide $40 million annually). Maintain the current level of funding ($10 million per year) for existing Team Nutrition program components and give the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) more flexibility to spend those resources.

Governor George E. Pataki was joined today by National Hockey League (NHL) star, and Utica native, Rob Esche at the Slingerlands Elementary School in Delmar to launch New York's Activ8Kids! program. Activ8Kids! is a part of a $9.6 million initiative to fight childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles among children. The Governor first announced the new program in January as part of his eleventh annual State of the State address.
Click here for large scale picture "Activ8Kids! is a comprehensive approach to fighting the epidemic of childhood obesity that will serve as a model for the rest of the nation," Governor Pataki said. "By providing new resources and focusing existing programs into a comprehensive initiative, we can give New York's children and their parents the core tools they need to lead healthier and happier lives. "We all love having snacks from time to time, but we also recognize the importance of eating healthy foods and exercising regularly. It is also a pleasure to launch the new program with New York's very own Rob Esche who, as a NHL goalie, understands the importance of prevention as a way to protect his team, very much the same way as we all seek to protect our children and families from consuming too many high calorie snacks," the Governor said.
