Linguistic Geography of Pennsylvania
The above map is historically skewed, in that boundaries follow the most modern studies when possible, but where current information is not available the boundaries must often reflect the 1939 LAMSAS data. At certain points the modern and older studies clearly conflict: Schuylkill County with its consistent monophthongization would have been better classified with the Lehigh Valley and Reading in 1939; today, its acceptance of the low back merger shows that it clearly belongs to the Anthracite region.

New York State History and Geography
And Other School 14 Curriculum Resources Because Troy is located in the Capital Region of New York, teachers at School 14 find it important that the children know and understand the history and geography of the state: we've accommodated their classroom needs with several relevant links. Hiking these Adirondack trails will give you an even broader view of what's out there on the Web, with examples not only for School 14's New York State history and geography curriculum, but for their general science curriculum as well, from ecology to botany to the life cycle of the butterfly. Visit these sites with a discriminating eye, trekkers. Articulate some of the questions that may already be forming in your head: Is this site for students or teachers? Or both? Or neither? How can it be used in the classroom? Is it of no use at all? Could most of the information found at the site be found in the school library? These are tough questions, but you really need to confront them before you bring the Internet in your classroom.

A candid and revelatory critique of academic geography and geographers. Reviews
"A work strongly critical (in various places, bitterly critical) of the work of numerous distinguished American geographers, both living and deceased. The work is reasoned, if not always reasonable, and reveals something of the anatomy of a profession."

GEORGE R. HALKETT MY DEAR HALKETT More years ago than either of us cares to recall, we were both, in the same dismal autumn for us, sent wandering from our native land in Scotland to the ends of the earth. I remember that each commiserated the other because of that doctor's doom in which we both, being young and foolish, believed. Since then we have sailed many seas and traversed many lands, and I, at least, have the wayfaring fever too strong upon me ever to be cured now. At times, however, one not only returns to one's own country, but to the familiar lands of Literary Geography, where, since we were boys, we have so often fared with never-failing gladness and content. Some of these wayfarings, set in the steadfastness of print, are now chronicled in this book; and to whom better could I dedicate it than to you, who are at once editorially its godfather and the old-time and valued friend of THE AUTHOR CONTENTS PART I THE COUNTRY OF STEVENSON THE COUNTRY OF GEORGE MEREDITH AYLWIN-LAND: WALES AND EAST ANGLIA THE COUNTRY OF CARLYLE ... Geography and Map Division
I n collecting cartographic materials relating to the events of 9/11, the Library's Geography and Map Division is concentrating on documenting the role maps played in managing the recovery effort. Traditional surveying and mapping techniques as well as modern electronic and remote sensing technologies were employed to aid the rescue and recovery operations, including remote sensing and aerial imagery, digital orthophotography, cutting-edge laser (light detection and rangingLIDAR) technology with the capability of producing accurate elevation data, and thermal imagery for mapping hot spots in the rubble. T hese mapping initiatives directed at the federal, state, and municipal levelssometimes in association with the private-sectorprovided important geographic and cartographic resources to help officials evaluate damage, monitor the progress of recovery, and provide for the safe deployment of personnel.

97. Distributed (Virtual) Teams: Overcoming Time And Geography?
Section from a management information systems course on virtual teams as taskbased groups that use technology to overcome some of the frictions of time and geography.

Working in Virtual Teams
Overcoming Time and Geography?
Following from the section on Virtual Organisations , this section will look at a different form of vitual group: The Virtual Team. The Encyclopedia from CALT at Insead offers a large selection of material that may be of general interest for this and other sections concerned with different types of virtual group. The concept of the virtual team is not clearly defined and it often overlaps with notions of the networked organization, virtual communities, electronic commerce and teleworking. Viewed in this way, virtual teams are seen as a way of overcoming differences in time and geography through creating a virtual co-presence (sometimes called virtual co-location) through the application of technology, i.e. they exploit reliable and consistent communications in order to work together and overcome some of the 'frictions' of time and geography. In contrast to home based work and telework described earlier, but a greater proportion of the work is carried out 'on-line' as hot distributed collaborative work. When teams are physically co-located, the co-presence required for 'hot' working is not a problem. However, when work becomes temporally or geographically distributed is what is meant by 'presence' can be problematical, as can the mediating effects of the technologies used to achieve this. Virtual Teams are seen as project or task focused groups. Team membership may be relatively stable (e.g. in an established sales team) or change on a regular basis (e.g. in project teams). Members may be drawn from the same organization or from several different organizations, (e.g. when projects involve consultants or external assessors). Further distinctions can be made on physical proximity, (i.e. whether or not the team members are co-located) and by work-cycle synchronicity, (i.e. whether or not the team members are in the same time zones).

New York State Flag
Emblazoned on a dark blue field is the state coat of arms. The goddess Liberty holds a pole with a Liberty Cap on top. Liberty stands for freedom. At her feet is a discarded crown, representing freedom from England at the end of the revolutionary war. On the right is the goddess, Justice. She wears a blindfold and carries the scales of justice. Meaning that everyone receives equal treatment under the law. The state motto "Excelsior" on a white ribbon expresses the idea of reaching upward to higher goals. On the shield a sun rises over the Hudson highlands and ships sail the Hudson river. Above the shield is an eagle resting on a globe representing the Western Hemisphere.
