By Carly Berwick You needn’t mourn the lower-Manhattan art scene, all but gentrified out of existence. Today’s Cedar Taverns are just a subway line (or two) away from the major downtown galleries, in areas where lofts are still cheap and artists have room to make a big, experimental mess. Though the emerging talents of “Greater New York” come from all over the tri-state area, the heat in this intense market is radiating from several concentrations of future stars, located in established art enclaves like Williamsburg and Long Island City as well as new ones like Harlem and outer Brooklyn. Introduction to Medieval History
since May 25, 1998
LE FastCounter

The city of New York is a great creation of modern American culture, but to the eyes of a medievalist the histories of the European, Byzantine, and Islamic Middle Ages are documented in its streets and buildings:
  • In the museums of the city we find a wealth of artistic, manuscript and architectural objects from the middle ages. In New York's buildings we can trace the history of medieval architecture. The ethnic and religious communities which make up the city have preserved, and in some cases developed, religious and cultural tradition which had their roots in medieval societies. The contrast between "medieval" and "modern" cannot be taken as absolute - elements of medieval technology survived until the Industrial Revolution [and later], and can be seen in the Colonial heritage of New York.
After reading through the contents of this site, you will have little doubt about just how deeply, and in how many different ways, the European middle ages permeate New York's life. Far from being a matter of antiquarianism, without some knowledge of the middle ages, it is hardly possible to understand the city and its culture.

Geography - Land of Lakes and Forests Finland is the fifth largest country in the European Union (EU) and is the most northerly state on the mainland of Europe. Approximately 130,500 square miles (338,000 sq. km), Finland is similar in size to the state of Montana. However, it is narrower and longer with 690 miles (1100 km) stretching between its southern and northern tips. Thousands of islands and small cliffs dot the southern and southwestern coast of Finland in the Baltic Sea. Åland, the most recognizable set of islands, is located between Finland and Sweden and boasts more than 6,500 isles and islands. Many important relics of the Stone, Iron and Bronze Ages have been found there. .

NY The Dutch were the first settlers in New York, establishing Fort Orange near Albany in 1624 and New Amsterdam on the island of Manhattan a year later. After the English took over in the 1660s, the colony was renamed New York, after the Duke of York. One of the original 13 states to join the Union (it entered in 1788), New York is known as the "Empire State." The state includes everything from skyscrapers in Manhattan to rivers, mountains, and lakes in upstate New York. Niagara Falls is one of the chief attractions. New York is the l eading center of banking, finance and communication in the United States. Much of the state's greatness lies in exciting New York City, the largest city in the United States and the fourth largest city in the world; its many theaters, museums, and musical organizations make it one of the cultural centers of the Western Hemisphere.

Urban Colossus: Why is New York America's Largest City?
Edward L. Glaeser NBER Working Paper No. 11398
Issued in June 2005
NBER Program(s): EFG Abstract -
New York has been remarkably successful relative to any other large city outside of the sunbelt and it remains the nation's premier metropolis. What accounts for New York's rise and continuing success? The rise of New York in the early nineteenth century is the result of technological changes that moved ocean shipping from a point-to-point system to a hub and spoke system; New York's geography made it the natural hub of this system. Manufacturing then centered in New York because the hub of a transport system is, in many cases, the ideal place to transform raw materials into finished goods. This initial dominance was entrenched by New York's role as the hub for immigration. In the late 20th century, New York's survival is based almost entirely on finance and business services, which are also legacies of the port. In this period, New York's role as a hub still matters, but it is far less important than the edge that density and agglomeration give to the acquisition of knowledge. Linguistic Geography of the Mainland United States
Traditionally, dialectologists have listed three dialect groups in the United States: Northern, Midland, and Southernalthough some scholars prefer a two-way classification of simply Northern and Southern, and one may also find significant difference on the boundaries of each area. The map shown above represents a synthesis of various independent field studies this century. These are in chronological order: the Linguistic Atlas fieldwork begun under the direction of Hans Kurath in the 1930's; the informal but extensive personal observations of Charles Thomas in the 1940's; the DARE fieldwork of the 1960's under Frederic Cassidy; and the Phonological Atlas fieldwork of William Labov during the 1990's.
Although it may seem that a great amount of data has been collected over a short time span, the shifts in American dialects this century have been rapid enough to outpace the data collection. What appears to be a well-entrenched dialect marker today such as the Northern Cities Shift, may barely appear in earlier studiesaffecting both classification and mapping. Nevertheless, some basic observations on current American linguistic geography can be made.
