Interactive New York City Subway Map
Back to the social studies page This is an interactive map of the New York City subway system. Click on a station to begin your search. When you click on another station, the program will find you the most direct route. By default, the program computes the route you could take at 8 a.m. on a weekday. To select a different time, use the "Route Options" button. Subway schedules are particularly different on weekends, and especially after midnight. The "Route Options" button also lets you choose how often the applet will transfer you between subway lines. The "Select Lines" button lets you choose which subway lines the applet will use for your trip. For instance, if you know the E train is out of service, you can use the "Select Lines" dialog to generate a route that avoids the E train. The map below is a map of the subway routes for all of New York City. There are also other maps available, and a Java 1.1 version if you have a newer browser. Sorry, Java does not seem to be available.

New York 1964 World's Fair
The 1964 New York World's Fair at Flushing Meadow in Queens, New York had a two year run; from April 22 to October 18, 1964 and from April 21 to October 17, 1965 - a total of 360 days. It was held in conjunction with the city of New York's 300th anniversary of British forces under the command of the Duke of York gaining control of the Dutch city of New Amsterdam in 1664.
The 1964-65 World's Fair featured 140 pavilions on 646 acres, the old site of the 1939-40 New York's World Fair. Althought the majority of the pavilions were United States commerical companies, there were also 21 state pavilions and 36 foreign pavilions. It was the dawn of the space age and the fair's theme was "Man in a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe."
The problem was that the fair wasn't sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions because world's fairs are limited to one year runs. Besides the BIE had already given their blessing to Seattle's 1962 fair (only one U.S. fair allowed per decade). Consequently most European countries and the Communist bloc boycotted it. None-the-less countries mainly in Asia, South America, the Mid-East and Africa were represented.
But it was U.S. industry, led by General Electric, Ford, General Motors, Crysler, I.B.M., Bell Telephone, U.S. Steel, Pepsi Cola, Dupont, RCA and Westinghouse that spent lavishly, erected handsome pavilions and stuffed them with entertainment that they hoped would boost their image with consumers. In all more than a billion dollars was invested.

Welcome to Map New York! Our Map New York project, a map-based information system developed with ArcIMS, connects communities with helpful information using data from the census as well as state and federal agency reports. Our project provides city, town and tract level information and, in a separate mapping page, county level data as well. Map NY is part of the American Communities Project at Brown University, led by Dr. John Logan. Preliminary work was completed during 2002-2004 when Dr. Logan was Director of the Lewis Mumford Center at the
University at Albany. A mirror of the system is being maintained at the Mumford Center and can be accessed at http://www.albany.edu/mumford/mapny

New York City Subway Map
Sorry, but your browser does not seem to support Java. This means that you cannot run this applet. The buttons above create a window that displays a map of the New York City subway system. Using the mouse, click on one subway station, then another. (The map is big, so use the scroll bars to get around.) When you successfully select two stations, the program will calculate the fastest route between those stations. If you don't change anything, the program assumes you're making your trip at 8 a.m. on a weekday. To change this setting, click on the "Route Options" button, which you'll see at the top of the subway map window. You can also use the "Select Lines" button to choose which subway lines are used by the program. This is useful if you don't like the route that the program calculated, or if you know that something is wrong with that line today and you'd like to find an alternate route. Last update: June 8, 2004. Put the Manhattan Bridge back in service. Sorry about the long delay. Questions?
