It is one of the five boroughs that comprise the City of New York . The borough is coterminous with New York County and includes the Island of Manhattan, as well as several other smaller islands and a small portion of the mainland (see geography). As of , the population comprised 1,537,195 people, but the county is geographically among the smallest in the United States with only 33 square miles of land. History
Midtown Manhattan, Times Square on Broadway The name Manhattan ("hilly island" or possibly "place of intoxication") is from the Algonquian languages of the earliest known inhabitants of the area. Legend has it that the island was purchased from the natives for $24 in beads and other such trinkets. Explorers however, paid the wrong tribe, who were glad to accept money for an island that wasn't even theirs. The first European discovery of Manhattan is generally credited to English explorer

I n collecting cartographic materials relating to the events of 9/11, the Library's Geography and Map Division is concentrating on documenting the role maps played in managing the recovery effort. Traditional surveying and mapping techniques as well as modern electronic and remote sensing technologies were employed to aid the rescue and recovery operations, including remote sensing and aerial imagery, digital orthophotography, cutting-edge laser (light detection and rangingLIDAR) technology with the capability of producing accurate elevation data, and thermal imagery for mapping hot spots in the rubble. T hese mapping initiatives directed at the federal, state, and municipal levelssometimes in association with the private-sectorprovided important geographic and cartographic resources to help officials evaluate damage, monitor the progress of recovery, and provide for the safe deployment of personnel.

During the latter half of the 19th century, geography continued to be included in American schools as a separate subject. It was taught in elementary as well as secondary schools. Illustrations and maps became more detailed and color was added to many books. Content during this period is highly reflective of the times in which they were published, presenting a variety of biases and topics acceptable to the American audience. Atlases and gazetteers, some general (such as the World Atlas) and some specific (such as the Biblical Gazetteer) appear to have developed along with maps and geography textbooks.
    Terra Incognita
The interior of Africa continued to be a mysterious or "dark" place to the Western world until the early 20th century. European colonial powers frequently discouraged geographers with tales of cannibalism, impassable deserts, dense jungles, and ferocious animals. By doing so, they protected their imperialist goals within the continent. In these three maps, all published within 26 years of each other, many of the features of Africa were unknown to American geographers. Note the similarities of the two maps published in the 1870s, but also note the improvements in the map published in Frye's 1896 textbook.

    Olin Library Census Geography
A Guide To Olin Library Map Holdings Before the development of the current census geography (tracts and blocks), the Census Bureau used city voting wards as census divisions. Therefore, in order to use the schedules (name lists) for the censuses between 1790 and 1900 most effectively, it is necessary to know the ward boundaries of major cities. The Library of Congress compiled a Ward Maps of United States : A Selective Checklist of Pre-1900 Maps in the Library of Congress. (MAPS +Z 6028 .U575 W2) The Map Collection has microfiche copies of the 232 maps described in this list (OLIN MICROFICHE 1546). There are also photographic copies of each map available for New York State Albany, Brooklyn, Buffalo, New York City and Rochester. These are located in the catalog under the subject heading: City nameAdministrative and political divisionsMaps For maps of cities and towns not listed in this bibliography, consult Cartographic Records of the Census Bureau (MAPS CD 3026 A32 no. 103)
