E-Seminar 4, Urban Crisis: Disease, Crime, and Space
Taught by: Kenneth T. Jackson Description
In this fourth in a series of eight e-seminars, Kenneth T. Jackson, Professor of History at Columbia University and President of the New-York Historical Society, describes how enterprising New Yorkers in the nineteenth century solved some of the problems they encountered as so many people settled on the rather small piece of land that is New York City. He examines the importance that these New Yorkers attached to public space and focuses on the creation of Central Park. He discusses the creation of the Metropolitan Board of Health, the implementation of health and sanitary regulations as a response to outbreaks of cholera, and the founding of the New York City Police Department. For more than three decades, Professor Jackson has taught a legendary course on the history of New York City. In this series of e-seminars, he recreates the classroom experience at Columbia. The series includes a wealth of documentary and archival photography, interactive maps, and other illustrative material.

The History of the City of New York
E-Seminar 6, Ethnic New York
Taught by: Kenneth T. Jackson Description
In Ethnic New York , the sixth e-seminar in an eight-part series, Kenneth T. Jackson traces the development of New York City's ethnic neighborhoods, particularly two of the most famous: Harlem and the Lower East Side. Professor Jackson examines the evolution of housing codes, which set guidelines for the layout of buildings and the provision of amenities and have left their stamp on much of the city's current housing stock. He also follows the movement of ethnic communities from one part of the city to another as neighborhoods once out of their reach were made accessible to them by the rise of public transportation or, in the case of Harlem in the early years of the twentieth century, by an oversupply of speculative housing. For more than three decades, Professor Jackson has taught a course at Columbia on the history of New York City. This series of e-seminars includes a wealth of documentary and archival photography, interactive maps, and other illustrative material.
