Introduction Nutrition and Health Home Delivered Meal Programs The Current Study Selected Counties and HDM Services Nutrition and Health Hunger and malnutrition are the most apparent and publicly recognized results of inadequate diets among older New Yorkers. Poor nutrition, however, is a much broader public health issue. Adequate and appropriate diets are an essential component of preventing and fighting many, if not most, illnesses and chronic diseases and conditions, many of which are among the leading causes of death and disability of seniors in the nation. Heart disease, hypertension (i.e., high blood pressure), adult onset diabetes (Type II) and osteoporosis are among those chronic illnesses and conditions associated with nutrition and frequently recognized as high risks when diets are inadequate or not healthy. Recipients of home delivered meals experience basic day-to-day problems in realizing a nutritionally healthy diet. Typically, acute and chronic illnesses and conditions interfere with their physical ability to shop or prepare meals. This may be compounded by insufficient income to buy food or an inadequate understanding of the health effects of poor nutrition.
